Do you like a lot of stuff in your house?

I don't like clutter, it makes me tetchy and feel stressed. We do have book cases and ornaments but they are more thoughtful than just any old item. I do not have stuff on window ledges because then it needs moved to open/close blinds and I can't stand the faff. We have put at hand the stuff we need and what's used regularly, in the kitchen the kettle and toaster are out all the time as are the fruit bowls and chopping boards along with the bread bin, sounds a lot but it's quite a big space so looks spacious. What do you have out!

We do have some cushions on the sofa, a throw blanket and plants dotted about the house but the bedrooms for example have lamps and a basket out with a few photos in frames. All toiletries are in baskets/drawers or cupboards. Am I unusual?

It does bother me a bit that when me and DH die someone will have to sort our house out. We have no children so not sure who will do it

You need to do it yourself or it will all go in a skip. Such a lot of landfill.

I tend to agree but am not getting rid of things that me and DH have bought or rescued over the years because we like them.

Even if we took things to a charity shop if they can't sell them they will send to landfill

I like things but they have a home mostly little things on my desk in my office (spare room).
It’s just 4 littler things sitting on my monitor stand and then a couple of pictures my niece drew me on my wall, a magnet that sticks to my lamp and there’s something else in there that I can’t remember!
The rest of my house is fairly minimalist, as much as it can be as a family of 5 (often 7 of us here). The only thing on the kitchen sides is a kettle which I’d gladly do away with because I don’t drink hot drinks and then sometimes a vase of flowers.
Front room has shelves, there are books and a couple of things from the kids framed on there.
Blankets are folded over the backs of sofas.
i don’t really like an excess of busy-ness. Just looks like mess to me.

frozendaisy · 28/06/2026 18:17

Personally that’s too sterile for us but it seems more usual nowadays.

Why would you think you're unusual? Sounds like you've got a pretty normal amount of things on display.

I don't like clutter, but I've got the things that I like to see on display. Like you, I don't display anything on widow ledges, but I've got mostly window seats.

One of my living rooms is similar to this.
No, it's not mine.

That room is full of clutter!

mydogisthebest · 28/06/2026 18:30

I don't like the minimalist look at all. Also, to me, a house without plants just looks bare and weird

That room is full of clutter!

I thought the same! So many plants (many of which look fake?!) and too many logs, an excess of cushions. I know for some that it looks cosy but to me it’s not relaxing because there’s just too much stuff crammed into a small place.
We’re all different though, we like what we like and that’s great really isn’t it?

CoastalCalm · 28/06/2026 18:39

Our clutter has reduced after last house move as donated a lot . Now I tend to go for quality and not quantity of things but I think if left unchecked my husband would have a house full of stuff

There's 4 tables covered in crap, logs all over the floor, stuff on top of the wood burner, and 4 cushions plus a blanket on one of the chairs. Does look cosy but would stress me out.

I hate clutter. But I live with 3 people who hate to throw things away.

All the charity shops near me absolutely LOVE Bric a Brac and say that's what sells best so prob wont go to landfill. I think some charities will agree to house clear in return for a small bequest so might be worth looking into that

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 28/06/2026 19:32

Sadly we have a lot of unintended clutter. I never seem to quite keep up with piles of clean washing, the kitchen often has piles of clean/dirty washing. I try to keep on top of it but it's a losing battle with DH with chronic illness and two SEN DC who could be better at tidying up after themselves.

ClematisBirdbath · 28/06/2026 19:37

I hate clutter, hate dusting, and I hate stuff. Hate having things on the windowsills. Having said that, I have a normal amount of books on bookshelves, kettle on the worktops, a few houseplants, just enough furniture, normal amount of clothes, and a filing cabinet in the study with requisite paperwork, etc. that people need.

I have these things because I am the opposite of a hoarder. I have 'obsessive, compulsive spartanism' as I once read it described as. I'm exaggerating a bit, but my problem is that I have trouble holding onto things. When I'm feeling stressed, I will walk around the house looking for things to get rid of. This has got me in some trouble in the past, and I've let go of things I really should have kept. I grew up in a house with hoarders, so I assume this is my reaction to that.

I work very hard to keep a reasonable amount of stuff. Most of which I hate having. If I could have one change of clothes, one set of dishes, one chair, etc, I would. (yes I live on my own)

BeaAndBen · 28/06/2026 19:39

I wish I had a more minimalistic house. Unfortunately we have a fuck-tonne (technical term) of stuff in a 1930s semi with three adult children.

Our bedroom is basically an earthquake in a library. 4 double stacked book cases and teetering vertical piles on every surface, including the floor. Plus a sewing machine with a mending pile.

The rest of the house is a fight between kitchen equipment, art, yarn and fabric, Warhammer armies in crates, painting supplies, board games, video games and consoles, aquaria and vivarium, and framed photos.

And more bookshelves. So, do many bookshelves.

BeaAndBen · 28/06/2026 19:42

Oh and 35 house plants. Only one of which I bought.

Apparently, wh n your friends and relatives know you are a keen (outside only) gardener they buy you a houseplant as a default gift. The bastards.

readingmakesmehappy · 28/06/2026 19:42

We have way too much stuff, but when small children have toys it’s inevitable that some of them aren’t where you would ideally like them to be kept. My house is a mess most days but I simply don’t have the energy to keep nagging everyone to tidy up after themselves, and I am not their skivvy to do it for them. So I have had to learn to tolerate it. One day though, it will be the way I want.

henlake7 · 28/06/2026 19:45

I don't like clutter and I'm informed by visitors my house does look a bit minimal (although a lot of my friends and family are clutteraholic so not sure about their opinions!).
I have few ornaments and cushions but I like things tidy. Also I always prefer lots of floor space as opposed to furniture so my rooms are somewhat bare.
My one exception is plants.....I have tons, they aren't clutter though....they are low maintenance pets!

My best friend has what id call a cluttered house. Books, magazines, throws and cushions on every surface. Loads of ornaments and cat furniture/toys everywhere. Also so much furniture that it feels like you have walkways around each room (kinda like the before stage in a hoarder home but it never gets any worse! LOL).

concertinacornflake · 28/06/2026 19:52

I don't much like minimalist homes, but I don't think we have 'clutter' either. Just the things we regularly use are on open shelves etc.

fiestatime1 · 28/06/2026 19:56

The star of my living room is currently a gousto box that the cat has adopted so.. yeah. I have stuff!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 28/06/2026 19:58

I don't have things on the windowsills, mainly because I have shutters, and would not appreciate moving things every day! Also, my pets would probably knock them off when going to look out of the window.

I am trying to increase the amount of storage in the house, so the stuff that I do have can be properly tidied away. I have a lot of home-based hobbies that all come with lots of accessories and things, so I have a library's worth of books, and all kinds of items related to knitting (both by hand and machine), sewing, art, music and so on!

senua · 28/06/2026 19:59

I suppose I have the opposite problem to the children of hoarders. My parents never had stuff. They weren't minimalist; they just didn't seem to get the house-keeping memo. I was envious of friends who had houses with grown-ups' things like salad spinners and cake forks.

I don't understand the idea of a kitchen that looks like nobody ever cooks in it, a bathroom that looks like nobody bathes in it and a living room that looks like nobody lives in it.

Livingthebestlife · 28/06/2026 20:02

I hate clutter, I hate mess but I have both. My life is currently being taken over by wires, I will die because of wires, I will either trip over or I'll strangle myself with one of the gazillion taking over my house.

That room is full of clutter!

I thought that! No spare space anywhere! Why have a coffee table you can’t actually use?!

WarriorN · 29/06/2026 05:22

rapid3874greekyoghurt · 28/06/2026 16:05

You get the kettle out every time you need to use it?

I know an architect who designed his kitchen like this; everything can go away

It really isn’t! There are things around, but nothing that isn’t intentionally there. It’s stuff, but not clutter.

SilverPink · 28/06/2026 20:23

Huh? The tables are (a) being used and (b) have plenty of space for a cup of coffee. They are not piled high with clutter, but have a few intentionally placed items which make the room warm and inviting.
