Is it acceptable to travel in shorts and sandals?

Help! The friend group is split on this one and it is largely tongue in cheek

We’re off on a girls holiday soon. Half the group thinks it’s fine to travel in shorts and sandals (Birkenstocks), the other half thinks you need to look put together in the airport and dress in a nice outfit (linen, silk trousers etc), in case of an upgrade. They think the nicer you’re dressed the less likely you are to be asked to check your bag at the gate etc.

So, is it acceptable?! They’re not tiny shorts that show my bum cheeks!

The last time I flew you could put in a bid to pay extra if there were any upgrades and I suppose the highest bid gets the upgrade.

I don’t own any linen or silk trousers so I’d be very unpopular with your friends 😂

Me neither

Thigh pic required. Also pic of shorts in question. Its seriously a question of more things than length.

I mean I’m overweight but I don’t think they’re that bad. They’re these shorts from m&s

sorry- but they are way too short for a plane trip. Just as a courtesy I would never have bare flesh on a plane seat and would put something underneath me if I do. You're on it for hours not minutes.

They fall to about three inches above my knee, there’s nothing explicit about my thigh

I’ve sized up, so that they’re nice and roomy

Cotton or cargo kneelengths would be better, more practical, those look like knickers

corblimeygvnr · Yesterday 17:08

They look very flappy ! Remind me of those running men who wear loose shirts with splits up the side 😬

A relative of mine worked in the travel industry and got his foot badly broken when it was run over by a luggage trolley. Since then I don't wear open toed shoes for travel. I wouldn't wear those shorts either as I think your legs will stick to the seats but it's your call.

Having said that, as a PP said, you are not getting upgraded on a BA flight to Mykonos. The plane is designed to be flexible. The business class section is just a normal economy seat with the middle seat blocked out. Before the flight the crew will look at how many passengers are booked in business, block out the middle seats for the required number of passengers, and move the curtain. I suppose there is an outside chance on an over booked flight that they might need to upgrade 1 or 2 people if they've overbooked economy and there's a spare seat in the business section but the likelihood is they'll choose a frequent flyer and/or solo travellers.

Flying on a plane requires wearing cottons/natural fibres and decent shoes - if you need to exit the plane quickly or god forbid escape from a fire you’re not going to want to be wearing flimsy footwear or clothes that melt into your skin.

Edited

Doesn't that apply wherever you go if you're going to worry about these things? If you need to escape a bus, train, car quicky, or a tidal wave or a bear you need sensible shoes.

angelikacpickles · Yesterday 17:17

This thread is bizarre. Of course shorts and sandals are acceptable on a flight to a holiday destination (or anywhere TBH).

Topseyt123 · Yesterday 17:19

I'm sure the criteria for an upgrade will not include whether you are wearing silk/linen trousers.

Personally, I find their reasoning ridiculous. If flying to a hot destination I wear shorts and a t-shirt with comfortable walking sandals or slip-on trainers. Hell, I've sometimes even travelled wearing my crocs. 😎 I also have a cardigan with me that I can easily slip on and off because the air conditioning on planes can sometimes be a bit on the cold side. I'm very stylish! 😉😃

Wear whatever you are comfortable with.

MissMoneyFairy · Yesterday 17:29

Do you have the flight number to check if they even have business which is usually only the middle economy seat closed, you can buy a entrance ticket to the ba lounge, fast track security, extra baggage if you want but short haul business is a bit of a rip off

OneBlueFinch · Yesterday 16:55

Well, okay! I was a bit quick to post that, but you kind of know what I mean, don't you? All the short haul and cheap airlines are strictly one class, and there might be economy plus or business on some routes but most of those only really amount to the same seats in front or behind the curtain (and better grub I guess). Not much of an upgrade really. Real upgrades would be to first, and I don't know if there are many first class services left across Europe. I'd better not say there aren't any, though.

Happy to be corrected but I'm not sure I've ever seen a BA mainline shorthaul aircraft without at least some Club seating, but I guess there's always a first time.

sevenwonde · Yesterday 17:45

I’ve flown BA “business” before out to Amsterdam, from London. Utter rubbish, but worth it for the baggage allowance

OP posts:
notimagain · Yesterday 17:57

When I was a regular I always reckoned the Club breakfasts were a bonus, especially after a long night shift, no idea what they serve now.

I'd agree the upgrade in seating is pretty much non-existent (nil in terms of legroom) but you at least had a bit of guaranteed elbow room if you needed a snooze.

Beachforever · Yesterday 18:01

sevenwonde · Yesterday 10:54

We’re flying BA to Mykonos. They think there’s a chance if we get lucky. No cabin crew with us but they’re genuinely horrified that I would consider wearing shorts! My rationale is it’s an evening flight, I have appointments in the morning before I travel and have to get to the airport. I don’t want to be hot and sweaty before we get on a plane!

You won’t get bumped up on Euro Traveller. The business class section is completely flexible and so they just move the partition to where ever in the cabin it needs to be for how many Club Europe seats they’ve sold. Sometimes it’s 3 rows, sometimes it’s 7 etc.

Personally, I always travel in trousers, trainers with socks, and a jumper in my bag because I find flights freezing.

Runsaway · Yesterday 18:05

Sandals are OK if you want but I wouldn’t ever wear shorts, personally.

BauhausOfEliott · Yesterday 18:06

However well dressed you are, a group of women on a ‘girls’ trip’ or a group do men on a ‘lads’ trip’ are very unlikely to get upgraded.

Was it a City flyer? That will have been an Embraer E190, 4 chairs wide, they're much smaller and more flexible than an A320, 6 seats wide. As you saw on the Embraer, it's exactly the same chairs but they just move the curtain back on the rails for the 30 minute flight 😂

Ronathediva13 · Today 12:37

Forget the flight, I would be looking to upgrade my friends to some who were less shallow.
