To be cheesed off with Universal Credit entry fees?

1000 replies

MaturingCheeseball · 28/06/2026 11:43

I know it’s been done before, but…

I thought I’d like to visit Chatsworth House with (teenage) dd. The cost is £33 each PLUS parking at £7.50. So £73.50.

Then I saw the universal credit/pension credit/pip etc price. THREE POUNDS. And free parking! So £6.00 for two adults (age 17+).

I do not have 12 times as much money as someone on these benefits. I doubt many people do. I’m not begrudging the disadvantaged a day out, but come on! The price differential is ludicrous.

When I saw the £73 price I just decided we couldn’t go, and so be it. But upon seeing the potential for a £6 entry, it made me feel mugged off.

What did that poster say? Wondering if it was aimed at me.

It’ll only be deleted if it’s repeated but it wasn’t aimed at you, it was a generic vile comment.

That’s why NT membership is such a good deal. A single parent with three kids pays £9 a month with access to All NT properties in England.

If you join National Trust Scotland, it’s cheaper and gives you access to all properties in England, Wales, Scotland as well as Scotland.

And because they don't work or only work 12 hours a week, they can go when they like.

You are generalising quite a bit. We have to claim UC as my partner is unwell, unable to work and my full time job on top of caring for another 2 ppl, just doesn’t cover the 5 of us! More than half my wages go on childcare.
I’m sure you can understand, that I am tired caring for 2 often 3 others, I still actually do a job and I’m even more tired of hearing these snide comments.
What we claim now was once working tax credits, nobody got a say in the merge. I do believe they were all lumped under the one umbrella precisely so when the numbers of claimants are discussed people like you can look down their noses, cast their wild aspersions and continue to spout the narrative that us on benefits are scroungers and layabouts.

I hear your point, but these high prices existed long before UC did. Full price ticket payers are not subsiding UC claimants.

I get that but it just bites a bit that’s if prices can be offered this low then they must be able to afford the general pricing to be lower. I don’t blame UC claimants but the companies, the government etc. because the system is currently laughable

Didn’t it used to be the case that children couldn’t be excluded if they couldn’t pay? Has that changed?

Might have been answered already but only if the whole trip is classed as educational.

So my child’s school will do an educational trip but throw in an ice cream. Children who don’t pay don’t get the ice cream just the trip. It soon singles out the non payers within the peers.

Not saying I agree but a residential trip highly likely won’t be classed as wholly educational so can discriminate in that sense.

Right, so you’re not actually working 42 hrs per week? Even on 37 hrs you’d take home £1770?

I was at work for 42 hours a week and was salaried as I said and no 2 years ago I was not bringing home £1770, it was just over £1600 but you know what, even if I was, that's still a piss poor amount and I challenge anyone to actually pay rent on that and bring up 2 kids without UC top ups.

Nope, there is no requirement.

You can also use NT and SNT membership to the Italian equivalent.

Thanks
I just checked
In case it was worth the trip up
but we live in Kent so probably not

but for those going on holiday or living nearby it’s approx £20/£30 saving 👍

CollieH9g · 28/06/2026 21:30

Yanbu. Best thing is not to visit these places in protest. I refuse to pay so much more than someone who is already being subsidised by benefits. Once the venues realise the rest of us refuse to be mugged off, they may stop this massive difference in price.

ThreadGuardDog · 28/06/2026 21:30

BlackRowan · 28/06/2026 20:30

Well if people receiving PIP are entitled ti this discount and PIP is not means tested it’s making it quite ridiculous

Jesus wept here we go again. Most of these concessions are not available to those on PIP with no other means tested benefits. PIP claimants are usually required to pay their own entrance fee, and the fee for any essential carer is either free or discounted.

I actually can’t comprehend why anyone would begrudge someone disabled enough to claim PIP a discounted day out with a carer to attend to them. This is possibly one of the most ill considered and mealy mouthed threads on MN.

Thankfully your pp has been deleted. Another post from you showing a lack of understanding. Autism is a disability. There is no apparent about it. If their DC are getting DLA, then there’s no apparent about it. They have provided evidence their DC are eligible. It isn’t for you to say they aren’t.

I know autism is a disability, and I know there are people who absolutely take the piss in claiming their child is autistic. It really isn’t always difficult to get a diagnosis, it depends entirely on the consultant you see and what you tell them. The people I am referring to are the ones who see a diagnosis as a monthly cheque and other perks such as discounts on days out. If you don’t believe this happens, you are extremely naive

Wow
has any parent at the school told them how horrible it must be for those kids to sit there and watch others eat an ice cream that they can’t have

I think that’s quite evil

ThreadGuardDog · 28/06/2026 21:37

Sirzy · 28/06/2026 14:12

It does but there is a carers element to UC so you still (rightly!) get more because you can’t necessarily work due to caring needs.

I have been able to go back to work term time only in the past couple of years but still get the carers element and actually have no work requirement as part of the UC I have just been lucky to find a job that works for now!

You don’t get ‘more’. UC deducts the £86 a week carers allowance pound for pound and replaces it with a carers element worth £52 a week for caring for someone with a disability for a mandatory 35 hours a week. That’s less than £1.50 an hour. Carers allowance is a pittance and UC just makes it worse.

Honestly I’ve no idea unlikely though as many parents were pissed off paying increased prices to cover non payers.

Parents openly stating they wouldn’t pay because the school won’t stop them going anyway.

So then they introduced the fun parts of the trips for paying parents only those who genuinely couldn’t pay were welcome to talk to the head and allowances made from funds raised by the pta. It was to catch out the cheeky fuckers basically.

A diagnosis doesn’t get you DLA/PIP though. It’s not diagnosis based, it’s needs based. You can get DLA without a diagnosis, and you can have autism but be deemed not eligible for DLA.
The form for claiming DLA is 36 pages long. 36 pages of detailing exactly what your child can’t do and how it affects their life. You also have to provide evidence, they don’t just take your word for it.

Thanks I’ve had a look and that’s a great offer for some
but
OP particularly wanted to see an exhibition at Chatsworth

with the art pass it would cost her
£20 for the pass
plus 50% discount for Chatsworth

Thats more expensive for her
than the full price at Chatsworth

But she could have lots more half price days out as well.

I get it’s not right some are made to subsidise others but I also think it’s horrible to punish the kids quite so obviously

I would guess if they saw a downturn on full paying customers they’d lower the prices for them eventually
