Feeling uncomfortable after sharing a seat with a very obese passenger

On public transport earlier. A very large woman sits nexts to me. She couldn’t get the seat belt
round her. Her body spilt over into my seat, leaving me squashed with what little space there was left.

On the journey I couldn’t help be annoyed at the lack of space I was left with and questioning how do people let themselves get to that size. Talking morbidly obese, not just larger - whatever the medical
term.

This isn’t about shaming, more I’m in disbelief people being that big are happy? Why wouldn’t you want to loose some weight for a healthier lifestyle.

@Bayleaftree63 I was morbidly obese, 22st, probably much like the woman you describe. I was not happy at that weight. The woman you saw today is probably also not happy being that weight. She was probably very aware of not fitting into the seat and of offending you and squashing you.

People like me and the woman you saw today will have tried millions of times to lose weight, unsuccessfully. Often you have some short term success but then you regain and usually gain more. It’s a well known cycle that is almost impossible to get out of once you’ve headed that way. I don’t think you quite understand the consistent sustained effort it takes to lose large amounts of weight.

Agree 100% I’m 65 and have been obese for years. Something’clicked’ in my head a year ago and I have finally managed to lose six stone. I wrote down every single thing I ate (still do) and stuck to 3500 calories a week. Being obese is horrible, uncomfortable, unhealthy. If it was easy to lose weight, nobody would choose to stay fat.
What we don’t need is people saying or posting negative comments, as if we are mentally deficient and don’t know we’re big.

To be fair on OP I had a morbidly obese coworker and within about 20min after work started, her t-shirt was already a pool of sweat. It’s just a consequence of the weight.

I wouldn’t want anyone sweating glued to me in this heat, thin or obese. Hell, I don’t even want my partner being skin to skin with me right now.

That is not necessarily true. My partner is skinny, 28inch waist and sweats profusely.

Thankfully he also showers very very regularly!

With kindness I really hope that you are under the care of a dietician and that you have received expert advice before reducing your calorie intake to such a deficit. 3500 kcal a week is not sustainable and you are running the risk of starving your body and losing muscle mass as well as bone density. This is an extreme approach to weight loss and doing it without professional input is dangerous. 6 stone weight loss is an achievement and I’m sorry to p*ss on your parade but this is concerning.

I had this once on a national express coach from London to Newcastle. It was hideous.
The lady said ‘ oh at least you’re little!’ as she took up st least 60% of my seat.
i have no judgement about people’s size or how they got there as it’s non of my business but they should book two seats.
i have an autistic child who needs a lot of space for his various needs and id never expect other people to accommodate that. In the cinema and in trains I always pay for two seats

Hardly fair on you

I didn’t say only obese people sweat.

No but you infer the sweating is due to the obesity.

What you did is the equivalent of:

"My neighbour was a pack a day smoker and dies at 65 from lung cancer."

"Well my uncle never smoked a day in his life and still died of lung cancer."
