To feel really worried about climate change in this heatwave

Fulbe · 23/06/2026 22:28

This heatwave has been caused by climate change but there seems to be hardly any discussion about this at all. It seems that people are focused so much on getting air con or massive paddling/ swimming pools without thinking how that might be actually contributing to the problem. People outside the school gates idling their engines to keep their air con turned on whilst creating more pollution.

I think I remember reading somewhere that we've released 6 million years' worth of CO2 in the past 150 years. Something needs to stop but consumption and car use seem to be increasing.

Am I the only one to be concerned about this and that we're just slipping into a future of more dangerous heatwaves?

This is such a reductive argument. If 85% of what she does is good for the planet then she is a good example. Pointing to one or two things which are not carbon efficient, in order to negate all the other things she (or anyone else) does, shows that you are just looking for an excuse not to do anything.

It also isn’t as simple as saying “she flies” Does she choose an airline which uses sustainable air fuel? One that is meeting net zero targets? For example, Delta has committed $1bn over ten years in sustainability initiatives, which includes halving its emissions by 50% and investing in research for sustainable travel.

The answer to climate change isn’t for us all to revert to the dark ages, it’s about reducing our impact to a level the planet can sustain.

Greta Thunberg is the face of climate change. She should practice what she preaches!!!

I laughed out loud at taxing those who fly a lot. We've been on multiple multiple foreign holidays this year and will be going on another one in July.

Errrr then you are literally the problem.

Those countries do. We can do more.

1% of emissions. Destroying and hurting our industry.

Why? People WANT to for a lot of reasons.

Well i’m thinking more of immigration for workforce needs for example.

Half the people who have treated me in the NHS or the people that care for my elderly relative in a home will have travelled overseas.

I worry too. Although my dad told me tonight about a summer in the 70’s when it was scorching hot and didn’t rain from May- September. He said he’d worked all summer long, then went to Cornwall on holiday and it started to rain. My mum went on to say it was an awful winter, and once it started raining it literally never stopped for months. Made me feel a little better.

yup Dennis Howell was appointed Minister for Drought in late august of that year and shortly afterwards it started to rain heavily all over the UK

Pineapplewhip · 24/06/2026 11:19

My son is 12 and hes genuinely worried. Hes not an anxious child, but he's told me several times he's worried the sun is just too hot now and in his lifetime the world's going to burn!

Cheerful little bugger.

What can we do if India, china USA and Russia don't?

China is planting more trees than any other country.

minipie · 24/06/2026 11:19

I agree with a PP that the one glimmer of hope is the rapidly declining birth rate.

Telling people to consume less voluntarily is wildly optimistic. Small voluntary changes by relatively few people in privileged countries are a drop in the ocean. (That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try, but let’s be realistic about the impact).

Governments aren’t going to put heavy restrictions on energy and resource consumption as it’s unpopular and harms the domestic economy. Other countries with fewer restrictions will just step into the gap instead.

What we really really need as a planet is far fewer people. Luckily it is going in that direction, at least at the moment.

Flights would have gone ahead regardless. We wanted to go see Europe. DS, DD, DH and I all have our travel plans. The world exists, should we not go see it.

The Met office cannot predict next week's weather so how the heck do they know what will happen 30 years from now?
Us humans have caused climate issues, there is no doubt about that but the planets weather patterns have constantly changed and always will continue to change even without human input.

Of course the earth’s climate has changed over time and will continue to do so. But that is largely irrelevant to the situation we are in now. The question isn’t will the climate continue to change, it’s will our impact change the climate so significantly, it becomes dangerous to the planet. Right now the answer is yes.

54% of their electricity is from coal

wishingonastar101 · 24/06/2026 11:23

We have friends in Asia and the middle classes drive everywhere and have their aircon on all the time - even when they are out so as the house is cool when they get back. This will be what happens in the uk. The wealthy will be able to keep cool and the poor will die.

Flamingojune · 24/06/2026 11:23

Does it take more energy to heat up cool parts of the world than cool down hot parts if the world?

If the demand for flights reduced, the amount of flights scheduled would reduce.

Airlines aren't going to fly around Europe with just 3 people on board 😆

I feel the same about David Attenborough. Spent 50+ years flying around the World with a film crew and now he's on my case about climate change. Chris Packham too. Get tae fuck.

I don't actually think it is difficult to know what do on an individual level.

People are inherently selfish and will typically only make changes if they can see some benefit to themselves in doing so. An example is solar panels and batteries. They make a massive difference but most people won't do it unless they can see a benefit in terms of a reduction in their bills. Practically every potential change carries that trade off and most people won't make a change that costs them anything more than a negligible amount of money/time/discomfort.

We can do an awful lot on a personal level and whilst one person making a change make very little difference, millions of us making that change makes a big difference. We need to buy local, buy seasonal, reduce what we consume in general and make sensible choices about things that damage the world around us.

We can change the behaviours of the big corporates by not buying what they are selling. Ultimately they change if customers demand it - but we don't currently demand it.

Because we don’t want to ruin British companies and collapse the economy. This has to be done slowly.
And the biggest hypocrites are The Stop Oil Brigade. Living a life of privilege and worse than everyone else….

People won’t give up things they want to do. We are all doomed because we are fundamentally selfish beings, so don’t want to suffer not going abroad or reducing our consumption for the greater good.

The planet doesn’t matter to most people. WE don’t want to drastically change our lifestyle as that wouldn’t be a nice life to live.

It would if the government didn't keep topping people up with cost of living payments/benefit increases.

cocoadreams · 24/06/2026 11:30

“The actions of every single one of us have drought us to this point” some one said upthread. Yes, to an extent , in so far as we purchase stuff. But even if every single person in the UK stopped eating meat, stopped flying , stopped driving, stopped procreating and stopped heating their homes it would make fuck all
difference to the state of the planet. Faced with the extinction of the human race, with nothing at all I can do to influence it, I will make my choices as best I can.

sausageth · 24/06/2026 11:31

I understand the concerns. I really don't think there's much we can do though.

Regarding the heat, in Florida in the summer it's a good 36-37 degrees daily, and humid. People live there happily, it's just a different way of living. Air conditioning everywhere, plus I do think your body does adapt.

This doesn't help the climate change situation of course.

@lovecotswoldsliving I agree with you about The Stop Oil Brigade!!! They really are hypocritical menaces!!!

flapjackfairy · 24/06/2026 11:40

the problem is that no.matter what we do.on an individual level the mega rich elite are merrily grabbing as many resources as they can hoard whilst also destroying the planet by blowing up anything they feel like. How much damage to.the climate have all those bombs and missiles done ? And how much of the world's energy and resourses will be required to rebuild it all ?
And who will get even richer doing the rebuilding ?

Thalafor · 24/06/2026 11:40

If you have business to-do in Singapore how are you supposed to go there?
