AIBU to report neighbours for repeated Sunday DIY and early noise?

Ndn started with the leaf blower at 8am this morning.

For several months they have being doing diy on Sundays, all day. I did go round last Sunday and asked them if it would be possible to have Sundays as a non diy day as per our local council’s guidelines. I was met with stony faces and reluctant acknowledgment of the council’s rules re diy hours.

This morning, the leaf blower started followed by shouting from neighbour on the other side.

WIBU to report them for noise nuisance?

In the heatwave, the only chance to do anything active outside is early morning and late night so give them some slack atm.

BridgetJonesV2 · 27/06/2026 19:03

We've had one NDN mowing their lawn at 6am with a petrol mower. Another letting their screeching whinging toddler out at 6.45am. People outside in the road having a natter loudly while taking their dogs out really early. Bins collections from 5,30am onwards, and the milkman delivering extra early.

You just have to accept noise in a heatwave. It's eerily silent during the day as everyone is either getting on with stuff at the crack of dawn/last light.

hyggetyggedotorg · 27/06/2026 19:07

So where you live people aren’t allowed to do DIY at the weekend? So, when do you do it?

ill ask again, can you share the local council guidelines?

This is none of your or our business. Are you a tabloid reporter trying to out the OP or something?

No, just a normal person curious to see the guidelines 🤷🏻‍♀️

how could I out the OP based on them sharing their local council guidelines? Has the sun gone to your head?

AgnesMcDoo · 27/06/2026 19:56

What do you think will happen if you ‘report’ them?

AgentPidge · 27/06/2026 20:01

The council will ask for your name and address and will more than likely tell them who it was. And if you want to sell you’d have to declare a dispute.

I don't think you'd have to declare this - it's only if you have a legal dispute (ie. It goes to court), isn't it?

Maybe the owner does it every weekend. Ours does, has done for about two years.

No the sun hasn’t gone to my head but this is red meat and fodder for tabloids like the Daily Fail to pick up.

I can’t see why a leaf blower is a Problem
at 8am. It had been light for over theew
hours.

laurini · 27/06/2026 21:37

Idk where OP lives but the pdf linked to on this page states that, for DIY carried on outside of the specified hours, the council can issue an enforcement notice. If it's not complied with, they can impose a fine.

You’re missing the point.

when multiple neighbours are annoyed by the noise you’re making, then you are the asshole

They’re hardly using it all day. Would not consider it work or renovations.

SquirrelGG · 27/06/2026 22:14

Get a grip! Why are so many MNers intolerant? One of my neighbours often does noisy stuff all weekend, I couldn't care less I just get on with my life. Try it, it's really not that difficult.

I’m guessing you are the noisy neighbour

"the pdf linked to on this page states that, for DIY carried on outside of the specified hours, the council can issue an enforcement notice. If it's not complied with, they can impose a fine."

That's a selective summary. It also states that this would depend on the type of DIY, whether heavy machinery is being used and whether the activity could be considered construction in which case time restrictions apply.

Use of a leaf blower, power tools like a circular saw drills etc is hardly going to qualify...

wombat1a · 28/06/2026 06:49

I don't think 8 am on a Sat for a left blower is a problem, I much prefer doing jobs early on and the having the rest of the day to do other things.
If the dew was off the grass at 8am on a Sat I for sure would have no issue about cutting my lawns then - far nicer than doing it later on when it hotter.

Upstartled · 28/06/2026 06:50

8am is reasonable from a council perspective. If he was firing up the lawnmower at 2am, you'd have a case.

Easterchicken · 28/06/2026 20:18

Where in the stepford wives do you live with council "rules" on when people can renovate and work on their own property

You are being completely unreasonable op if the neighbours work this may be their only time to do home improvement work

I suppose you aren’t interested in having a good relationship with your neighbours. They work they literally have one day a week to do what they need to in their home and you’re only prolonging your hearing DIY. They are going to commence making you miserable. So I suppose it doesn’t matter if you report them or not.

Janus · 28/06/2026 20:20

Honestly this is bonkers! You asked him not to do work on a Sunday so he obliges and works on a Saturday instead and you’re still not happy?? 8am is not the middle of the night! I’d maybe wait until 9am but I have a feeling you’d not be happy with that either?? If you’re on mumsnet do you not have children you have to get up for anyway?
I can’t see the problem, some people have parties next door through the night and I’d feel sorry for them but not a leaf blower at 8am!

Noodles1234 · 28/06/2026 20:26

Our council is power tools 8am-6pm Mon-Fri. 8-12pm Sat and nothing on a Sunday unless emergencies. I don’t mind the odd thing, but not every Sunday.

hahabahbag · 28/06/2026 20:30

Contractors need to abide by certain rules but for diy the only requirement is to be reasonable. For my council they suggest no power tools before 10am or after 5pm on Sundays. Leaf blowing comes under gardening anyway but again fair use in my council area is 10am-5pm

Mama2many73 · 28/06/2026 20:53

We have a 'near' neighbour who could do their garden at least ½the week but chooses
EVERY bank holiday Sunday and Monday they have a Strimmer or lawn mowing going at 9am, literally on the dot.
Other Sundays its 8am.
They are horrible spiteful neighbour who have been the reason the house near door has been sold 6 times since we moved here, and one of them was a rental for 6yrs (4 families).

Abricot1983 · 28/06/2026 21:13

They are new. They will lose the energy in time. Just keep a record but do not report.

Droplet789 · 28/06/2026 21:28

I’d rather live next to people who take care of their home. 8am is a little early but it’s unreasonable to say no DIY and I’m not even sure gardening is classed as DIY.
