Are your children going to school today?

It’s going to be 32 degrees where we are today, for the fourth day running.

If you’re in a heatwave area are your dc going to school? Is it closed? Our school are encouraging children to go in but giving the option to finish early.

Yabu - children are staying home
Yqnbu - children are going to school

Going

DappledThings · 25/06/2026 07:50

Yes. Been no mention of it closing from school or parents.

ShetlandishMum · 25/06/2026 07:51

School open for working parents.

Rainallnight · 25/06/2026 07:51

Going, closed from 1pm. London

DancingThroughLife02 · 25/06/2026 07:52

We’re all in today but temperature in the classroom is already 27.5°C.

Yesterday got to well above 30 and we had a few faints - I’d recommend freezing their water bottles or adding lots of ice in the morning as they got really warm yesterday.

If they have small fans that also helps - we don’t have any here but I let some of my year 10s make paper fans quickly as the first thing in the lesson.

Dingledanglebinglebongle · 25/06/2026 07:53

Yep, lots of suncream, wearing sandals and hats.
My childrens school is quite modern and some areas have air conditioning, the younger classes are playing with water all week.

Crumpled86 · 25/06/2026 07:53

Yes but it is currently 17 degrees here. I appreciate it will feel warmer in class but I expect school to use fans, open windows, give the kids regular breaks and stagger their outside morning breaks if needed. We expect to see highs of 27 but that is around 3pm when school finishes.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 25/06/2026 07:53

Mine are going in. Schools are open, but have said we can keep home if we choose.

constantnc · 25/06/2026 07:53

Schools closed yesterday at 1..
Reopen Friday.
We're off to the locsl splash park 🤣

Supersleepysheepy · 25/06/2026 07:54

Ours isn't closing, but we've been told absences will be authorised. They aren't doing lessons, just activities and films etc while staying as cool as they can manage. I feel it's quite a sensible approach. There were only 8 in dd's class yesterday. Dh is home today anyway so we've said dd can stay home as she isn't missing any learning.

Lsquiggles · 25/06/2026 07:54

Going but finishing at 12.30. Very excited because it's her birthday!

TheCurious0range · 25/06/2026 07:55

Yes going in, not that they seem to be doing much other than water fights and 'computing' on rotation as the IT room has AC. It was 30 yesterday and it was hot but I walked to school and back to collect him and it was fine. It's only meant to be 24 today and then back up to 32 tomorrow but we'll see how it pans out

SleeplessInWherever · 25/06/2026 07:55

I’m about to sponge wash my autistic son and take him in.

He’s a tired clammy little thing but being at home would just wind him up.

MumofCandR · 25/06/2026 07:56

No changes to my school, kids are in as usual (secondary). They've barely relaxed the dress code to allow kids to wear the PE uniform with shorts. No aircon, amber warning up to 33 degrees.

CaptainCalm · 25/06/2026 07:56

Both schools open and pupils in. For my youngest they’ve adjusted the day slightly, no outside play at lunchtime, an earlier and longer morning break, no sports on the field but playing in a shaded garden instead.

PreachyPie · 25/06/2026 07:57

DS attends a special school, he has autism and severe learning disabilities. His school was closed yesterday and is closed again today.
I had to pick him up early on Tuesday as he was sick due to the heat. The school was boiling and the kids weren't coping...
I had already decided to keep him off Wednesday and Thursday, prior to him being sick. We had already been told we could keep our kids home if we felt it would be better for them.

Littlebitpsycho · 25/06/2026 07:59

Going, but school closing at 12

Oneandanotheroneistwo · 25/06/2026 07:59

Home - had an optional early finish the last two days but school fully closed today. Luckily our parents do a day of childcare for our youngest in Weds/Thurs so we haven't had to take time off.

Tomorrow still tbc but I'm expecting it to be closed again (I don't work Fridays so won't be an issue)

Gypsywomanx · 25/06/2026 08:00

They've closed most of the schools round here anyway but I wouldn't of sent them in, its going to be 37

Foxyloxy89 · 25/06/2026 08:00

My kids school are open as usual with no uniform concessions and no early finish. still doing full lessons in an old building with a flat roof and no air con. My son said yesterday was unbearable so am keeping them off today. It hit 38 here yesterday afternoon.

BraOffPjsOn · 25/06/2026 08:02

Mine are not going in. Their school is fully open all day.
DS1 was sent home unwell yesterday because of the heat so I’m just keeping them off today.
it’s due to be 31 here today.
The receptionist said yesterday that if he doesn’t vomit he can return tomorrow.

I just don’t agree with the inconsistency of some schools open/closed/optional - unless they have air con then surely they should At less be half day or optional?

ScaredButUnavoidable · 25/06/2026 08:04

Im keeping mine at home.

likimagee · 25/06/2026 08:04

Our high school is finishing early, seems a bit OTT to me at 32C, 32C doesn’t seem that unusual, they’ve never closed before. I’m not sure what has driven the decision whether it’s the mounting pressure or if the heat has compounded in the week to make the building hotter than it usually would be on a one off hot day. I wouldn’t dream of keeping them home if it’s open.

basingstokebluesfortwos · 25/06/2026 08:06

No mine been off since yesterday and probably won’t go back until Monday now as it’s hotter again tomorrow.

50NotFat · 25/06/2026 08:13

My DS school is closed.
