Bums hanging out of the bottom of teeny tiny shorts

Don’t know if this really AIBU or a question!
AIBU to think that shorts have become way too short ?
I have seen a LOT of girls in shorts today - with their bum cheeks hanging out the bottom ! Personally I wouldn’t let my daughter out like that. And I wouldn’t were them myself (I would give everyone nightmares !).
so what’s the consensus on bums hanging out of shorts ?

That tube seat fabric looks itchy

I am 58. If I had a bum that looked good hanging out of teeny tiny shorts I would do it. Sadly if I did people would think I had a growth on the back of my knees.

If they have it let them flaunt it. Why, as women, do we feel it is okay to criticise other women!

For the same reason that we feel it's ok to criticise what men wear, or don't wear....

According to one PP upthread apparently the reason women dress like this is : men : so we're not really criticising women at all.

Of course they want attention! So what? They’re young and having fun!

I feel like MN is full of people who were born 44 years of age, wearing sensible knickers and going to bed at 9pm.

Have a day off!

I don’t think that’s representative of 44 yr olds!

Wetblanket78 · 28/06/2026 22:46

As long as they’re not flesh coloured scrunch bum shorts and got the figure for them I’m not bothered. I wouldn’t wear them myself but hey we were all young once. It’s just the fashion did you never wear hot pants? I did.

Triskellion75 · 28/06/2026 22:33

I'm not a massive fan of arse cheeks on display but I did see the most gorgeous young woman in sporty shorts (not micro shorts) the other day. That figure was proof of God's existence I can tell you.

FFS.
What if she hadn't been young?

Shoopshawady · 28/06/2026 22:47

Hmm I own a pair but only wear them on the beach or around the house/garden as they feel a bit wrong! Today at a local park with rivers, waterfalls and swans etc there was a girl who must have been about 13-14 in a thong bikini paddling. It felt so wrong!

Pinkgin00 · 28/06/2026 22:50

It's never a good look, even for someone with an incredible body, it just looks trashy. Short is fine, but no need for arse cheeks hanging out

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/06/2026 22:51

Peony1985 · 28/06/2026 22:43

Boundaries? That's surely gymnasts wearing bodysuits not ultra high cut leotards or women wearing trousers and flats. Not having both cheeks on show whilst walking up the escalator

Pushing boundaries for the male gaze is a bit tragic in the big 2 6.

Young people have always pushed back against their parents, its human nature. Its how fashion has changed.

But for the current generation, there isnt much the generations before havent already done (especially GenX of which I count myself a proud member!) so they either have to dial it right back in a Saffy kind of way or go even more extreme.

Their parents are old and stupid and they need to prove that they are not like their parents so they go to extremes. They will learn, like we all did, that comfy is best!

So you would let your child out of the house with their bum cheeks on display ?

And then they get attention. This is attention

Or they get what they might call 'unwanted attention'. And then theres claim that 'well I didnt want attention'

FrootyCider · 28/06/2026 22:52

It's only a bum. Everyone's got one.
I saw a man in a puffa jacket on Thursday, out in 36 degrees. THAT was disturbing.

aquashiv · 28/06/2026 22:52

I see girls with huge back sides on display i admire their cheeks actually lol

I wear quite short shorts, I couldn't care less what people think.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 28/06/2026 22:52

Yes they have. I wonder where it will end, somewhere around the belly button.
I imagine the parents from the 1960’s were shocked too when the mini exploded.
I just don’t see the point in having your bottom on display. I hate seen children in skimpy shorts.

KeepPumping · 28/06/2026 22:53

SunnySunnyDayz · 28/06/2026 20:46

Agree entirely, it is fashion but I sometimes think fashion has been infiltrated by the manosphere.

Women should be able to wear what they want but WHY do they want to dress like this?

Desperation/need for attention, but if everyone else is doing it it gets harder to stand out so the clothing gets less and less until it just becomes ridiculous and people are laughing at you and making threads online about the sad case they saw on the high street.

God this is such a stupid thing to say.

Its so so tiresome that people have read this trite response, then repeat it as though its some of clever gotcha. When, in fact it is just a bit thick.

We have eyes, we are constantly assessing our surroundings. You will see arse cheeks whether you like it or not. You may avert your gaze once the bare arse has come into your field of vision. But you cannot walk around or drive around with your eyes shut.

Are there just a lot of bots about or do real people actually not understand how eyes work?

Daft.

I hope you read this @PancakeCloud

Hard agree. There were a few girls in our town centre yesterday with those shorts on. How can anyone think they look attractive?

Are you usually attracted to women?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 28/06/2026 22:56

Tbf I wore some skimpy outfits in my time. I was a teenager when Britney and Christina wore bra tops and low cut jeans. I obviously copied the trend on occasion as much as my parents hated it.

Supersimkin7 · 28/06/2026 22:56

Round here it’s all the size 16s at it, looks majestic rather than porny.

LadyWhistledownsSocietyPapers · 28/06/2026 22:56

DancingLions · 28/06/2026 22:01

The thing is though, if this was fat hairy builder Dave with his butt cheeks on display you can bet everyone would be calling it grim and saying he should cover up. I really dont think people would be defending his right to wear what he wants!

A lot of places have rules around men being topless in the summer months. Its not allowed in many places. But there's nothing "private" about mens chests so why do we need that rule? Because people find it gross!

Oh but if its young attractive women its ok? Well yes, no men are going to complain about it are they!

I have to agree, people only are fine with others showing off their bum cheeks if they are attracted to them.

Which is where my issue comes from. I've seen girls as young as 12 wearing them. Their choice of clothing doesn't make perverted men, but it certainly attracts them.

And no, I'm not blaming girls for what they wear, it's never their fault. Looking at it through a realistic lens means there will likely be some men staring, and I would not want that to happen to my 12 year old!

Overall people can wear what they like (although I'd prefer not to see peoples bits) but I do worry about the trend for younger girls.

WTF has that to do with anything?

Why did you even ask that?

PhaedraTwo · 28/06/2026 22:58

Simbaonedaythiswillallbeyours · 28/06/2026 21:11

I think men walking around high streets/supermarkets/public transport etc with no top on is actually worse than butt cheeks.

Agreed. Much worse. There's an unpleasant aggressiveness about it.

Female arses, I just think "sooner you than me love"

ThatCyanCat · 28/06/2026 22:58

LittleWaterRabbit · 28/06/2026 22:42

It’s definitely for attention, you don’t walk around with your arse hanging out if you don’t want attention

But I think that generally, the idea is more "look how edgy and daring and fashionable I am" rather than "I want to titillate you and turn you on".

Yes - yes, you’re right. And if a girl wears red lipstick she was asking for it.

Jesus, it’s like feminism never happened.

Me too. Most of us probably did. Which is why I never cared about scrunch bum leggings or trousers with Juicy written on the arse (cannot believe those ugly fuckers are still going), stupid as they all were.

Actual naked arses out in shopping centres, restaurants and parks in cities and urban areas miles away from any body of water does feel different though.
