If you kept your kid of school

I've seen all over social media today people who have kept their kids of school because of the heat but then are out in the garden. Surely if your so concerned about the heat they would be inside. My neighbours a couple of doors down are the same the kids have been out all day in the garden. How is this safer and cooler then being in school. Makes no sense

Mine were outside all the day but in the pool in the shade. I assure you they kept cool this way :-)

“Some of us have to work”

Aw bless your little cotton socks.

i don’t think what anyone else does with their children is any of your business. And having a problem that is unhinged

Seemingly your "straight talking" involves rudeness to those whose opinions differ from yours.

Do you know what unhinged means?

Take no notice. She's just incredibly rude.

I let my 14 yr old son stay home - he went to the beach! Why on earth would I keep him indoors. He came home on tuesday literally red in the face and looking absolutely exhausted.

I was proved right when they shut his school at lunchtime anyway!

the kids all went straight down to the beach.

Dingledanglebinglebongle · 24/06/2026 22:07

Both my attended school as normal. Got told to bring a towel, sandals and extra suncream, DD spent all day yesterday and today playing with water (Year R) and DS Year 2 did a bunch of science experiments involving water.

They both had blast. Me and DP sat at home stuck to our sofa most of the day. I’m glad they were in school

waterrat · 24/06/2026 22:07

We have the most ridiculous attitude to school in this country that it is literally the only thing that matters - that parents can never make a sensible decision about their own child. That it is not possible that an 8 year old - or a 10 year old - or a 13 year old might genuinely be better off and have a more healthy happy day lying under a tree in the park or their garden than in a sweltering room of 32 kids being forced to do phonics while they feel sick with heat.

But this is the point im making how can parents say the reason they're keeping their kids of school is because their scared of the dangers of the weather then let their kid spend the day on the beach its like my neighbours its a South facing garden no shade. If parents just want their kids to be off to enjoy the weather that's fine but say that don't make a big fuss about being scared for their kids health and how dangerous this weather is.

My DDs class WhatsApp is full of dramatic parents at the moment. Moaning the school hasn’t closed. Just keep your kids off school then, make the decision yourself. Everyone is making such a drama. Don’t want your child to be in school, just don’t send them.

There were 8 parents queued up outside our school gate yesterday complaining about the heat and questioning how the school would help students, despite the detailed post on the school website and communication app giving exactly that information. People just don’t use common sense these days.

I kept my child off because he came home with symptoms of heatstroke on Tuesday. I’d much rather he’s at home where I can make sure he’s drinking and has access to cold baths etc. If I had a garden then I’d definitely be out there with some shade rather than inside a hot flat. Judging by the state that he came home from school I’m sure a garden is still much cooler than his classroom.

Floppyearedlab · 24/06/2026 22:37

Our school is allowing home clothes for the rest of the week. Some lessons have taken place under the trees on the school field. A class water fight has been arranged for PE tomorrow. DS is assembling his water pistol as we speak.

No closures.

Another one picking on the OP's spelling without commenting on the thread. Do you feel better now? People deal with the heat in different ways. People also have different levels of literacy.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 24/06/2026 22:44

I am keeping DS off tomorrow. He won’t change from his usual uniform although he’s allowed during the hot weather. He’s come out of school bright purple, we might sit on the garden at some point.

Nasty.

NoSausage · 24/06/2026 22:50

They've kept them off either because they're worried about them coping as one of 30 kids, rather than being under direct supervision with constant access to cold drinks, shade and suitable clothing, with a house thats cooled overnight with windows open, or maybe they felt the kids wouldn't be able to concentrate.

Or maybe they just thought, stuff it, its bloody hot and something they might fondly remember from childhood, a bit like we did the odd snow day.

Its not your education, is it? How does it affect you?

People go on summer holidays all the time. You can't tell me you think people fly to DisneyWorld to stay in the hotel room all day.

What is wrong with you?
Very rude, you and others on the thread. You feeling better now Hun??
OP has a valid point. All this handwringing about the heat, while visiting the beach, granted classrooms are like an oven, I’ll be keeping DS in most of tomorrow, short visits to the shop or sitting in the garden.

When you have older kids they are not going to be spending the day playing with water. They will be in a hot classroom doing geography etc. Your kids won't be little forever, it's not just about younger ones doing water play

weareallcats · 24/06/2026 23:04

My dc are home educated, so a moot point in a way, but we spent the early morning outside and then the hottest part of the day indoors in the cooler side of the house, then went back out again in the evening. I’m still outside now in the dark, as it’s much cooler than the house! Kids go out and play in the snow when schools are shut for weather. That said, I do think there are some people about who don’t realise how dangerous the heat can be - I’ve seen people running and out with their dogs during the hottest part of the day (I was in my air conditioned car), which I think is bonkers.

BraOffPjsOn · 24/06/2026 23:08

UABU - my children went to school today and we got called to collect eldest as he had heatstroke and has been really unwell!
DH went to collect and asked for youngest too and the receptionist said that would be unauthorised and she’d have to check with the head! I can’t see how dragging eldest back out to collect him a couple of hours later would have been good.
Youngest went straight in the paddling pool and had a great time. Eldest flopped on the sofa with ice packs and calpol and still felt ill at bedtime.

Also, I’m a teacher and I can’t believe people can’t put themselves in the children’s shoes - 30 in a hot, classroom which has no way to cool down. It is unbearable and the job at the moment is about trying to keep them safe rather than learning.

I had no choice some of us have to go to work but if I had kept my kids of they wouldn't be outside

That's a shame for your children, but you can't expect everybody to make the same bad choices.

Anyahyacinth · 24/06/2026 23:17

I do see what OP is saying going outside ..takes no account of UV dangers . Playing in water is one of the ways to acquire severe heat effects ..because it is hard to discern the radiation effects of the sun..the damage that the staying at home was trying to avoid has in effect been risked

Kickinthenostalgia · 24/06/2026 23:17

My daughters friends came over today when they finished at 12.30 and some different ones are coming tomorrow because the school is closed, and guess what, they were keeping cool in a nice big pool, not shoved into a tiny box made out of glass with 30 other kids. This will also be something they remember in years to come. Who can even focus when you’re over heated… before I get the uv police on my case, I have a gazebo over the pool currently so they didn’t burn 😁

AirportParking · 25/06/2026 06:48

Both my children's schools are on half days at the moment. I'm a primary school teacher and my school is not- the classrooms were 40 degrees inside yesterday!

My yr6 did nothing but colouring in yesterday and begged me to let him stay home today (most of his friends are also out at secondary induction days this week).

I'm sending him in because I don't want him at home all day and school for a few hours will break his day up. However, if it was an option I would keep my children both at home in the pool. There is nothing going on at school that is worth turning up for.
