Are your children going to school today?

It’s going to be 32 degrees where we are today, for the fourth day running.

If you’re in a heatwave area are your dc going to school? Is it closed? Our school are encouraging children to go in but giving the option to finish early.

Yabu - children are staying home
Yqnbu - children are going to school

I’ma teacher and yesterday my classroom was awful. You need to bear in mind the heat generally, then add 33 other bodies to the really tiny room that we have (with a low ceiling). That’s why schools are so much hotter than other buildings. Ours was built in the 70s so obv no air conditioning.

NC175 · 25/06/2026 09:27

Schools open here as usual. High school has relaxed the dress code. It’s only to be 29 here though so really not hot enough to be closing or finishing early!

NCTDN · 25/06/2026 09:27

Oh and children weren’t fit to learn anything!

Hollowvoice · 25/06/2026 09:37

School closed lunchtime Tuesday. Reopening tomorrow as far as we know now but given the forecast is only 1 degree lower then today I wouldn't be surprised to get a message later saying closed till Monday

Thechaseison71 · 25/06/2026 09:42

Dgs going in . Optional at his school

Yes that’s true about all the bodies, we have some glass roofing going on in our school too which I suspect makes things much worse!

Omg that is too funny. In Australia schools only talk of closing when it gets above 40. My kids have air con at school now but when they were in primary they didn’t. If we shut schools every time the temp went above 30 they would be closed for months.

Your schools are built to keep heat OUT though. Uk ones to keep heat IN

OMG too funny indeed 🙄

TheSoapyFrog · 25/06/2026 09:46

Both mine are going in. One school is letting the pupils wear their PE kits and the other is fully air conditioned.

SquigglePigs · 25/06/2026 09:49

We were at 34 yesterday and day before, 32 today and 35 tomorrow.

DD is going in but we've been given the option to collect at 1.30pm today and tomorrow so will be very happy to do that and get her home to cool down.

Lovechilli75 · 25/06/2026 09:51

DS in Y9 went in yesterday. The only concession school have made is no blazers but still in shirts & ties. He was miserable and said half the school weren’t there, we have said he can miss today. If they’d said PE kits and given them extra water breaks we would have sent him

Statsquestion1 · 25/06/2026 09:52

Yes, last day today and it’s only a half day.

Anonaonanon · 25/06/2026 09:55

Mine are home but I've no choice, the school is closed. It's 35°C here today.

Passingthrough123 · 25/06/2026 10:01

My primary teacher OH was rung out when he got home yesterday. Lots of the kids were picked at lunchtime but around seven were there until the end of the day, so he had to stay too. Classroom was pushing 40 degrees and the kids were just a floppy mess. Even though he kept urging them to drink more water, they were too hot and miserable to listen to sense. He stuck a film on in the end, but a couple fell asleep at their desks and for a horrible moment he thought they'd passed out. The stress of trying to keep them safe in intolerable conditions is horrible for the staff. Couldn't take them outside because there's barely any shade in the playground.

frozendaisy · 25/06/2026 10:05

Both in one definitely finishing early or probably finishing early we shall see

Larrythecatforpm · 25/06/2026 10:10

Yup both gone. One who struggles with the heat due to medical issues, the school agreed to put ice in his water bottle.

ThatLilacTiger · 25/06/2026 10:18

Ours has been closed yesterday and today and they let us collect early on Tuesday. We're right in the record breaking red zone though.

mindutopia · 25/06/2026 10:19

Yes, both mine are in school, secondary and primary.

I did keep my secondary one home yesterday, as she got a detention the day before waiting in the queue to fill up her water bottle and I was like bugger that! None of her friends went in, so I kept her home on the condition she was not allowed outside and she had to do next week’s homework.

My primary one had a voluntary early dismissal at 1:30pm. I collected him only because I felt sad thinking of all his friends going home and him being left behind. I don’t work so there’s no reason why I couldn’t.

I am collecting him at 1:30pm again today, but that’s really only because I need to be somewhere in the afternoon and it’s easier to get him early than plan my appointment around normal home time. It’s windy and cooler here today anyway.

catslovehairties · 25/06/2026 10:19

Schools open as usual here, though it's already 28 degrees and baking hot.

lordbaddingham · 25/06/2026 10:20

We are in West Kent and all the schools in our town seem to be open as usual with no option to keep at home. A lot of the kids were missing yesterday though.

Pancakeflipper · 25/06/2026 10:23

Yes... at secondary school.

Uniform rules relaxed.
School ensuring water bottles are refilled with water breaks.
Moving classes to the cooler classrooms.

I don't have air conditioning at home, and feel the school are doing all they can in these circumstances.

purpleme12 · 25/06/2026 10:25

No she is not

But that's only because they closed the school!

It's 29 degrees here today at it's hottest - and that's towards the end of the school day

I don't agree with it closing

GardensBooksTea · 25/06/2026 10:28

In school, with lots of water and in whatever combination of uniform/PE kit they're most comfy in. He was in a better state yesterday when he came home than I was after a day working at home as the house got so hot, so I think they're looking after them really well - and I'm very grateful.

Crunchymum · 25/06/2026 10:29

DC1 is in secondary and yes they are in as normal today. They have been allowed to take their tie off!
DC2 and DC3 school closed today (and yesterday). Although DC2 is on a school residential where the temps have been very high.

Wonder what the plan is tomorrow? Temperature looks warmer but weather warning drops to an Amber.

ThankYouNigel · 25/06/2026 10:30

No, absolutely not, not yesterday, today or tomorrow.

Edited

Very similar outcome here (barring PE kit, DC1 school is allowing no tie / top button open but not PE kit)

I was an utter wreck after a day WFH but he wondered in all cool and calm after most lessons being moved to rooms with air-conditioning.
