Last week or so.

1.man decides to dive head first into a low pool. Immediately paralysed. He’s paralysed , no insurance so go fund me obvs

  1. boy has insurance, insurance said no motorbikes, went on a motor bike, insurance withdrew. Go find me

man dives into pool , shallow end no insurance see above

man goes out gets wankered and gets in a fight, one punch hit and he’s in icu bit no insurance so he’s stuck there

How hard is it to book insurance when you book the holiday to open a second tab and order the insurance?

Just go to Google and type ‘gofud no insurance’ there are thousands.

I just don’t get it I have stage 4 cancer and I get insured by ‘insure with ‘

Why do you say " policies are so cheap"

That depends from person to person.

My son at 21 got a years worldwide ( except USA/Canada) for £25

A few years ago I was quoted £3 on a single trip

Both of those are cheap.

Ah mistyped 3k as in £3000 . If that's " cheap" you have serious money

So people should have known you meant 3k when you wrote £3.

£3 is cheap
3k isn’t

Of course people will respond to what you write not what you meant to write.

I smashed up my ankle while on holiday in Switzerland 1987 .It was an open compound fracture that has caused me continuous problems till this day .I was given antibiotics and my foot wrapped in a sterile towel and shoved into a room until they had established that I had valid travel insurance .Nobody gave a damn that I was in absolutely agony . Surgery lasted 8 hours and a hospital stay of two weeks all alone aged 22 years (I didn't tell my parents ) Accidents happen But don't put yourself or your kids through more heartache and trouble by not having insurance .It just isn't worth taking any risk .My insurance covered every single penny .The nightmare of it all has stayed with me though.

Ah ok, so you’d be fine if a gofundme was set up of someone had an accident in their country of residency, but since they were on holiday then that’s tough shit.

But at least in the UK people wouldn't need gofundme for their medical costs if it's their home ... it's going elsewhere without the necessary insurance that people are talking about here, and that applies whether it's a holiday, a working visit or anything else

Bad enough if it's to the EU where at least there are still reciprocal health provisions, but infinitely worse if it's elsewhere

Not entirely true, I’ve seen lots of gofundme pages on my Facebook where people are asking for donations because the NHS will give you essential treatment, but anything beyond is not feasible or takes a long time. Also GHIC doesn’t cover costs of transporting back to the UK which is typically what these donation pages are asking for.

ThestoriesIcouldtellyou · 26/06/2026 15:49

I know what you're saying about insurance but honestly I also think bad shit happens and sometimes I give some money like scaramanzia to ward off evil!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/06/2026 17:26

There have always been people who don't have insurance or who suffer accidents outside the policy. In the past families and friends may help out financially and people may have to go into debt. Locals would have organised a community fundraiser. Go fund me charges for contributions and is essentially begging strangers for money. It's the equivalent of putting up a poster begging for money in the days before the Internet. It's something a person with self respect would never do and very different from a community fundraiser.

Uricon2 · 26/06/2026 18:23

All the talk about 'mistakes'. Adding something up wrong is a mistake. Taking the wrong turning is a mistake. Diving off a hotel balcony while drunk or getting into fist fights, especially when you know you're in a country without the NHS, is something quite different.

Bellic · 26/06/2026 18:47

We do hear of loads of people on here becoming too ill to work or skint because their partner died, despite the fact life insurance if you have dependents ought to be mandatory and group income protection (keeps your salary being paid to you if you’re too ill to work) are really very common. We get great value for money out of mobile phone insurance too.

There are lots of situations where you could insure yourself and protect from a lot of heartache later if something bad does happen.

BuildbyNumbere · 26/06/2026 22:02

Yep it’s ridiculous but you don’t have to donate … I just scroll on past!

BuildbyNumbere · 26/06/2026 22:04

GaIadriel · 25/06/2026 06:17

What insurance policy covers you in the event of a drunken punch up? I'm pretty sure I haven't got a policy for nights out.

Then don’t get into a drunken punch up basically.

Createausername1970 · 26/06/2026 22:11

I also think it's madness to go away with no insurance, but insurance isn't a one-size-fits-all situation, you have to chose the insurance you need and abide by it's conditions. Accidents fueled by alcohol generally aren't covered.

But I can honestly say I do not encounter any GoFundMe requests. I don't go to that site as a general rule or go searching for requests. I have donated once to a local family, a family member died unexpectedly and they were struggling to pay for a funeral.

So I don't really understand why OP is annoyed by them, just don't go looking for them.

It said £3 so yes that is cheap. I responded to what you wrote not what you meant to write (which I could not have known.)

You can look around for far less than £3k (my nan managed that travelling as a pensioner snd definitely not quoted £3k for one trip) but if you cannot afford insurance you cannot afford to go away on a trip. It’s highly irresponsible to travel without it.

£3k on a single trip is bollocks - even my friend’s mum who is actively undergoing chemo and is looking to travel to the USA at the end of treatment isn’t being quoted that much.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · Yesterday 09:47

Agree OP - travel insurance is like £20.

It doesn’t annoy me as much as people who don’t have appropriate pet insurance and then set up gofundme pages so they can raise £12,000 for their dog’s chemo or whatever though.

Someone I know did this. Fundraiser shared on Facebook, all over the local sites begging for donations.

Dog died before it could get treatment and she pocketed £2500!

That’s outrageous that she kept the money! I just think asking for it is audacious.

I know! She claimed it was for costs associated with him dying - £120 for cremation? She needed a new car at the time as well, so that explains that

Well I did get quoted that much Someone else I know was quoted 5 k
How long was your Nan going away for?? I think a week in Spain or even a fortnight in the USA is cheaper than a longer trip tbh

And I had money I could play for treatment if needed so was willing to take the risk rather than 3k for something I didn't actually have at the time So I wouldn't have needed a go fund me

catgirl1976 · Yesterday 15:00

My dads travel insurance didn’t pay out when he ended up in hospital in Spain and had to be flown home on a medical flight because he didn’t declare his eczema.

The reason he was hospitalised was absolutely nothing to do with eczema.

Thechaseison71 · Yesterday 15:03

Actually just ran quotes through on the situation and trip I had a few years go
