Going out for a run without water

Shock horror.

If I don't post in an hour you'll know I've died of heatstroke eye roll

Personally I don’t know why anybody is running between the hours of 7:30 & 7:30. The heatwave will be much better next week, either miss a run or schedule it at a better time.

I saw idiots out running at 2pm yesterday. 36 degrees here. And yes they are idiots. Unless they’re training for a marathon in the Sahara, there is no need to be out at that time risking their health for a bloody jog.

ERthree · 25/06/2026 12:33

Only mad dogs English men and fools run in the midday heat. Surely to god we all have enough sense to not exercise outside in 30+ heat? Obviously not.

What do you think manual workers do in hot countries?

But they're not risking their health if they're sensible about it.

People have different heat tolerance profiles though. I wouldn’t do it but for a very fit marathon runner who can take the heat it’s probably fine.

BillieWiper · 25/06/2026 12:42

I'm absolutely terrible at running. In fact I don't even think I can anymore for the sake of my dodgy bones?! But I guess if you're used to it you can do without water for half an hour! I guess the heat is what might be overwhelming today.

Sensible means being hydrated which means a lot of topping up in high temperatures. .

What is the point of this thread except to boast and attention seek?

Tbf this is a big part of why MNs exists!

People who run regularly generally love running.

It's kind of hard to explain it to people who have never done it. You kind of get addicted to it. It does take some time. It's not like you go out for one run and then you spend the rest of your life doing it as much as possible. But it is something that builds over time and becomes part of your routine. It was for me anyway.

Running in heat is fine, you just have to know your own limitations, make sure you are hydrated beforehand (if you don't drink while running) and do stuff to mitigate the temperatures where possible (slow down, keep to the shade, wear a hat etc).

Most sensible people know their own limits and don't need others to judge for them whether a run is going to be dangerous for them or not.

Since when though? What is constantly? Is half an hour without slurping on some water going to do damage really? If you run all the time you get to know your body, know what pace you need to go at to keep things light not all running is racing. You can do a gentle trot and be less out of breath than some people waking.

RememberTheTimeDifference · 25/06/2026 13:00

Tbf it was only 5k and if OP runs regularly and is hydrated, this wouldn’t be a problem at all. She’d be home in half an hour ish. Saying that, I tend to run early in this weather or use the treadmill with air con when possible.

I know this post is meant to be a bit of fun, but your comment got me thinking (and then googling) Globally, outdoor manual workers are the most vulnerable to heat related illnesses and death. Also, they are often demographically from poorer backgrounds and less able to choose or afford to not work on hot days.

I don't ever take water for less than 10k. If I'm on a longer run I might take a bottle or buy one while I'm out.

AliceAbsolum · 25/06/2026 12:13

Definitely didn't encourage anyone to ignore any health warnings. I just think the anxiety around the heat is ridiculous. Not that the media helps either

I’m with you OP. The last week or two have been a race to the bottom, with total hysteria, misery, and a vibe of “nobody is allowed to enjoy the heat”. It’s probably the same people who loved preaching and moralising during lockdown, who now really miss those times, and are just loving a reason to boss people about.

Dermatologically · 25/06/2026 12:06

Yeah I run or gym most days too. I think of the NHS by keeping healthy and taking account of the weather. Taking extra water, running when it's cooler etc. I don't not run. And I certainly don't post weird sarky messages on forums that encourage other people to ignore the weather conditions

She's not encouraging anyone to do anything.

I'm sure the OP, like you, is more than capable of assessing risks for herself and making her own decisions. She was running 5K, not a marathon.

Being 'hydrated' doesn't mean you can't go 30 minutes without drinking some water.

I can only say that you are being stupidly selfish...its a major health threat...its not like you're running into a burning building to save a baby. You are putting yourself at risk for what "oh look at me I'm a runner" the NHS is creaking at the seams and people like you who deliberately put themselves at risk are making it worse

Why not pull your arse out of bed at 6am when it was a pleasant 22 degrees and run then...no go out in the full bloody sun....well I hope you're chafed!

Not everything is about the NHS.

GasPanic · 25/06/2026 13:22

Being cold is far more dangerous than hot if you ask me.

The only time I ever got concerned when running was when I went out when it was freezing, then it started to rain. Normally that's fine but I did something to my foot while I was a couple of miles in the middle of nowhere. That is bad news because it is only you keeping moving that keeps you from freezing to death when you are soaked through.

Dermatologically · 25/06/2026 13:30

There is something in between hysteria and refusing to even acknowledge the fact that it's hot and maybe you need to take a few sensible precautions.

In fact the op has proven this herself - in her second post she said she made herself sick.

That was completely unnecessary.

I don't really understand the extremes of opinion on this forum really.

chunkymarmalade · 25/06/2026 13:30

Similar to the OP - I don’t carry water when I run. I used to years ago as a beginner even for v short distances but I have learnt over the years what suits me best. I drink before I leave and once I’m finished even for 10+ mile runs with no problems.

Of course it’s sensible to consider the current heatwave - I did try to get out early enough to miss the higher temperatures (although that ended up being 10am rather than 8am with one thing and another). Personally I chose a route I knew would be shady, where I could cut back to a shorter route if I felt it was necessary and I went at a gentle pace. Also as usual I had my phone with me in case anything did go wrong.

TheWildZebra · 25/06/2026 13:31

Not sure if it’s extremes of opinion or extremes of common sense or lack thereof… 🙄

I didn't make myself sick. I felt slightly nauseous on return.

Humans evolved to run long distances in Africa ffs!

@NotAnotherScarf

good grief! Exercise is good for you. OP didn’t wanna sit on her arse, she wanted a run, she did it and she’s fine. No emergency services needed

Are you ok? Are you always so risk averse?
