I got to my early 40s without ever needing to claim but circumstances find me single and paying the lions share of child related outgoings.

I work full time on£31,000 and have found out this year thanks to applying that I get on average about £800 from UC. It has been an absolute life changer and will hopefully be able to afford a modest uk holiday actually during the summer holidays and pay the school back some debt im in for after school care.

So many benefits bashing threads so I just wanted to present another side that as a cash strapped mum of two who works full time, UC is making a positive difference to our life. I didn't even think id qualify!

That isn’t true at all. These people find loopholes, move money to offshore accounts, claim non-dom status, spend large amounts of time out of the UK. They do not pay the most when looking at their % of income. It’s middle earners who are hit the hardest in this country.

the top 1% pay proportionally the most.. I actually looked at HMRC.

Illegal evasion dwarfs legal avoidance and is mostly done by sole traders and SMEs taking cash payments and not declaring and/or making tax inaccuracies

People in 'the north' don't'' have jobs? Is that what you're saying? And those that do earn less than 30k? Have you ever even been to 'the north'?

Is that the north as in north of the m25 or the real north too? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I live in the real north, earn well above average for the area and frankly live a quality of life the south would never allow. But shhhh it’s grim up here don’t tell them!

ThatLemonBee · 20/06/2026 19:00

Hope you manage to get a holiday hun , check abroad holidays too as they acre often cheaper than I’m one . Check euro camps as they are so much better and cheaper thus than uk ones and the weather is guaranteed to be nice .
Everyone that works full time deserve a nice holiday

‘everyone”? No, they don’t!

You appear on ALL these threads. As a claimant. I am NOT a claimant, never have been. It is really so difficult for you to see we might have different points of view??

Is that the real ego and north or the Scottish highlands ? Because I live in the Scottish highlands so tatus north for me.
Im joking by the way , having lived for many years before moving here just a few miles form the m25 I know how low quality of life you get for your money down south . I wish I moved up here sooner as my kids would have had so many more holidays

To be classed as the top 1% you’re looking at an income of around £200,000 a year. A very good wage but not the multi millionaires and billionaires I was referencing. Guess how much Jeff Bezos paid last year?……£0

Blushingm · 20/06/2026 19:09

I have to say I had 2 DC and single and earned less than OP - but because I had a mortgage not rental I had no help at all. I get I’d bought but even help towards the interest rather than capital would have helped

Answer the bloody question then! I pay, huge, huge, amounts tax. I couldn’t ever hope to reclaim it in my lifetime or that of my children or their children. I have PAID and paid willingly, far more than my share. So no, not everyone “pays” not like I do, at least! So we, very clearly, have different points of view?

You’re making out she has 10k to spend in one go though which is not the case.

£800 pm, £10k pa, is a huge income boost and the OP, who agrees it's generous, is planning to buy a few clothes and have a holiday. I only asked what is she going to do with the rest?

You stated not everyone pays taxes. I said VAT is a tax.
It is not that deep.

TheWorthyNewt · 20/06/2026 19:13

You're lucky you get that. I know people with families who earn a lot less and get nowhere near that? I think you're talking 💩

Have they applied to see if they can claim anything? It is always worth giving it a go if they are struggling.

Well then don’t comment on things you know literally nothing about. Social housing in the UK absolutely is subsidised, as it should be.

The UK is NOT England!

Course not, because YOU aren’t the one that’s paying!! Same old same old. As long as “your” money arrives, you don’t care.

Ok then, tell me about the different social housing subsides across England, Scotland and Wales? Oh, you don’t know? I’m shocked.

I pay VAT, which a tax. No one is immune from giving some back, in what ever form. Like I said, it is not that deep.

The benefits don't exist so you can go on holidays and pay off debts do they?

The benefits exist so she can afford the childcare she needs to work. Clearly without the benefits she couldn't, hence being in debt to the after school club. Surely giving her the help she needs is better then her loosing the childcare and having to leave her job.

And that where you live? Your political opinion? I pay VAT so all is well? What, exactly do you think would happen if all the higher rate earners only paid VAT?

I never said that. YOU told another poster that "not everyone pays tax" (which you denied even though it is on this thread, clear as day!). I said everyone pays VAT, which is a tax.
Nothing about any of the rest you are on about. A simple "VAT is a tax, and everyone pays it".
You are reading into it way too much and getting into a rage.

Jeff Bezos paid an estimated $2.7 billion in federal income taxes for 2024 in the USA where he is a tax resident.

Amazon pays taxes here.

BlueFahrenheit · 20/06/2026 19:31

I question the intention behind the OP's intentions with this post.

not quite it was due because of his estimated tax bill came from capital gains after he sold $13.6 billion worth of Amazon stock.
