To think Andy Burnham is smug?

To think Andy Burnham is smug and presumptuous. Just that really and I have no particular political preference, disillusioned with the lot!

Why should he be? He’d be an unelected one and on what manifesto?

All PMs are unelected as PM. They are elected as a party so as the leader of the winning party, he is perfectly entitled to be PM

I have tried to explain this to the ones wanging on about being unelected PMs but I think some are struggling with it 🤣

If Andy Burnham is smug, what are we supposed to make of superdim Kemi's performance today? Spiteful, underhand and just an all round shitty person. Not the best application to be future leader of the country, is it? Or has she recognised her own limitations and accepted that it is never going to happen? "Pair of eyelashes and a black t-shirt" indeed. Imagine if a male MP said that about a woman.

What a horrible, misogynistic thing to say. Spiteful is a word only ever applied to a woman.

Perhaps he should dress for the occasion if he’s assuming he’s going to be leading the country.

Personally I don’t care what he wears, I care that he deems it acceptable to virtue signal about being a trans ally until he runs in the by-election, and then he apparently changes his mind.

I care that he’s arrogant enough to assume that he’s going to get the top job.

I don’t care that much about AB either way, but agree the pp’s take on KB is worse.

Bookbears · 24/06/2026 15:27

He seems to be being pushed as some kind of saviour to the country and Labour Party which I am very suspicious of. It’s not the question you asked but I actually don’t think that political parties should be allowed to do this. He wasn’t a MP, he shouldn’t be able to run as one until the next general election. He shouldn’t be allowed to be put into office to then take the job of PM, with no parliamentary experience. It’s really bloody strange. If the PM resigns, it should be deputy that takes over and in actual fact, if a PM resigns it should automatically trigger a general election.

Despite of the massive mess he has made, the majority of the British public voted for Kier Starmer to be PM because they wanted him and his policies. To just shoehorn a mayor in to take his place is not abiding to the democratic vote. We have no idea what Burnham is planning but we will all have to just suck it up. It shouldn’t be possible.

Badenoch called Bridget Phillipson a spiteful class warrior today so clearly she hasn't got the memo it's a horrible misogynist term for a woman.
PP was at least judging on the disgraceful behaviour she'd observed today (the Burnham insult was very low). Badenoch was using it without grounds, merely to insult another woman for implementing a policy she disagreed with.

Why a general election when we don’t elect a PM? Plus if people can’t serve as an mp until the general election then if the current MP dies/is sacked etc, that leaves constituencies unrepresented.

Hence by-elections.

Nobody except his own constituents voted for Starmer.

Starmer often tried to call KB irrelevant. It’s good he’s been ousted.

Her personally, or the party she leads? If the first, that's rude and unecessary. If he was speaking about the Conservatives in general at the moment, then he could probably justify it.
However, as far as I know, AB hasn't said anything to her to justify being dismissed as a pair of eyelashes and a black t shirt.
I look forward to seeing them go head to head and how he deals with her 'debating style'.

Her personally unfortunately. In PMQs

Whilst I’m pleased RR and BP are likely going I think it’s more his failings as leader than theirs. Or both.

On AB I have no bad feelings towards him but nearly everyone is talking about his eyelashes and casual wear. He can take it in good humour I’m sure.

Well, we'll see what he can do. I'm supportive of him replacing Starmer, I think its necessary.

A problem with Kemi Badenoch is that she’s one of those people who are in far more comfortable territory when they are assailing and attacking . She isn’t flexible in that way.

Her comments to Phillipson today and last week were very nasty.

And have you seen the company she is keeping at the ARC conference ?

He was our mayor and wasted a phenomenal amount of money on a clean air zone that never happened.
and then decided he didn’t want that job anymore, when something more powerful came along.., he is all about himself and his power.
i would never vote for him to be PM

I would imagine that Mancunians are dancing in the streets now he's taken his pet projects to London!

Starmer was belittling and it fed into his outcome. Idk how she put up with it.

Perhaps AB will be better than KS, we’ll see.

Irrespective of politics I think he has a face asking for a slap, there are a coule of other very famous names who provoke that reaction in me too for no real reason!

Spiteful is a gender-neutral work. If you have to make something up to give you something to object to, you're probably not on very solid ground. FYI calling a woman misogynistic for criticising another woman is pretty damn low.

You may not be aware of this but women can be misogynistic. And since when are men described as spiteful?

Don’t accuse people of making stuff up - it’s not a good look, dear 😊

Kemi Badenoch probably has a point - I certainly recall this tweet from Bridget Phillipson, which would fit the description of spiteful class warrior;

That's an extremely poor example, given even a half wit would be forced to agree those are two factual statements.

A shame for her the policy implemented has been seen as a failure by the NEU and they’ve said she should go.
