To block GBNews from my parent’s TV?

1000 replies

goslowly · 02/07/2026 09:03

My parents retired 4 years ago. They’re both in their 60s, healthy, happy, comfortable financially.

Since they’ve retired they have been sucked in by every single thing they say on there. They can spend an entire day sat in front of the TV getting angrier and angrier. It’s to the point that if Starmer comes on the TV, they shout about how he should be killed.

it’s genuinely starting to concern me. You can’t have a rational conversation with them about anything. I miss my parents, how they used to be before all the conspiracy and anger took over.

I’m genuinely tempted to block it from their tv using parental controls and just pretending it’s some weird fault in their telly. They’d not be able to fix it.

Nope the issue I see is your wanting to control other adults.

Its a common theme on mn. Parents moan, parents are boring, parents don't agree with politics parents are phobic. The next gen seems to be a bunch of whining, controlling intolerants.

We'll all be be bumped into care homes with no access to the remote control at this rate.

Please show me where I’ve said I want to dictate everything in their lives? I’ve identified the issue, I want to solve it because they’re genuinely horrible people at the moment

I take it you’ve not actually read what I’ve said then?

What was the point of this reply? I’ve not seen a single instance of you taking suggestions on board — you just seem to want to argue with everyone who doesn’t agree with you.

Many people have responded and have experience of this effect, but you will never make your parents think like you. What you can try to do is get them out of the loop where they are getting cross about this stuff all the time, and not having arguments about it. You won’t “solve it” your way. Their views are their views and the more you wind them up they’ll double down. As seems to be happening here as well

Araminta1003 · 02/07/2026 14:56

If your mum is pro life can you get here to start going to church? The people in my church who are retired are all really busy with all sorts of activities from book clubs, to food banks, to being magistrates, to travelling to Africa, fund raising - they have an annual “rock” concert where they perform (!) to raise cash etc etc - none of them are hateful at all, mainly busy with active social lives. Maybe your parents are still adjusting to retirement. If for example, they feel the white working class has been left behind, they could go volunteer in a school and do reading etc with the kids. Small primary kids are really cute.

Yes it's so unpleasant. I mean seriously, apparently parents 'want their dc shot' for their views and we're banning the telly Confused.

Do you HONESTLY think that they want to kill their own daughter? Or, as I mentioned before and OP hasn’t addressed, they’re being HYPERBOLIC ie exaggerating for effect?

LuckyHazelFox · 02/07/2026 15:18

GREAT segment on the poor girl being raped and her rapists getting lenient sentences. All covered by GB News. As they did and still do with the Grooming gang scandal. LOVE this news channel. 🙌

Yep

5MinuteArgument · 02/07/2026 14:34

Yes, that's my experience too. I think you would only think GB News was beyond the pale if you were well insulated from the pressures being placed on our society.

If I was the OP I would be looking at ways to get them away from the telly rather than policing what they watch.

GB News is well beyond the pale. For a start, it isn't a news channel.🤷‍♀️. It broadcasts a combination of Tru-Fax, hatred and outright lies.

Insulated, my arse.🙄 I may be poor and my area, rough as fuck, but I'm not stupid.

italianlondongirl · 02/07/2026 15:21

Yep you think they actually want their daughter dead??

No I was agreeing with the exaggeration and hyperbolic accusations.

LuckyHazelFox · 02/07/2026 15:24

Sorry @italianlondongirl I wasn't clear

italianlondongirl · 02/07/2026 15:25

Which papers do you prefer? For the 'hopeful' stories?

I read The Mill generally and sometimes the FT (which isnt particularly cheerful)

In what world is it okay to even be hyperbolic and say to your child’s face you think they should be shot for having slightly more left leaning views?!

I'm not insulated from anything but can see that all they want to do is point hatred in the wrong direction. Away from their millionaire owners.

They are currently calling rapists monsters and addressing the Immigration Act. They are also giving coverage to the two 15 year old rapists, whose sentences are being reviewed due to the impact on their victim. Such a shame that makes many of you feel uncomfortable.

Oh please, you can't compare the BBC with GB news! I'm no fan of the BBC but at least they are classed as news and are "regulated".

They were literally created for propaganda. Do your homework.

goslowly · 02/07/2026 15:37

Oh, you don't think the Immigration Act should be amended so rapists can be deported? You don't think a 4 year sentence for rape is lenient? The mask keeps slipping.

You've literally said you want to block their TV as if you are their caretakers, sovereign or boss. It seems to me like you need a hobby. You can't go around trying to restrict the freedoms of others because you don't like how they express themselves. If the opinions and expressions of a couple of pensioners upset you so much, you might want to consider some emotional regulation techniques for yourself i.e. not going around as much or finding a hobby etc as others have kindly suggested. It's not healthy to get this worked up and then seeking validation from strangers.

The radicalisation of boomers is a real documented thing.

You'd block your kids from seeing content that harms their mental health and leads them to being full of hate. I see no reason why the same shouldn't apply to your parents.

Except of course you can't.

But I sympathise hugely. It's a massive problem.

Oooh and where is this "documented" radicalisation?
My dp is a boommer and there has been no radicalisation in my home. He's just a free thinking adult who makes up his own mind.

What outright lies has GB news broadcast?
