AIBU to question Thomas Partey playing despite serious criminal charges?

Dingledanglebinglebongle · 23/06/2026 22:37

Why is it not more well known that Thomas Partey, playing for Ghana against England tonight has been charged with 4 counts of rape, 1 count of sexual assault, other reports say 7 counts of rape.

He was banned from entering Canada.

Why is this man allowed to not only be in the World Cup up but allowed to enter other countries?

I think it is pretty well known. And he’s not the only player playing who is facing charges - Hakimi, for example.

But they’ve been charged, not found guilty. There’s real risks with making people sit out big events because they’ve been charged, if they’re then found innocent. It always reminds me of Michael Le Vell… that said, there’s been a lot of leakage in the Partey case and you’d hope he’d be dropped for that reason.

Then again, the only reason Utd exiled Greenwood was because public opinion was so strong. They’d have welcomed him back otherwise… football does not cover itself in moral glory.

Let's also not forget the disgusting piece of shit Ched Evans, who continued to play.

It is well known, by millions of people who follow football. And the news. He's also not been found guilty of any crime, so why should be be stopped from working?

murasaki · 23/06/2026 23:16

Hakimi was charged officially after it started, but yes, Partey should be suspended until it is sorted in a court.

He was actually banned from Canada not due to the nature of the charges but because he said no charges, arrests or convictions on his visa form, so lied.

murasaki · 23/06/2026 23:16

Trump obviously has no issue with potential sex offenders so his US visa was no issue....

Ah I wondered because they mentioned something about it before the match but I didn’t catch it.

How is he allowed in to the USA then?!

Crazy. Even on an Esta you have to declare certain arrests

You know being charged doesn't mean he's guilty? It means there's a case to take to court.

Fortunately civilised countries believe in innocent until proven guilty. The UK still believe in that and so does Ghana.

True, but quite often you're suspended from your job on full pay....

Who never was found guilty. I hate that he wasn't but surely we don't want to live in a world where the court verdicts don't count for anything and football or any other organisation takes the law into its own hands?

This player is innocent until proven guilty. Hopefully the courts will do a better job than they did on Evans, but as it stands he hasn't been convicted.

Evans was found guilty and sentenced to 5 yrs He was allowed to appeal and was aquitted after a retrial.

FrothyCothy · 23/06/2026 23:50

Evans was found guilty at his first trial, he subsequently successfully appealed.

Yes, so is not guilty.

Indeed. But many football fans made their feelings on the matter quite clear when his team rocked up to play them. As fans have to Partey and Hakimi.

I think Evans' situation is different because, by his own admission he did some appalling things. The court (eventually) decoded thar didn't amount to rape, but IMO it's srill not something clubs should tolerate from their players.

No evufence has yet been heard about the Ghanian player.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/06/2026 00:22

It’s up to Ghana if they play him I guess.

It’s up to the host nations if they let him in, although well done to Canada for not (interestingly this is no issue for the US, despite all the other people they haven’t let in for no good reason).

And the England player who refused to shake his hand? Our first Muslim player. Almost as if the way the far right has been portraying ordinary Muslims in the Uk is nonsense 🤔

Ched Evans was found innocent. He lost his career and managed to come back only at a low level.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/06/2026 00:47

Can everyone stop saying ‘found innocent’. That’s not what people are found. They are found to be not guilty and the bar is beyond a reasonable doubt.

Which means a shit load of them are, in fact, rapists. And the vast majority of men charged with rape are rapists. It’s just exceptionally hard to get convictions. For numerous reasons.

Now if I was on a jury, it would be my duty to consider the plaintiff innocent until proven guilty. But in real life, we know men accused, arrested and charged are banged to rights.

Darragon · 24/06/2026 01:02

And yet a teacher or a nurse or anyone else doing a normal role would not still be in a job. Footballers have so much more influence and of course incel and rape culture makes boys think they can grow up to be untouchable because all their idols are.

I disagree that footballers have more influence than teachers or nurses
Of course they don't.

Decacaffeinatednow · 24/06/2026 11:51

Arsenal had no issues with playing him even when allegations were made about him.

If it was at the first trial that he was found not guilty I would agree. But Ched Evans had a guilty verdict overturned, and it is widely accepted that he should not have been found guilty in the first place so ‘found innocent’ is appropriate I think.

I do agree though that found innocent is not the right term in most cases because it is a lack of evidence that is the reason lots of rapists get off and are found not guilty. But some of the accused actually are innocent and where a verdict like this was overturned based on evidence I don’t think that we should be putting Ched Evans into the same category as those who got away with it due to lack of evidence

WhenTheDustSettles · 24/06/2026 14:48

Scott Mills will be asking this question with bells on.

He may have been found innocent.
But the best that can be said about him is that he turned the taxi that he was in around so that he could go and cheat on his partner, with a woman that his mate had just picked up at a club and then left via the fire exit.

So "innocent" possibly, Scum definately.
