I got to my early 40s without ever needing to claim but circumstances find me single and paying the lions share of child related outgoings.

I work full time on£31,000 and have found out this year thanks to applying that I get on average about £800 from UC. It has been an absolute life changer and will hopefully be able to afford a modest uk holiday actually during the summer holidays and pay the school back some debt im in for after school care.

So many benefits bashing threads so I just wanted to present another side that as a cash strapped mum of two who works full time, UC is making a positive difference to our life. I didn't even think id qualify!

I agree. They also chastise those in the lowest socio-economic positions for needing benefits. How many people chastise the multi millionaires or billionaires who pay NO tax in this country?? It’s classic scapegoating.

This isn't true. They actually pay the most.

What did you earn in your early 20s?

Allrightonthenight1 · 20/06/2026 18:37

You're getting £10k you weren't expecting and it will buy the children's clothes and a week in a caravan? What are you gong to spend the other £8k on? I agree, it's an extremely generous amount.

That isn’t true at all. These people find loopholes, move money to offshore accounts, claim non-dom status, spend large amounts of time out of the UK. They do not pay the most when looking at their % of income. It’s middle earners who are hit the hardest in this country.

Oh fgs it’s not as if it’s 10k as a lump sum 🙄

100% this. Savings for a raining day

BUT, if she takes them away for the weekend, then the memories could give them sunshine on a cloudy day.

She's bringing them up on her own.

They need some time just to enjoy themselves surely?

WeatherOrNothing · 20/06/2026 18:40

XenoBitch · 20/06/2026 14:24

OP only gets them because she is a single parent with a kid.
If you are single with no kids, you get no help.

Why would you need help if you have no kids?

curiositykilledthecat0 · 20/06/2026 18:39

It's an £800 pm net increase in income - nearly £10k pa. If you received a £15k pay rise, you'd feel very well off even though it isn't a lump sum.

You’re making out she has 10k to spend in one go though which is not the case.

Everyone pays taxes though...

‘everyone”? No, they don’t!

Sunshineandrainbow · 20/06/2026 18:45

You are entitled to it..

Random Question... If someone with older teen kids works say 15 hours a week will UC still top up or are people with older kids expected to work more hours?

XenoBitch · 20/06/2026 18:37

What did you earn in your early 20s?

More than that, at 25. In the “north”. With zero family assistance. It IS possible. And you yelling that it’s not helps no one, because it absolutely is.

farref · 20/06/2026 18:51

If someone needs a UC top up because otherwise they and their dependents would starve and/or not meet essentials I understand it.

Am I wrong in saying that welfare for those able bodied and of able mind should be time limited?

And you know if you need welfare it should be for the essentials to survive and be in good health? Should someone else's hard earned money pay for a holiday?

No, I was asking someone else who has come on here and asked why OP is not earning more because her son earns more and is younger.
It is snobby.

Value Added Tax? What’s your point? No matter what you earn you pay that. Don’t blame me for that, it’s the government!

Yep, everyone pays tax in some form.

Yes, but SOME people pay an AWFUL lot more? Surely, you can understand that! It’s basic maths.

She will no longer get the single person discount on council tax. Nothing wrong with charging adult children that live with you money towards bills etc. Adult children are not free to house and feed etc.
She works full time anyway.

Yes but they may want to go to university and I can betcha OP will be aghast that those costs etc. so maybe this generous help now should be saved instead of spend on holidays.

No, I didn’t. I said, very clearly that SOME people pay more than others. That is a basic fact, easily proven. What don’t you understand?

loveandletdie · 20/06/2026 14:21

Excuse my ignorance as I’m not from the UK but my understanding that universal credit was to help low income people/families with day to day life but not to fund holidays as they are a luxury

It’s to help fund families up what they think it’s the minimum amount families should have . They do not control neither should they control how it’s spend . I’m sure many will use it for things other consider a luxury , hairdressers, bald , cigarettes , alcohol etc but if op can manage to save what others would spend otherwise it’s up to her to go on holiday or not .
