To feel really worried about climate change in this heatwave

Fulbe · 23/06/2026 22:28

This heatwave has been caused by climate change but there seems to be hardly any discussion about this at all. It seems that people are focused so much on getting air con or massive paddling/ swimming pools without thinking how that might be actually contributing to the problem. People outside the school gates idling their engines to keep their air con turned on whilst creating more pollution.

I think I remember reading somewhere that we've released 6 million years' worth of CO2 in the past 150 years. Something needs to stop but consumption and car use seem to be increasing.

Am I the only one to be concerned about this and that we're just slipping into a future of more dangerous heatwaves?

We can keep all that without persisting in taking actions that cause climate change and create unsustainability of the planet. We have the knowledge and the intellect to do this ... we just need the will.

What would your solution be then? What would you say to Russia, India, china and the USA?

Thalafor · 25/06/2026 16:50

If the UK went to net zero right now nothing would change regarding climate change. Absolutely nothing, nothing at all.

This is why I think humans should just “shuffle off this mortal coil.” as it’s too late to reverse climate change.

Is infant mortality higher or lower than in ancient times? It's dramatically lower now isn't it? I wonder why.

We understand pregnancy, maternity, birth and infant care better. We are intelligent beings that have learnt these things.

What is your point?

Then join the movement and be part of the solution. This needs to be a global effort. You are a global citizen. Your help is very much needed. Your actions influence those of everyone around you: your children, your family, your friends, your husband, his friends, your work colleagues.

If only there were more people like you in the world!! I’m just find that most people are inherently selfish, and I don’t particularly like living.

What movement?
As we encourage global mobility, no one can stop it. For every legal immigrant who arrives on our shores, they will return to their country as often as they can.
Young people want to travel. Young retired want to travel. People want convenience. Not to be inconvenienced.

There is no movement. You are the movment.

Individuals influence their families, families influence communities, communities influence local leaders, local leaders influence parliament.

That's how change happens.

If everyone says and does nothing, nothing will change.

My child is very energy and water saving conscious purely because he's seen me doing it all my life. It's not at all difficult.

Doing your bit isn't virtuous - it's just living well

Fuck me I'm entering preacher territory. I think the heat is getting to me

Unless people are “forced” to change their lifestyle, we will just carry on consuming!!!

I try to do everything I can.
Start preaching to all of those with woodburners and open fires, they will tell you they can’t afford to be without them. Fuel bills are too high.
Tell your friends to only fly abroad every couple of years, they will tell you to F off.
you only have to go on a motorway at a busy time to realise that our growing population in this country is going to end badly.

You’re a mum who is doing “her bit,” and your son will hopefully grow up and continue with what you’ve taught him. We need more people like you, but sadly most people won’t give up the things that are bad for climate change. When Greenpeace fly their executives, people think, why should I give up flying?

I don't get this the whole "evil humans we should all disappear" and what. Just have animals and bugs and whatever run rampant?

There's a reason we are the dominant species. Our brain, intellect and ability to shape our environment to suite our needs.

Dominant maybe but selfish, greedy and cruel.

And we needed energy to help us understand these things better and develop the treatments needed.

And what if every country was that defeatist ?

Luckily only Libya, Yemen, Iran, and the USA are as lacking in ambition as you are.

The rest of us are working - albeit too slowly - towards a more survivable future.

No, we needed biological scientists, doctors, nurses, maternity and childcare specialists.

Intelligence and medical practice solved high infant mortality. Not the industrial revolution.

Have you lived in West Africa? Visit Lagos and it will horrify you.
China?

And by using energy, the survival of civilisation and the well-being of billions of people are under severe threat.

Thalafor · 25/06/2026 17:40

A global effort to make "green" energy cheaper and more plentifully or a effort to deindustrialise and live like hermits?

Sunshineandoranges · 25/06/2026 17:40

Lemonbiscoff · 23/06/2026 22:32

I’m worried about it, but there’s no point because anything our country does it a drop in the vast ocean. When the time comes, humans will either adapt or be taken care of permanently by Mother Nature.

I don't think our country can make enough difference. Hopefully the scientists will save the planet. I heard someone recently talking about how they are trying to make some sort of a cloud which goes up into the atmosphere and reduces heat.

6ate9 · 25/06/2026 17:38

There are 8.3 billion humans currently alive.

The proportion of the global population living in absolute poverty has fallen drastically since 1800, dropping from over 80% to roughly 9.9% today.

So what should we have done? Not used energy? Just lived like we did before we had the industrial revolution because "boo boo the environment and the animals"

I bet come December and January you'll all be missing the "naice" sunshine and weather

But they're clearly not inherently selfish, because if they were they wouldn't be engaging in a process of destroying the environment that their self relies on to survive.

Sunshineandoranges · 25/06/2026 17:48

Chritrup · 23/06/2026 22:36

We need to just face up to it now - we’re fucked. The climate cataclysm is going to happen and it’s ultimately going to end the human race as we know it. Nothing will change and we’ve gone past the point of no return.

Nope...the scientists will save us
