Shock horror.

If I don't post in an hour you'll know I've died of heatstroke eye roll

"After days of high temperatures in Paris, the health minister said the ambulance service in Paris had seen four times more cardiac arrests than normal over a 24-hour period, although she stressed there were no confirmed figures for the number of deaths linked to the heatwave.
Paris mayor Emmanuel Grégoire said the mortality rate was on the rise in the capital.
"We must not believe ourselves to be invulnerable," he told French TV. "I am thinking especially about the youth... At about 19:30 last night... I saw 100 or so joggers on the street. Frankly, that's irresponsible."
"It's fine to take a couple of days off from exercising," he added."

Europe's heatwave shifts east as as France raises health alert to highest level

Temperatures in Germany could hit 40C in some areas while French officials say deaths linked to the heat are being seen among young people.

@CagedBirdInACage perhaps buy a screw top bottle and teach yourself how to drink without slurping.
Re Africans running. I agree that hydration before exertion is important and eating every part of an animal helps with that. I was catering at a church/afternoon party on Sunday. A few of my African friends were there, they strategically eat water fruits, in-between eating general buffet stuff. I'd included them deliberately knowing they'd want them. We should all learn how to read our own bodies, take note of our wee colour etc. We can eat in a way that gives us better hydration.

What do you think manual workers do in hot countries?

Have a siesta

Have a siesta

My son worked as a landscape gardener in northern Queensland for a couple of years, so lots of digging and shifting heavy stuff around. It would regularly get over 30 degrees C and I don’t remember him talking about having siestas. They started early, wore hats and drank a lot of water. He wasn’t being exploited by an evil boss or anything, it was just normal outdoor work.

I mowed the lawn and then went for a run yesterday. It was 6-7pm and about 30C then. There was actually a light breeze and I chose the shady paths. It was fine. I didn’t take water on my run but I stayed hydrated throughout the day so a mere 30 minutes without a drink wasn’t a problem at all.

I felt a million times better after I’d done it. Got home, had a cool shower, a drink and something to eat and it was actually really nice. I think people tend to know their own bodies. I wasn’t punishing myself; I really felt like going and I knew I’d feel better for some exercise.

I never go out without water in general
You never know when you might need it.

CrayonCritic · 26/06/2026 15:11

“I’ve never experienced it and therefore it doesn’t exist” 🙃

It being heatstroke, dehydration etc.

Less of a aibu and more me being sarky.

Turns out my HR got up to 180 and I felt quite sick when I got in. So more fool me 😂

And there we go…

Definitely didn't encourage anyone to ignore any health warnings. I just think the anxiety around the heat is ridiculous. Not that the media helps either

I think you really need to open your eyes a little to other people’s situations. Just because you are coping well, doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone, and other people’s day to day activities and locations will be different.

igelkott2026 · 26/06/2026 15:40

I don't like running with water as I find carrying a bottle a nuisance I take it to a club training session because I can leave it in one place and go back to it between efforts but not on a longer run, I just make sure I am well hydrated beforehand and afterwards.

I haven't been on a run since Monday though. Far too hot to run even with water and I am too lazy to get up and run at 6am.

outdamnhot · 26/06/2026 15:58

I'm in the red zone here. There is no way I would have gone out running at the time you did. Do my exercise outside at 8am and back by 9 for a day of fans and chilled water in my house!

Forestgreenblue · 26/06/2026 16:19

I never take water with me - ever. I have a berocca in a decent size glass before heading out each time and then a pint of water when I get in. In fact - getting back home for water is often my motivation especially in heat

BauhausOfEliott · 26/06/2026 18:24

Whenever people say 'People have a siesta in hot countries, they don't do manual work when the day's at its hottest' are missing the point that actually, even if they take a couple of hours off in the afternoon, they are absolutely still doing manual work in temperatures of 30+, because it can easily be 30+ in plenty of countries in the mornings and evenings. Someone working outside at 10am or 6pm in, eg, southern Mediterranean countries will frequently still be working in temperatures above 30.

I never take water when I run… too much of a hassle to carry (I guess there are strap on things?)

although you are very committed to running in this heat… water or not

I just run most days, rain or shine. If you start telling yourself it's too hot too cold to wet ect you'd never go out.

Least I'm thinking of the nhs by keeping healthy! 😁

This is ridiculous. Some days it is too hot.
It's adult to be able to adjust dependent on circumstances.
