AIBU to report neighbours for repeated Sunday DIY and early noise?

Ndn started with the leaf blower at 8am this morning.

For several months they have being doing diy on Sundays, all day. I did go round last Sunday and asked them if it would be possible to have Sundays as a non diy day as per our local council’s guidelines. I was met with stony faces and reluctant acknowledgment of the council’s rules re diy hours.

This morning, the leaf blower started followed by shouting from neighbour on the other side.

WIBU to report them for noise nuisance?

Report away, I can't see that anyone would do much though.

Chlorpool · 27/06/2026 14:44

I would wait and see if they're quiet tomorrow as requested.

MsSquiz · 27/06/2026 14:44

Well today is Saturday…

UncannyFanny · 27/06/2026 14:45

I think the problem now is that if you do report it they are going to know who it was. My council has similar rules for noisy DIY, no later that 6.30pm weekdays, 2pm Saturday and none at all allowed Sunday or Bank Holiday.

daffodilandtulip · 27/06/2026 14:47

Despite the rules, you’d be hard pressed to get the council to actually do anything about it.

Are you sure that's right paid contractors are often restricted to certain hours but I've never heard of householders having such restrictions

Not necessarily. They might think it was the other neighbours since they were the ones complaining this morning

100% rules also apply to households in my area

Or the neighbours on the other side - who are pissed off as well.

Every week would be annoying but the timing seem ok, 8am in on the early side but not indecent in my mind.

BigYellowBus · 27/06/2026 14:58

I don't understand. You've asked them not to do DIY on Sunday and now you want to report them for doing it on Saturday. Am i missing something?

MsSquiz · 27/06/2026 14:58

Can you share the local council’s guidelines?

Itscominghometoscotland · 27/06/2026 14:59

The council will ask for your name and address and will more than likely tell them who it was. And if you want to sell you’d have to declare a dispute.

Where I live, you’re not allowed loud noises and diy on Saturday before 10am

Which county council?

Pinkywoo · 27/06/2026 15:04

Was the other neighbour's shouting of the stfu variety?

Secretseverywhere · 27/06/2026 15:07

I find those rules a bit strange as my own council has bin Lorries, strimmers, leaf blowing and grass cutting going on from 7:30am on a Sunday all day long. Folk would be outraged if council workers could and we couldn’t!

PintofFizz · 27/06/2026 15:09

Blimey OP. Never move to a rural farming area will you.

Yes

GUIDELINES are for GUIDANCE not enforcement.
Not only is reporting a waste of time, but blowing leaves at 8am on a Saturday won't be considered a disturbance.

As for Sundays, if they can show that the work will be finished shortly, which will probably b finished by the time it gets to them, it will be a waste of time for everyone too.

GinaandGin · 27/06/2026 15:27

Lol
You have giving me a right laugh
What are you expecting the council to do
Jail them?
Seriously wise up

It will give the council a wee laugh

Gardenisablooming · 27/06/2026 15:32

No, but like the police, they record/tabulate the reports which can be useful in the future either for general initiatives against anti social behaviour, or if the particular person in this case goes on to be anti-social in other respects. It's worth reporting these things even if nothing is immediately done, as it does create a record for future use.
