Do you like a lot of stuff in your house?

I don't like clutter, it makes me tetchy and feel stressed. We do have book cases and ornaments but they are more thoughtful than just any old item. I do not have stuff on window ledges because then it needs moved to open/close blinds and I can't stand the faff. We have put at hand the stuff we need and what's used regularly, in the kitchen the kettle and toaster are out all the time as are the fruit bowls and chopping boards along with the bread bin, sounds a lot but it's quite a big space so looks spacious. What do you have out!

We do have some cushions on the sofa, a throw blanket and plants dotted about the house but the bedrooms for example have lamps and a basket out with a few photos in frames. All toiletries are in baskets/drawers or cupboards. Am I unusual?

No.

Ibi · 28/06/2026 15:17

Sounds absolutely the opposite of unusual. It’s like everyone’s house I’ve visited. Apart from one person who lived in a chic modern apartment and it was very minimalist, suited the aesthetic of their property though.

stargirl27 · 28/06/2026 15:17

No I don’t like having clutter everywhere.

LifeBeginsToday · 28/06/2026 15:19

It's an about turn from our parents and grandparents who were hoarders following rationing. And also reflective that homes have less space per person now too.

Itiswhysofew · 28/06/2026 15:23

Why would you think you're unusual? Sounds like you've got a pretty normal amount of things on display.

I don't like clutter, but I've got the things that I like to see on display. Like you, I don't display anything on widow ledges, but I've got mostly window seats.

One of my living rooms is similar to this.
No, it's not mine.

AbsoluteHoot · 28/06/2026 15:30

I loathe clutter. Detest it.

Our study is the only room that has lots of ‘stuff’ in it - floor to ceiling bookcases for one.

Our sitting room has plants, lamps, pictures, candles, a couple of trendy ornaments but nothing that’s not aesthetically pleasing! Our kitchen is the same - nothing on worktops other than the fancy coffee machine, and at the moment, a bowl of limes and a vase of sweet peas. No canisters, toaster, kettle, utensils, washing up
liquid, hand wash, bins - everything is in cupboards or the larder pantry. The utility room however, is full of (organised) crap, but nobody goes in there.

No clutter in any bathrooms or bedrooms either.

bridgetreilly · 28/06/2026 15:31

I like stuff. Which is good because my house is tiny, so you couldn’t hide it all away even if you wanted to.

managingexpectations · 28/06/2026 15:52

No. I hate stuff and clutter. It just attracts dust!
unlike clean surfaces and don’t have a lot of ornaments or things without purpose around the home.
in the kitchen I only have the air fryer and kettle out. I got rid of the toaster because it was just too much clutter!
I have one candle warmer in the livingroom and one ornament on the window sill
bedrooms I have a couple of pictures on the walls and a reed diffuser and that’s it. I really like minimal look

FeliciaFancybottom · 28/06/2026 15:55

I like stuff, but I don't like clutter! Everything in my house has a place or a purpose. I have collections of things but they're kept small and displayed nicely.
I don't like bottles, etc., on display in the bathroom or kitchen; things have to be tidied away.

TheIdlerReturns · 28/06/2026 15:59

I like minimalism. DH is more of a hoarder. Don't mind the odd cushion / throw and like seeing books on display - but love clean lines, white walls, lots of space between everything although space is at a premium. Just finished reading The Year of Less by Cait Flanders. Think she got her wardrobe down to 29 items. I've donated about a third of wardrobe to charity. Didn't have much to start with and can probably get it down more. Also enjoyed Swedish Death Cleaning programme on TV. I'll aim to ditch the lot mostly before I pop off.

6ate9 · 28/06/2026 16:02

No, I’m quite minimalist.

Meadowfinch · 28/06/2026 16:02

You have almost the same as me, OP. Things that are used regularly are out on worktop all the time, but I have plenty of worktop space.
The only difference is I only have plants in the bathroom. I forget to water any others.

I’ve read about Swedish Death Cleaning and it really resonated with me!!

Dear ordinary person,

Your home sounds ordinary and not unusual. You have stuff out and stuff away. Like many other people.

Regards,
Another ordinary person.

You get the kettle out every time you need to use it?

Bit morbid but strangely watchable. And I like the idea that you try and put your house in order so that those you leave behind aren't overwhelmed by the remains of your life and having to sort them out at a difficult time.

That’s what I like too. It just made sense to me, especially after seeing my dad having to sort out my grandmother’s house after she died. She had kept so much stuff!!!

No. We have a boiling water tap.

DramaAlpaca · 28/06/2026 17:13

I love my clutter, especially my random piles of books and the pretty pottery I collect, and my wooden ducks... it wouldn't be home without it. I don't much like the dust, though.

Gowlett · 28/06/2026 17:17

I think having a utility room to keep (organised) crap in is helpful on this front.

We have no storage really, apart from wardrobes & one other big cupboard.

It means we have to keep less stuff, which we haven’t quite managed… Yet!

Monty36 · 28/06/2026 17:37

I think you can have an in between. A completely sterile and clear space is not for me. Too cold. But neither is a house full of bits where nobody throws anything away.

mydogisthebest · 28/06/2026 17:37

You would hate my house. I have around 150 plants, about 1,000 books, lots of cd's. I collect perfume bottles and jugs/vases. I have lots of china. I have lots of old clocks.

Every one of our windowsills has things all along it - plants, ornaments, vase/jug, candle.

It does bother me a bit that when me and DH die someone will have to sort our house out. We have no children so not sure who will do it

WallaceinAnderland · 28/06/2026 17:51

You need to do it yourself or it will all go in a skip. Such a lot of landfill.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 28/06/2026 17:56

I have teens and their bedrooms look like we’ve just been burgled- definitely no elegant minimalism in there. The rest of the house is kind of in the middle I guess. My mum has a lot of stuff ( collects pottery, prints and sculpture)but she’s labelled it all for me- colour coded for charity shop, vinterior/ auction with a reserve price 😂😂

No, I don't like clutter either, but I do like things that invoke joy that I've collected from wherever.
