What will burn more calories?

I’ve asked chat gpt and just don’t believe their response.

I am new to exercising daily. Have dusted off an old exercise bike and treadmill. I aim to do one hour of cardio a day. I want to obviously just get the most my bang for my buck calorie wise (bmr for me is low - short and medical issue).

Which one burns more calories. I walk 5.5 km at 5.5 kmph speed. Or I’m on the bike for just over an hour. RPM averages around 50. I manage a distance of 11 miles an hour in that time.

Chat GPT says the bike is 1.5-2x more calorie intensive. But I find the bike much much easier

Is chat gpt telling porkies.

im 145 pounds and 5 ft 3

I will focus more on strength training but don’t have an affordable gym close by right now

Given you have literally just started this new regime… go with the one you enjoy most that you think you can stick at without dreading

Been doing it consistently for roughly for 6 weeks. I alternate, no real preference. :)

find the bike easier as I can go on my phone and get distracted

ChatGPT should give the reference that is being used to support the claim in the answer that was generated. I would use that reference to find the original source it’s quoting and then decide on whether ChatGPT is accurately summarising it.

Separately, there are lots of “calories burned” calculators online that you can use to tell you this. But I agree with @Aninkling that I would start with whichever one you’re most likely to want to do.

Aninkling · 23/06/2026 18:58

either way it will definitely be more calories if cycling. You’re just questioning how much extra you’d burn.

so given your intention is exclusively as many calories as possible… then if it was just 3 extra calories you burned - stick with cycle if you literally don’t prefer either in any way.

The most calorie effective thing is going to be to mix it up, so if you're doing an hour then 10 mins and switch. That way your body isn’t getting too used to it.

If you’re going to work out for an hour, then the best way to get in shape would be to look at doing 30-20-10. 30 mins of cardio, 20 of strength (lunges, squats etc, with weights if you have them), and then 10 of core. It’ll give you the best pay off for the hour.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 23/06/2026 19:05

It’s a relatively slow RPM on the bike - is it because you’ve got the resistance up? If so perhaps that’s why it’s burning more calories?

Sassylovesbooks · 23/06/2026 19:06

Weights is the best form of exercise to burn fat. You don't need to go to the gym. I found a work out on YouTube, that I follow for 20 minutes, 4 times per week. I have one work out for upper body and the other for lower. Go out walking and try to get 10,000 steps per day or more. Use the treadmill if you can't/don't want to go outside.

AsGoodasIOnceWas · 23/06/2026 19:07

It will depend on the resistance settings on both the treadmill and the exercise bike.

Oh yes. Sorry I should’ve mentioned I do the bike at 8 (out of 20) resistance for 7.5 miles and level 15 for 2.5 miles. Feels too easy otherwise

How old are you? If over 35, weights is the answer.

Hourz · 23/06/2026 19:10

Vi definitely will do weights. Moving soon and will have access in the month or so. Don’t want to buy a bunch of equipment. I thought some 2kg weight but friend said they won’t do much. Will absolutely add weight training when I can get to a gym,

Absolutely no resistance on treadmill (that function no longer works). Maintain a resistance of 8 (out of 20 on my Nordic machine) mostly for the bike. Do a stint at 15 for 25 miles which feels like climbing a very steep hill

That’ll be why it burns more calories, and you’ll be building more strength like that too.

Hourz · 23/06/2026 19:14

I know it’s not the ultimate routine but it be lost 11 pounds. I’m going for not letting perfect get in the way of good enough for now. Fully appreciate I can make adjustments to my routine

The cycling will clearly burn more. Walking is low intensity. If you want proper cardio you need to run. Also lift weights.

An hour every day is brilliant and clearly working for your goals. It’s easy for people to critique based on their routine but keep doing what you’re doing, stay consistent, and you’ll reap the rewards.

Ablondiebutagoody · 23/06/2026 19:24

A lot easier to not eat the calories in the first place

Can you record your heart rate? Average heart rate over a given time period is probably the easiest comparison between two different activities.

I do not ever set foot in a gym. I bought cheapo weights to start with (Aldi middle aisle!) and I’ve bought more as I’ve gone along. Free YouTube videos and get cracking! I weigh less and am in better shape now, than when I was 25. And that is a LONG time ago!

Not currently but I probably should buy a fit bit or similar

Oh thanks for this. Thought it would be expensive. Will have a look :)
