She types like shes playing a piano! Its so irritating but I dont know why. Its the most random way of typing Ive ever seen.

I thought it must have been to warn-off evil spirits,🤷‍♀️ not that I’ve ever heard of a potato being used for this before.

I knew an elderly lady who kept an onion on her fireplace to absorb bad energy and intentions from visitors! Never tried it myself though! 😜

MsTrish · 02/07/2026 17:44

I apparently type as though I’m operating a manual typewriter. Quite loud, but my fingers seem to be extremely powerful.

I still have flashbacks to a colleague at a former workplace who SHOUTED SO LOUDLY ON THE PHONE PEOPLE RIGHT AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MASSIVE OPEN PLAN OFFICE USED TO LOOK UP AND GO Hmm.

Shudder.

Did they not understand the basics of how a telephone works - or were they more familiar with the old non-amplified two-yoghurt-pots-on-a-long-string variety?!

If you're that irritated, may I suggest that you're actually stressed about something else? How your colleague is sitting and typing shouldn't affect you. You're triggering yourself here and having all the stress responses that are making you feel worse.

I completely disagree. I have worked with colleagues who attack the keyboard as though it has to be knocked into submission. It might be a coincidence but they’re also the type of people who pride themselves on being ultra efficient. It’s bizarre, distracting and wearying.

Having said that, some keyboards do seem to make a lot of noise.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 02/07/2026 17:53

What level is she, Chopsticks or Opus Clavicembalisticum?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 02/07/2026 17:54

Get.
Some.
Headphones.

Bondsolon · 02/07/2026 17:55

I have a colleague who requested and was granted an office barrier as his work is top secret. Who know if it is, or isn’t.
A large free standing bookcase was put in. However he talks very loudly and does not use headphones so we can all hear both sides of every conversation!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 02/07/2026 17:56

I used to work with a woman who did all her phone calls on speaker phone. She also talked really loudly. No idea why she thought we wanted to hear all her conversations. I always wished she’d answer the phone from her Drs telling her and the whole office she has crabs or something 🤣

Earphones?

Fitbodyproblem · 02/07/2026 17:58

Another vote for her being a touch typist. A dying art, but pretty efficient. 😀

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/07/2026 17:59

So she’s the “Laptop Liberace”.

ohyesido · 02/07/2026 18:02

I understand. I had a colleague who typed in the most irritating way.

I only noticed it because I didn’t like him though

Ohpleeeease · 02/07/2026 18:04

I touch type. And I learned on proper upright manual typewriters where you needed to keep your wrist level with your fingers and the keys because of the effort needed to depress them. Is that what you mean, OP? It’ll blow your mind but I also learned shorthand.

catslovehairties · 02/07/2026 18:05

Agree it sounds like touch typing (which is what I do) - nobody is taught it now so it probably does look a bit weird.

Siriusmuggle · 02/07/2026 18:08

I work with a one finger basher. Rapid fire and incredibly hard. It’s so loud.

I had a colleague who kept fruit and a potato on her in tray. She’d leave it to rot, throw it away and replace with fresh fruit and a potato! Never ever saw her eat any of it! Such a vicious circle continued for years!

A potato??? Don't go quiet, I need to know more . What sort of potato? Raw? Muddy? Wrapped?

Touch typing is wonderful. Best thing I ever learned.

Beenwhereyouareagain · 02/07/2026 18:14

@ChocolateSqueezyyogurts

So if I understand this correctly, you're having a rant because you don't like the way her typing LOOKS?

Are you SERIOUS??

Please put in a request for a desk change so you can no longer see her. 🙄🙄

InterestedDad37 · 02/07/2026 18:14

Depends how good a pianist she'd be 🤔 🎹 ⌨️
If she's sight-reading Schubert, you could applaud her - if she's biting her lip and torturing "chopsticks", you may have a point.

Surely most of us type whilst looking at the screen, rather than the keyboard? I thought the term arose when typists had a document to type that the looked at whilst typing and didn’t look at the keys- no screen in those days. Or they listened to a dictated tape and looked at the document they were typing. Even my two finger typing colleagues don’t look at the keyboard

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 02/07/2026 18:22

Does she turn & give a big smile to her audience - like Liberace (giving my age away).

I did suggest this but apparently there was nowhere else for her to sit!

I once had a colleague who did this.

Another colleague would sometimes comment 'were you phoning Australia? 🤣

Its really hard to describe too, but its almost like her wrists are slightly raised and her fingers tap the keys very gently and dramatically. If you saw it you'd understand 🤣

Dies she also use the imaginary pedals?

Or try to do chords?

I can't imagine what this looks like!
