Going out for a run without water

Shock horror.

If I don't post in an hour you'll know I've died of heatstroke eye roll

I never take water with me for less than an hour. It really annoys me to carry it.

That said, I am going on an 8 mile hilly hike this afternoon (about 3.5 hours walking time) and am carrying 3 litres plus electrolytes.

GasPanic · 25/06/2026 10:07

I used to do it all the time. Didn't cause me any issues. On a very hot day did take the occassional diversion via a tap though and always had a couple of quid on me to buy something if necessary.

Then there are people that run around with a water bottle permanently in hand, and a reserve 2 strapped to their backs just in case.

A hat is probably more important on a hot day if you can't keep to the shade.

BauhausOfEliott · 25/06/2026 11:16

OK. And?

Unless you're going to be out for hours, you're unlikely to need it.

AliceAbsolum · 25/06/2026 11:22

Less of a aibu and more me being sarky.

Turns out my HR got up to 180 and I felt quite sick when I got in. So more fool me 😂

I can only say that you are being stupidly selfish...its a major health threat...its not like you're running into a burning building to save a baby. You are putting yourself at risk for what "oh look at me I'm a runner" the NHS is creaking at the seams and people like you who deliberately put themselves at risk are making it worse

Why not pull your arse out of bed at 6am when it was a pleasant 22 degrees and run then...no go out in the full bloody sun....well I hope you're chafed!

She probably overheated less through running than you did typing that rant. Calm down, mate. You sound like you've got steam coming out of your ears.

If she was out for two hours then yes, obviously water is required. But if it was a 30 minute run and she was properly hydrated at the start, and drank water as soon as she'd finished, she's highly unlikely to be at risk of collapse.

As someone who is quite prone to nausea from strenuous exercise, I sympathise.

My dilemma is always trying to balance hydration with the fact that if my stomach's full of water when I start running, I want to heave halfway through!

Oh give over. Unless she was running to and fro across the M25 the risk is minimal for somebody that's a regular runner. And for all we know she might be in Thurso.

BringBackCatsEyes · 25/06/2026 11:50

How far did you go.
If I was really hydrated and going for a short (3 miles or so) gentle run in the shade I’d be ok.
Anything else would be miserable.
I only ever get tummy trouble when running when it’s really hot - dehydration I guess.

Dermatologically · 25/06/2026 11:51

What were you hoping to achieve? Why wouldn't you be cautious in this weather? I don't understand.

It’s the day before you need to think about. Making sure you’re fully hydrated well before is preferable to chugging just before you go.

Hilarious. You're right I didn't think about the NHS 😂 I did 5k well hydrated kept to the shade and drank water before and afterwards.... Maybe I should have called my local ICU to let them know just in case I needed an admission and they didn't have a bed 😅

I just run most days, rain or shine. If you start telling yourself it's too hot too cold to wet ect you'd never go out.

Least I'm thinking of the nhs by keeping healthy! 😁

Yes this. I did 5k in the shade.

DH did 11 miles. Was fine.

Fair play OP. I went out at 8.45 and it was already showing as being 27 degrees where I am! I only had enough in the tank for 2.5 miles. I hate running in any sort of heat, mentally I really struggle.

But then I am a weirdo who will be in shorts and a vest when its below 5 degrees and still say I get too hot on my runs!

Yeah I run or gym most days too. I think of the NHS by keeping healthy and taking account of the weather. Taking extra water, running when it's cooler etc. I don't not run. And I certainly don't post weird sarky messages on forums that encourage other people to ignore the weather conditions

I do the same, force myself out the door or I'd never go. I ran 10km yesterday and I pretty much never bring a drink because it annoys me no matter how I carry it. I ran slow enough to keep my heart rate low. I was soaked in sweat by the time I got home but I had some electrolytes and was fine, felt better for having a session. My red exercise face took about 3 hours to calm down afterwards though.

Definitely didn't encourage anyone to ignore any health warnings. I just think the anxiety around the heat is ridiculous. Not that the media helps either

I ran this morning but it was early...5:30am so didn't need water.

Was still feeling warm though!

AmberFawn · 25/06/2026 12:31

What is the point of this thread except to boast and attention seek?

Ohthisheat · 25/06/2026 12:31

Depends how hot it is where you are, OP, but if you ran for an hour in 30C or more without a drink, you are bonkers!

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/06/2026 12:32

I run every other day and rarely take water with me. Its a faff having to carry it. I just make sure I drink a fair bit before and after. If you’re reasonably fit and its 5k or less you should be fine.

That said I wouldn’t run in this heat. I did a short run at 7.45am and that was bad enough.

BringBackCatsEyes · 25/06/2026 12:33

I have enjoyed going out on my bike. The long days mean I can get a good ride in after work.

ERthree · 25/06/2026 12:33

Only mad dogs English men and fools run in the midday heat. Surely to god we all have enough sense to not exercise outside in 30+ heat? Obviously not.

Thmi74ci7rv · 25/06/2026 12:34

Oh God your brave. I darent even leave the house without a bottle of water atm, I feel like i would die 😅
