Last week or so.

1.man decides to dive head first into a low pool. Immediately paralysed. He’s paralysed , no insurance so go fund me obvs

  1. boy has insurance, insurance said no motorbikes, went on a motor bike, insurance withdrew. Go find me

man dives into pool , shallow end no insurance see above

man goes out gets wankered and gets in a fight, one punch hit and he’s in icu bit no insurance so he’s stuck there

How hard is it to book insurance when you book the holiday to open a second tab and order the insurance?

Just go to Google and type ‘gofud no insurance’ there are thousands.

I just don’t get it I have stage 4 cancer and I get insured by ‘insure with ‘

I guess they found the money from somewhere. I used to work for the emergency medical assistance team. I organised a lot of private cases which involved repatriating people back home as they didn’t have insurance.

Who found the money or were people in debt fro the rest of their lives?

CarlaH · 25/06/2026 10:52

I would like to see insurers unable to weasel out of paying a claim because somebody has forgotten to tell them about every little thing they have seen a GP for. Fine if it turns out that the claim is related to that ailment but being able to throw out a claim which is completely unrelated should not be allowed.

DressOrSkirt · 25/06/2026 10:55

I would never pay towards a Go Fund Me for anything like this.
DH had an accident abroad and we didn't need to pay any medical expenses, I just called the insurance and let them know what hospital he was in and they sorted it all. I don't know if this varies by insurance plan or country.

Lovingapeacefulgarden · 25/06/2026 10:57

Its ridiculous and should be an automatic that nobody can go on holiday abroad or come to the UK without it. I have had to claim twice on insurance for holidays in 10 years once because my child had a nasty fall and needed stitches and once because my other child became seriously unwell 6 weeks before we went abroad and wasnt medically fit fly

Have zero sympathy.

My annual insurance with European cover is £35 Most of these people who end up with GFM pages - £20 for the trip

There was one who didn’t read the small print. Thought the policy covered 90 days. It meant 90 days max per year. Which turned out to be no more than 21 days per trip. Broke their leg 2 months into a 3 month holiday.

Yes also zero sympathy for the majority. There is the odd one that I would consider donating to such as pp who's son died by suicide in Australia - that is totally different.

I just took out an annual europe policy. I have numerous health problems including a major emergency surgery less than 12 months ago, and it still only cost me £120

Jellylasagnafortwo · 25/06/2026 10:58

I’m not even sure it’s an insurance thing. It’s stupidity in all of your examples (depending on the age of the boy, the parents should have said no).

The patient who wasn’t covered. Sometimes they found family members to help. I remember once case they used a credit card. But I would assume in most cases it was probably credit.

Grifters gonna grift

Agree completely
Part of holiday cost
No brainer

Our travel insurance is very expensive - but we still pay for it. However it doesnt cover you if you are waiting for a diagnosis and I had to push really hard to get a diagnosis before a long booked trip on one occasion. It's very annoying when it's most likely a very minor issue, that's why you are waiting ages, and would have no impact on you needing to claim for accidents. The Ombudsman does sometimes find against insurers who have looked for silly reasons not to pay - but not as often as I feel he should.

There are other causes I support, I dont generally have spare money to support people who made a bad choice. I will sometimes donate to one where the people had insurance but they were not covered but I dont look for them so only see the ones that get publicity because they are so awful.

ForRedPoet · 25/06/2026 11:10

Completely agree OP. It should be mandatory.

Nowisthetimeforicecream · 25/06/2026 11:13

A pretty high number of go-fund me seems to be for things that simple insurance would have covered.

"!I couldn't be arsed to insure my dog but now need to spend £3,000 on a treatment. "

"I was to stupid to understand home insurance so now I need money as my house burnt. "

etc etc.

Orangemintcream · 25/06/2026 11:16

Most of them are because people were too tight or did exactly what their insurance tells them not to do.

You do get the odd one where the insurance company have been utter bastards and used a loophole to not pay out though.

My insurance is over £100 for a weekend in Europe because I have a medical condition. I have to use a specialist company then double check then triple check I have declared all I need to.

BridgetJonesV2 · 25/06/2026 11:18

It's called Go Scam Me in our house. Sadly the internet has proved to be an invaluable meeting place for village idiots, and GFM is proof of it.

Jamesblonde2 · 25/06/2026 11:21

Yes the begging needs to stop. It’s embarrassing.

Lararoft · 25/06/2026 11:23

I have 2 disabilities & also had to declare a couple of other conditions - my insurance for a ten day holiday to Greece this year was £189!! Through a specialist insurer. But i wouldn’t have risked going without it.

user5683926547 · 25/06/2026 11:27

It should be compulsory. My friends parents are mid 80’s, they go off on several holidays a year with no insurance and ignore what will happen if one of their medical conditions flare up while they are away. Well, i know what they think - my DF will sort it out for them. I tell her to turn her phone off while they are travelling!

I'm afraid I regard GoFundMe as begging.

I have monthly standing orders for donations to recognised charities but I would never give money to any one on GoFundMe.

It IS begging.

In Zanzibar it is compulsory to buy insurance even if you already have insurance.
It costs $44 and is valid for 92 days.
They check you have it when you arrive.

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 25/06/2026 12:52

When people are going through probably one of the worst experiences of their life, I’ll happily chuck in a tenner to lighten the burden whilst being extremely grateful it wasn’t me or my family.

Not sure why you'd be "afraid" of regarding it this way when begging is precisely what it is

I suppose the difference is that with most beggars you can give to organisations which support whatever cause it is instead, but I'm not sure there's an anti stupidity cause ...

But if we all do this there is no incentive for people to actually take charge of their own lives.

Yanbu it amazes me that people will pay £1000s for a holiday but don’t pay the £50 for insurance.

Our last holiday was £62 for our whole family tp be insured and I have a medical condition that makes it a bit more.

What about the £500 holiday with £3k insurance scenerio
