If you kept your kid of school

I've seen all over social media today people who have kept their kids of school because of the heat but then are out in the garden. Surely if your so concerned about the heat they would be inside. My neighbours a couple of doors down are the same the kids have been out all day in the garden. How is this safer and cooler then being in school. Makes no sense

You think outside is hotter than a classroom with 32ish people?

I think being out in the heat of the day is more dangerous then being inside yes

A classroom full of 30 kids with no air conditioning is easily around 5 degrees hotter than outside at least. Of course the garden with a bit of shade, constant drinks, fresh air and if you’ve got one- a nice paddling pool would be preferable.

MrsDroughtFire · 24/06/2026 19:31

Mine were sent home at 1.15pm when it was full sun and 35 degrees. I gave them an ice lolly and put suncream and UV swimwear on , then I let them outside in the shade to play with water.

Once they were soaked and cool they came in and watched a film.

Upstairs in my house is now hotter than outside (it is 33 outside).

Hottiiieee · 24/06/2026 19:31

Thirty odd children in a room is going to be a lot hotter than outside with access to shade, paddling pool, ice lollies etcIt really isn’t that hard to work out !

Edited

I have no issue of people keeping their kids of school if they are genuinely concerned but I would assume that if you was really concerned about the heat you would be inside with the curtains closed and the fans going not running around the garden

There aren’t 30 other kids at home so you can properly keep an eye to make sure they’ve sun creamed properly and drink enough water. Also, they can do as much or as little as they feel up to whereas at school they have to follow the routine. So yes they could play in the garden but when they’re flagging they can come in and chill immediately, not have to stay out 10 more minutes because it’s still break then attempt do a phonics lesson where its unlikely it’ll sink in anyway as they’re all hot and bothered.

I didn’t keep mine home, had to go to work, but I totally get why you would if you’re a SAHP and have a garden!

Needmorelego · 24/06/2026 19:33

At home they'll have access to drinks whenever they want, the choice to be in the cool whenever they want and they can wear as little clothes as they want.

NuffSaidSam · 24/06/2026 19:34

Whether inside or outside is hotter will depend on your house/garden design, where the sun is etc.

My house is currently about ten degrees cooler than it is outside. This morning, at work, it was cooler outside in the shade (nice breeze blowing) than in the living area/kids play area.

WorkCleanRepeat · 24/06/2026 19:34

My kids school closed today, we were also sent home from the office to work for 2 days.

My house is definitely a lot warmer than the office was and my kids say its a lot warmer than their school was too.

frozendaisy · 24/06/2026 19:35

I am sure many adults pulled a sickie today, blazing hot sunshine, football was on last night.

Maybe some of them can't afford a holiday this year and a bit of water play in the garden is going to be as good as it gets?

You can't police the world!

Why? It was cooler, and less humid, on the decking next to the house than it was in the house itself.

Cornishmumofone · 24/06/2026 19:44

DD’s school closed early today. Her friend’s mum collected her and the two girls played in a paddling pool in the shade. That has to be preferable to being in a stuffy classroom.

I'd assume if you're really concerned you'd ensure your kid wasn't stuck in a classroom with 30 other kids generating heat so that the temperature is 5 degrees above the general temperature.

Your assumption is that it's hotter in the garden. Your assumption is incorrect.

Abcdgse · 24/06/2026 19:50

I kept my kids off. We have a large deep pool. So they can keep cool in the water. We have fans inside keeping us cool. Fluids when ever they want.

Schools have 30 children per class. Can't have access to fluids freely. Can't go to the toilet freely.

My sister is a TA and adults were getting ill from the heat

They wouldn't be outside even if the outside temp was lower than the room temperature in your house and the humidity was lower outside than in? Why?

I expect many people keeping their kids off want them to be where it is cooler and that might be outside in the garden. my garden was definitely cooler than my house earlier today- the house has been like a sauna.

Jk987 · 24/06/2026 21:13

Because cold paddling pools and shade I’d imagine.

“Some of us have to work”

Aw bless your little cotton socks.

i don’t think what anyone else does with their children is any of your business. And having a problem that is unhinged

Allswellthatendswelll · 24/06/2026 21:25

We weren't able to be in the classroom after 10.30am and took the kids to the shade and then a cooler part of the school. Our garden is south facing so my kids don't go out in it until after 5pm but went to a friend's shaded garden. You sound joyless OP.

Do you know what unhinged means?

Don’t be ridiculous.

it isn’t just about staying cool, it’s about coping with the heat.

a classroom full of kids in a room likely with no AC is a hard ask for a kid of any age. Keeping them off means they can go in and out as they like, relax and wear whatever they want, have a nap if needed, cool off in a paddling pool ETC

your post is daft.
