Last week or so.

1.man decides to dive head first into a low pool. Immediately paralysed. He’s paralysed , no insurance so go fund me obvs

  1. boy has insurance, insurance said no motorbikes, went on a motor bike, insurance withdrew. Go find me

man dives into pool , shallow end no insurance see above

man goes out gets wankered and gets in a fight, one punch hit and he’s in icu bit no insurance so he’s stuck there

How hard is it to book insurance when you book the holiday to open a second tab and order the insurance?

Just go to Google and type ‘gofud no insurance’ there are thousands.

I just don’t get it I have stage 4 cancer and I get insured by ‘insure with ‘

If you go back to 2011 you’ll find my threads about giving birth to my son prematurely in the US. It’s a cautionary tale about travelling while pregnant (lots of people do it with no issues - I was unlucky) but what many people don’t realise is the birth and baby’s after-care are generally not covered by insurance. Fortunately for me he was born an American citizen and qualified for Medicare. My insurance company and the hospital covered the rest of the bill which amounted to £250000 (I was there for 7 weeks).

So I always, always advise pregnant women to take out insurance, get a covering letter from your GP, and check exactly what is covered.

bumblebee3122 · 27/06/2026 20:55

I have numerous health conditions. Travel insurance for me alone is almost £1k. So you know what, we don't go abroad. It's as simple as that. I'm not taking the risk.

Anotherdayanotherscan · 27/06/2026 21:00

There will always be outlying cases but it won't be the majority. If you go away you should prove insurance, same as buying a car.

I'm with OP, stage four cancer and still able to get fully comp insurance for me and whole family for under £200. (Insurance with), it's more about taking responsibility for your own actions, and recognise that nanny isn't going to scrape your ass off the floor like the NHS do in the UK.

To whee and for how long are you getting that kind of quote?

JHound · 29/06/2026 10:29

Thechaseison71 · 27/06/2026 14:57

Well I did get quoted that much Someone else I know was quoted 5 k
How long was your Nan going away for?? I think a week in Spain or even a fortnight in the USA is cheaper than a longer trip tbh

And I had money I could play for treatment if needed so was willing to take the risk rather than 3k for something I didn't actually have at the time So I wouldn't have needed a go fund me

You had money to pay for treatment if needed but not 3k for insurance (which you were being scammed over?)

Treatment is many multiples more than 3k.

Yeah it may have been. But I was willing to take the risk.
And it depends on what treatment as to the cost. I wouldn't be paying 3 k for treatment for nasty food poisoning for exaple. Even a broken leg is less

Simple fracture: 1,000–5,000 THB (£20–£120)
Surgery case: 30,000–100,000 THB (£650–£2,200)

Tell me why I should be charged 3k for something I didn't actually have,?

Well you don’t need to pay £3k. You can stay home. But people who choose not to pay and travel are idiots. Insurance doesn’t just cover medical costs.

But medical fees for treatment far exceed 3k so to say you have money for medical treatment but not insurance makes no sense.

Because the 3k would be wasted as there was nothing wrong with me And where are you getting these medical fees that are so much higher. And why should I have to stay at home when there's fuck all wrong with me?

I've already quoted costs for broken leg, even with surgery that's under the 3k. Called self insuring isn't it.

And what non medical costs is it covering? Flight delay? Well cheaper to buy another id I missed it. Lost luggage? Well I have a 7kg backpack and could replace contents including bag for under £400. I'm struggling to think what else tbh.

Seeing as I'm not setting up a go fund me then I'm not sure why you are pearl clutching at me

If you eg got hit by a car, had life changing injuries and needed months in hospital and/or a Medevac flight home, the cost would potentially be £10s-100s of thousands.

So is sell the house then wouldn't I. I don't think you could raise that kind of money on a GFM anyway

It's kind of irrelevant these days as no getting more reasonable quotes again years after the cancer opi don't understand this " nedivac flight home anyway. Why the hell would I want to go back to the UK?

Teenytinydot · 29/06/2026 15:25

Honestly I am not going to begrudge someone trying to raise funds because they are paralysed!

Jesus OP!

You could just do a general post reminding people to get travel insurance

Quooth · 29/06/2026 15:29

My travel insurance costs nearly as much as the holiday due to pre-existing conditions.
I don't buy it in case of lost luggage or minor ailments but for catastrophic events.
I don't insure my washing machine because I can cover the cost of replacement but I couldn't cover the cost of ICU / repatriation from abroad.

On the subject of hospitals demanding money pending insurance. I was stung by that once. Hospiten in Tenerife refused to remove a cannula and discharge my niece until I paid £800. I got it back from the insurance eventually but because of this I would always try to use the local state medical facilities with a GHIC if possible.

BlueFahrenheit · 29/06/2026 15:40

I have never heard of this trend. Needless to say, I would not bother even clicking it.

I have better things to be concerned with.

OK, so these injuries leave you quadraplegic with a brain injury. You could still live for years. Unless you live in a house worth millions and can arrange to sell it to fund your own long term medical and care needs, there's a problem, because eg the Thai state won't be paying.

I know this is an extreme scenario but these things do happen.

Well if I had all that I'd hope my advance directive would've kicked in and I wouldn't have had treatment to keep me alive

Besides what could they actually DO to get money if I didn't have it. Not treat me and I'd die? Well I wouldn't want to be living with those kinds of injuries whether it's a week or any years

CarbootJunction · 29/06/2026 15:59

My in-laws are off to Spain at the weekend for a fortnight. They are in their 80s and have very serious medical conditions, with lots of medications, but don't declare any of it to the insurance company 'because it's too expensive'.
There is no way I'm launching a GFM if anything bad happens.

Apparently some countries will only accept the validity of an advance directive if it has been translated into the language of the country you're in and legally notarised. Sorry if you knew that but I certainly didn't.

Yes I did know that thanks. It's a subject I've researched in depth after the struggle to get my mums recognised

That's absolutely mad. It wouldn't even cost as much as they think. DH and I have multiple medical conditions and an annual policy is around £500.
Pointless to bother with any insurance if you don't declare everything.
