To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

Ha, exactly. I am also very dubious of exactly how well people remember an event 50 years on. People don't even remember aspects of COVID accurately.

I remember it well. It was worse then than it is now. We had the heat and a drought. London only had to deal with a hosepipe ban but parts of the country had it much worse, hose pipe bans and water rationing! I have a recollection of the news showing standpipes being used in some areas.

dadtoateen · 24/06/2026 19:37

Get on with what?? Life? General living? Work? Home life?

yes we should absolutely carry on, world cannot stop just cause it’s got warm….

drink plenty of water, dress accordingly etc.

what a nanny state we live in nowadays….

It would be great if we could make our country better equipped to deal with the heat. We haven’t tho (yet, maybe one day 😂), so yeah we do need to just get on with it really. Vulnerable people, no I wouldn’t think or say just get on with it, as it’s a hell of a lot harder for them to do so. But people like me…? Yes just crack on. Today was uncomfortable at times but nothing horrendous and what difference would moaning and not “getting on with it” make. What does that even look like like? Just laying in bed and crying about being too hot?

What a strange post - to ignore my points about campaigning and unionising and imagine that the only alternative to 'just getting on with it' is to lay in bed and cry

I can’t imagine any government forking out £5 billion to install air conditioning in every classroom in the country, let alone pay the electricity bills needed to turn them on!

then they will have to put up with schools closing They cant have it both ways. or they will wait for someone to die and then have something similar to Awaabs Law. Its the British way!

Yep, I expect some schools will close a bit early a couple of days a year, Ofsted will bitch about it, the press will stir up outrage about lazy teachers and not a lot of work will get done, whilst whoever is Ed Sec will film themselves saying how important attendance is. Far cheaper than billions spent on A/C units.

Potentially. But I can try and find a window

Yes, imagine thinking that something that inconveniences literally everyone and kills or hospitalises others might be something with which the government wants to concern themselves

which is what they should have been doing instead of pratting about with the leadership this week

I won't be derailing this thread by discussing how I think it should be funded.

What is the point of a call to action if you don't discuss how solutions can be funded?

frozendaisy · 24/06/2026 19:46

Once the heatwave is over

There will be data, actual real data, on hospital admissions, deaths, loss of productivity, water shortages, travel disruption etc.

This will be presented to the the relevant government departments and reported in the press, you might have to look for it if you are interested, and then suggestions made for long term strategy for future heatwaves.
And all of this will be ignored because it will be a lot of investment needed for no noticeably immediate gain.

The public hate experts nowadays anyway.

So yes we just have to get on with it.

Thistooshallpsss · 24/06/2026 19:47

I think a huge opportunity was missed in summer 2020 when it became clear Covid was airborne and proper air con that ventilated and kept the air clean would have been a real capital investment for schools making the environment safer more hygienic and better for children’s health and learning. It could still happen it needs a long view being taken instead of the instant gratification we have fallen into politically now.

They might at a push introduce a high temp maximum for working conditions.

Front line staff excluded.

At best

And outdoor workers like roofers, road maintenance etc. Maybe additional legislation about breaks, working hours, air conditioned vehicles or something?

For a few days every half century, I think that we should just get on with it rather than spaff hundreds of billions adapting infrastructure and working practices.

Heard of climate change?

I think this will be it because once parents have their children out of school, other issues become 'more' important. Teacher - especially of those of us who are into nearly 3 decades - are still here. We want buildings fit for purpose for our own children and their children.

The only summer I have know it like this was 2022. We had one day but his is a week.

Im in a block of four flats In the summer of 2020 we had our roof replaced. The roofers didnt work in the last week of July because it was too hot. Some companies are sensible.

People need to spend to be prepared.

A friend of mine joked about booking a travel lodge because it has air con for this week. £400 she said. I said she should but that towards air con/window shutters something that will help year after year.

Places of work should also install and take measures to cool work places down and relax uniforms in places they can. Smart chinos and a polo is perfectly fine for an office don’t need to be suited and booted. WFH again if possible stops the commute if staff want to and will be more comfortable.

Stop ripping out all the trees from school fields keep them and do outside learning, covered areas for outside learning good in warm but wet days also when you can be in and out. Again relax uniforms polos and shorts. Longer breaks. Let the kids have a water fight on the field at lunch fuck it.

In places where you can again you could change hours so things start earlier a long break and then open later on again.

But we don’t we just want to moan and prey the fairies will fix things because it’s only 5 days a year.

Same goes for snow.

Nowisthetimeforicecream · 24/06/2026 19:55

I'm with you. Everyone should just stop getting on with it and stay at home. That would definitely work.

Many of the things you suggested would require government legislation

Really it should only require common sense. I know that’s sadly lacking however.
