Is it acceptable to travel in shorts and sandals?

Help! The friend group is split on this one and it is largely tongue in cheek

We’re off on a girls holiday soon. Half the group thinks it’s fine to travel in shorts and sandals (Birkenstocks), the other half thinks you need to look put together in the airport and dress in a nice outfit (linen, silk trousers etc), in case of an upgrade. They think the nicer you’re dressed the less likely you are to be asked to check your bag at the gate etc.

So, is it acceptable?! They’re not tiny shorts that show my bum cheeks!

How often has it worked for your friends?

Those shorts look like summer pyjama shorts. Dont wear them to the airport

Why not?

ZenGarden89 · Today 18:59

This is hilarious. I’m assuming the friends who think one needs to dress up for air travel are either ancient or have never flown before? Won’t they check in online before they go? Where do they expect to see this magic fairy that will upgrade them? And how naive to think that ground staff will be impressed by their linen and think that they couldn’t possibly travel with the prols?! I’m just imagining a whole load of Hyacinth Buckets rocking up in their creased linen expecting the red carpet! 😂

I work in International Trade Deals and purchase 50 seats with BA to take CEO’s around the world, I’ve just returned from San Diego and I’m off to Japan next. I’ve yet to be upgraded but do keep trying, Birkenstocks definitely hinder your chances.

Myli1 · Today 19:25

Absolutely fine as long as you don’t take your shoes off and poke your bare feet through the gap between the seats in front! 😁 (And yes that has happened to me!)

Chilly80 · Today 19:28

That's not how they choose upgrades

MyMiniMetro · Today 19:30

Some of your friends think they are living in a 90’s romcom. If your outfit is suitable to wear in a nice UK shopping centre, then it’s fine for your average holiday travel.

emmetgirl · Today 19:30

The last time I was on a plane it was for a 10 hour flight.
They were lucky I even bothered to put a bra on.
Loose fitting t-shirt, sweat pants with an elasticated waist and sandals.

hahabahbag · Today 19:31

Wear what you prefer, personally I prefer dresses as I find them more comfortable. You are not getting an upgrade

hahabahbag · Today 19:38

Tbh op they look like pjs though.

keepswimming38 · Today 19:38

The main problem sitting on a plane in shorts is that you get cold. Long trousers and trainers always when flying plus in an emergency you don’t want to be in Birkenstocks!

I don't like the idea of sweaty bare\sandled feet in a tight enclosed space.

Knock yourself out with the shorts but wear trainers or shoes.

I know what you mean. I've seen too many arses bent over in aisles showing far too much even when encased in Lycra 😬 . People don't seem to think . Horrible sight of a woman squatting in white linen trousers with her crack basically on view. 🤮

TransportNerd · Today 19:44

BA only provide Club Europe on short haul flights because most passengers in it transfer to or from long-haul Club World or First. They need something marginally better than economy to offer those passengers. I often fly from Edinburgh to London, and virtually everyone in Club on those flights gets straight onto long-haul flights at T5.

It's not worth buying on its own for a short flight, to be honest.

I think that’s why I like them so much to be honest

Birkenstock are fine as long as your feet don’t stink. But I think you should wear a dress or trousers personally. Don’t think it’s great to have bare legs sweating on plane seats. Appreciate this is just one view but this is my own view. I usually travel in linen trousers.

AlwaysHungry123 · Today 20:13

The only reason I wouldn’t wear shorts and sandals on the flight is because it’s bloody freezing on the plane!

Skyflymom · Today 20:27

Cabin crew here, wear something that covers your legs! Trust me, in the event of an emergency you do not want to have to go down an evacuation slide in shorts!

MarionHaste · Today 20:35

The threshold for flight-related DVT starts at 4 hours, so you might want to consider your risk factors and whether to wear compression stockings, in which case you will surely want to wear long trousers.

We’re flying BA to Mykonos. They think there’s a chance if we get lucky. No cabin crew with us but they’re genuinely horrified that I would consider wearing shorts! My rationale is it’s an evening flight, I have appointments in the morning before I travel and have to get to the airport. I don’t want to be hot and sweaty before we get on a plane!

You'll be grand wear what you want and feel comfy in,ive seen more people going on hols in joggers, shorts and flip flops than I have the stuck up twin set and pearls brigade!!!
Ive actually seen girls get on planes with a full set of rollers in!

Do legs smell? I think this is a fantasy the new adverts for whole body deodorant are trying to create.

In my view anything can smell and sweat if it’s on a plastic/leatherly surface for long enough on the plane. It’s more about the sweat and not wanting to sit in a seat where others have sweated onto it with naked arms/legs.

The general guidance from most travel experts, cabin crew etc seems to be:

avoid open toed shoes/sandals/flip flops - planes and airports aren’t the most sanitary places, no protection should a bag land on your toe/ get wheeled over your foot, plus open shoes give no protection when your feet swell during flight;

don’t wear shorts - besides the comfort factor if it gets cold mid flight, plane seats are filthy (only deep cleaned every 1-3 months) and both MRSA and E.coli bacteria live for days on fabric….all that sitting directly on your bare skin 🤢;

no jumpsuits / playsuits (for the obvious faff of going to the loo in the tiny, dirty plane toilet) and also don’t wear jeans with waistbands that are too tight - the altitude makes your stomach expand and makes you retain water and bloat, so you’ll only end up feeling uncomfortable; finally

avoid wearing white (turbulence x drinks/food = laundry disaster) and don’t apply strong/overpowering fragrances in consideration of fellow passengers who may be sensitive, as the recycled air means it will circulate throughout the cabin.

I’ve genuinely never heard any of this before

I tend to put on socks when on the plane No way would I sit with my feet enclosed in trainers or shoes while flying . Just slip sandals over them to go to the loo One of my flights was nearly bloody 18 hours .Sodbtgat
