AIBU to report neighbours for repeated Sunday DIY and early noise?

Senso · 27/06/2026 14:41

Ndn started with the leaf blower at 8am this morning.

For several months they have being doing diy on Sundays, all day. I did go round last Sunday and asked them if it would be possible to have Sundays as a non diy day as per our local council’s guidelines. I was met with stony faces and reluctant acknowledgment of the council’s rules re diy hours.

This morning, the leaf blower started followed by shouting from neighbour on the other side.

WIBU to report them for noise nuisance?

Well to be fair that is utter nonsense that people can't do diy for most of the weekend.

GUIDELINES are for GUIDANCE not enforcement.
Not only is reporting a waste of time, but blowing leaves at 8am on a Saturday won't be considered a disturbance.

As for Sundays, if they can show that the work will be finished shortly, which will probably b finished by the time it gets to them, it will be a waste of time for everyone too.

You’re missing the point.

when multiple neighbours are annoyed by the noise you’re making, then you are the asshole

Where I live, you’re not allowed loud noises and diy on Saturday before 10am

Utterly ridiculous

Might be an asshole or anti social but that doesn't mean they can't do it or anyone official can stop them.

MsSquiz · 27/06/2026 16:59

ill ask again, can you share the local council guidelines?

I’ve just checked my council off the back of this and they only specify these hours for “construction site noise”, which I don’t think you could include someone doing home renovations on a property they’re currently residing in under.

I’d be interested to see which councils include home improvements (which are mainly done at evenings and weekends, due to people working during the week) under the same noise pollution rules as a construction site.

2chocolateoranges · 27/06/2026 17:05

We have a neighbour who is retired he could get up and make noise during the week when 90% of the neighbours are getting up and going to work, oh no he saves it for a Saturday and Sunday at 8am when most of the neighbours are hoping for a long lie, if it’s not the electric saw, it’s the power washer or the leaf blower or he’s hammering, fuck knows what he’s hammering as it’s most weekends!

it’s so annoying.

A leaf blower would come under everyday domestic noise, like a lawnmower. 8am is not early.

Blowing leaves off your lawn at 8am does not make you an asshole. 6am, maybe. 8am, no.

Blimey OP. Never move to a rural farming area will you.

This. Our farmer neighbour was wrapping bales of hay at 7am. Tractors bombing up & down and dogs yapping after a night of owls hooting and deer barking.

And you're worried about a leaf blower 😁

Judging · 27/06/2026 17:12

Councils have ‘noisy work’ guidelines, but they are aimed at construction and building works.

You can report a noise nuisance, and you’d be asked to keep a diary, but DIY on a Sunday is unlikely to be considered a nuisance.

literallyevery · 27/06/2026 17:15

OP I totally get it, it’s bloody annoying! My NDN was a serial DIY’er using power tools regularly at the weekend, like drills and power saws that were soooo loud. He’d often get the leaf blower and jet wash out too. I’m so glad because he’s just had a hand operation for arthritis so the noise has stopped. But now instead we are enduring his noisy garden radio instead.
Id wait until tomorrow and if you hear it early again report it. Who cares if they know it’s you, they deserve it for being inconsiderate neighbours.

I think the problem now is that if you do report it they are going to know who it was. My council has similar rules for noisy DIY, no later that 6.30pm weekdays, 2pm Saturday and none at all allowed Sunday or Bank Holiday.

Sadly they're not actual rules 😠

Theworldsgonemadagain · 27/06/2026 17:20

What a load of nonsense, bank holidays are an ideal time to get on adn do DIY. Are you say in all day? Do you not go out?

A milk tanker thunders down our lane to the dairy farm at 4am every day. If you didn't know what it was you'd think it was the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Meadowfinch · 27/06/2026 17:30

Out of interest I've just checked our council site and loud parties, shouting, drilling etc after 11pm or before 7am are seen as noise nuisance.

Every day noise like hoovering, lawn mowing, car doors, children playing etc between 7am and 11pm are normal domestic noise and are not generally actionable.

So I don't think anyone will be interested OP. 8am is perfectly acceptable.

I remember camping one year and it was clearly harvest with the big ole combines.

It woke me up in the tent at 6am swear it sounded like it was about to come combine my tent up. Nearly shit my sleeping bag.

PintofFizz · 27/06/2026 17:45

Sounds terrifying@Tableforjoan. People would have been picking bits of sleeping bag and tent fabric out of their Weetabix.

Extra bone fibre pole in this one.

It was a good field away but the way the sound traveled that morning. I sleep the car side these days 🤣🤣

Sometimesitsmyownfault · 27/06/2026 17:56

I live in France and we were given permission by the prefecture to do noisy gardening from 6am but only for the week. I mowed my lawn at 7am on Thursday. No one is supposed to make noise between 12 & 2pm and not at all on a Sunday. Most people stick to it. Apart from my neighbours hunting dogs that bark all bloody day, every day.

Honeyhonay · 27/06/2026 17:59

Literally no one is going to do anything about them using a leaf blower at 8am or DIY on a Sunday. Maybe the work all week and just don’t want to life in a shit hole?
This is all just part of normal living imo,
people will need to do maintenance on their home.

Blimms · 27/06/2026 18:01

There’s a good chance this would turn into a tit for tat. Your neighbour will know it’s one of you and will start reporting other types of noise made by you and the others.

Walkden · 27/06/2026 18:02

"Out of interest I've just checked our council site and loud parties, shouting, drilling etc after 11pm or before 7am are seen as noise nuisance."

That's literally the law and the cut off timed for noise. Same reason you are supposed to avoid using your car horn before 7am and after 11pm.

OP has an issue with neighbours doind DIY on Saturdays and Sundays. Most councils specify guidelines for building work but this would not include DIY. This day and age with CoL increases and tradesman costs I am not surprised that more people resort to DIY.

I rent so not an issue

They’ll still tell them it was you. Most likely.

Itscominghometoscotland · 27/06/2026 18:14

Maybe they have bought and they spend their time looking down on the renters next door. Just a thought op.

In your other post you described them as guidelines though, not the same thing.
