To have not backed down on this shit of a man on the train?

I went to the toilet on a busy commuter train. Came back and the person I was sat next to has his feet on the seat I had vacated. I said excuse me please to him and he begrudgingly moved his feet and sat down. Hes way over my seat with his body anyway with the way he's sat but when I sat down he said 'for fucks sake'. When I asked if there was an issue and not to say for fucks sake to my simple request, he said I was sitting on his knee. I am absolutely not touching him. I told him so and that the way he is sitting means he is taking up some of my seat and that hes very rude, including putting his skanky feet on the seat. He shut up then, but its time after time of men (and a few women, but mostly men) who have their bags on the seats or are just shit fellow commuters with their incessant sniffing and just being unpleasant when asked to move their belongings to free up a seat. AIBU?

Good for you OP!!

Fiftyandnotsonifty · 25/06/2026 19:00

Well done, this is definitely me too! Even more so if I’ve woken up in a bad mood!!!

GreenSmallBird · 25/06/2026 19:08

I travel by train to work most days. One day on a packed train the entire carriage had had to endure a very loud man having a phone call about selling pipes. Except he kept saying fucking pipes over and over again. As I got up to get off I said at him in the poshest voice I could manage “no one cares how many fucking pipes you sell, shut the fuck up” I actually got a round of applause from other commuters as I stepped off the train.

I always ask for a seat from people who think their bags need one, as I figure some people won't have the confidence to do so.

It's really selfish behaviour

You are pretty selfish not to wonder why people are doing it.

Besides which people with bags DO need more room than those travelling without. Sit next to a bagless bloke next time.

Not once the trains are full. No bag needs a seat more than a person

I always try to put the middle arm rest down as this demarcates the space we each have 😁

I generally do this... but a side effect is sometimes that the other person leans their elbow on it but allows to go way beyond their side and into mine.

1HappyTraveller · 26/06/2026 01:02

YANBU

Dirty shoes on seats. Rank.
He wouldn’t have spoken to a man like that.

VivX · 26/06/2026 01:07

On a busy commuter train, I once asked a man if he could keep to his own side.
Apparently this was really difficult because although he moved, he only managed a few minutes before he was yet again manspreading well into my space and he then sort of angled himself more towards me.

So I asked him to sit straighter so he wasn't in my space.
He then went all indignant and huffy about it without actually making much effort to move.

At which point I said much louder, so half the carriage could hear: "You are so far over the middle and there is literally no reason why your leg should be touching mine at all."

He did move, although there was exaggerated sighing from him for the rest of the journey but his leg did not touch mine again.

suburberphobe · 26/06/2026 01:18

I'd tap his shoulder to "wake" him and TELL him to move off your seat!

Me too.

We paid for our ticket too.

Women, don't be wimps! The more you do not assert your god-given right to make a stand, the more they will take over.

What nonsense.

The seats are for humans and the luggage areas are for luggage.

I make myself larger or sometimes get even closer to these men and rest my head on their shoulder. When they clearly get uncomfortable and move, I apologise and say that I thought it was ok as they had no respect for my personal space. Oh and not to forget, I do this with my sweetest smile!

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 26/06/2026 10:35

I’m sick of this shit too. On planes men who put their feet and arms into your tiny space - on one long haul flight I finally dropped off having wedged my feet to the edge of my space in front of me and arm onto my side of the arm rest to gradually move the man next to me into his space and he slammed his foot on mine and arm onto mine on the arm rest violently. It was not an accident. They think they are entitled to our space.

Completely agree. And call me old fashioned I don’t care: I absolutely cannot stand looking at a man sitting on a train whilst a woman has to stand, or in some cases sitting on the floor. I would be absolutely ashamed if that were my husband or sons. They will always stand for a woman or someone older than them. Yes I know “equality” and all that but there you are

You are out of touch. Men should not have to stand for women on trains.

Ok, you and the noncey men can agree on something I guess

The trouble with this is that middling men are less disgusted by being touched by a woman than we are by being touched by them AND if you're unlucky enough to get a psycho that's the least of your worries.

AgnesMcDoo · 26/06/2026 11:09

I used to get the odd psycho when I was younger and made myself smaller. Yet to have any of them not move for my womanspread or a head lean! I think their tiny little brains can't comprehend the uno reverse move.

I just have to move carriages when there’s any sniffing. I hate it.

I can’t abide sniffing. If I’m near a sniffer I will offer them a tissue (always have a packet in my bag).

More often than not they accept with thanks 😃

cheezncrackers · 26/06/2026 16:52

Hell is other people. I had to travel by train on Monday. I was trying to read my book in peace. Woman sat next to me with headphones on at such a volume I could hear every word of her crap music. Woman in the seat behind was having an inane conversation on her phone with it on loud speaker. Another person had some kind of alarm going off on their phone for about 5 mins (maybe they were asleep - I couldn't see). People are such inconsiderate twats these days!!

JoyousOpalLemur · 26/06/2026 16:56

How did he put his feet on your seat if he was sat next to you?

Am smelling something rather fishy about this, and it's not his skanky feet.

FFSItsTooHot · 26/06/2026 17:06

Good for you for standing up to him. I get sick to death of men who think that they can be rude to women, and expect us to just accept it because we're so conditioned to be 'nice'. Well fuck that shit. I am by nature a non-confrontational person and I choose my battles carefully. But I've had enough of it lately. If someone (and it's nearly always a man) really riles me I will say something.

You clearly didn't read my post properly so you can think its fishy all you want. I went to the bathroom and came back to find his feet on the seat I vacated when I went to the loo. That's all. Simple stuff really.
