Broken cake stand

ShadowPaint · 19/06/2026 09:55

14 years ago I received the most glorious white bone china cake stand with glass dome as a wedding present from my grandmother. It was a Royal Doulton collab and it was simple yet refined and absolutely perfect for fitting all my oversized kid’s birthday cakes onto. It’s now smashed.
The incident involved a disagreement over a second piece of cake and the lid was placed down too roughly and it shattered everywhere, the base split in two.
It wasn’t me who broke it but I’m now looking for a fitting replacement. Nothing in the shops I can find seems as elegant or beautiful. The ones I find have knobs at the top that seem disproportionally oversized and the base not elegant or they are too plain.
Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm in the US and collected Royal Dalton Brambly Hedge many years ago. I noticed some of the sets had missing pieces and suspect my eldest son broke them when he was a kid and never said anything. To complete the sets I found a web site that sold replacement pieces. I think it might have been this site, link below. You may have similar businesses in England.

Try this website

www.chinasearch.co.uk/

China Search are brilliant. I've replaced a few items from a dinner service over the years and bought some extra plates too. You can set up a search if they don't currently have the item in stock.

I have a similar one from Neptune

Yes, I did think it doesn't look too big. I have one that I bought years ago and I'm sure it's bigger but it's at the back of a cupboard.

i bought one a good 15 years ago and it is bigger. The OP’s is much nicer but I’m not allowed nice glass things as I tend to drop them.

Never broken a cheap glass item. It’s always the good stuff 🤣

Have you tried Etsy? Lots of different options on there. Good luck (especially as their search engine has been ‘improved’ and is rubbish.

Who was the twat who broke the dome?

Are they going to reimburse you / help
look for a replacement?

I thought the same, made me disproportionately angry reading that.

Sympathy. Was this Donna Hay for Royal Doulton? I hunt on eBay and Vinted for replacements.

Yes it was Donna Hay.

Have a look on Nisbet's, The olympia dome is nice as the stands.

Oh gawd I love Nisbets. I could spend all my money in there.

Well I found this one. Then noticed the price 😳 johnjulian.co.uk/products/classical-cake-stand-large

I bet Peter Murrell has that one @Skyflymom .😉

This is such a good resource thank you. Couldn’t see it there but they did have my dinner set.

That’s really lovely and looks like it would fit. I will keep that one in mind thanks.

There’s Donna Hay for Royal Doulton cake stand (base only) on sale on eBay.

Have this one. It’s really lovely but the height and shape of the dome doesn’t work for very high cakes

Schnapper · 21/06/2026 03:11

Apologies if this has already been posted. Also wooden and very similar to the JL one, slightly different proportions. They also have a ceramic stand but it has blue shading.

I've liked everything we've had from Procook. It's felt like quality, with good "heft". It's hard to convey in a photo.

Calm down, it was probably her child! Accidents happen, for goodness sake.

Calm down, the thread has long since moved down. Read all of OP’s posts for a start.

You mean the post in which she says exactly what I said to you? I admit I didn’t read it before I posted but very odd that you are so keen to point out I was right to tell you to chill out…

No, you weren’t right. Read the thread before adding your unhelpful tuppence.

Very ofd that you admit you didn’t read the thread but are still belligerent.

it wasn’t me who called OP’s child a twat 😘

Not surprised you’re the type of person who resorts to lies and misrepresentations.

I have it too and like it, but it's not as nice as OP's. And I agree about stuff not fitting. Because it's got rounded sides, not vertical, you can't get that large a cake under it. OP's dimensions were so good.

Marmalademorning · 21/06/2026 17:22

I pay for the pro version of Gemini OP, and this is what it came up with when I asked it to help me find you a replacement:

Here are a few excellent replacement options available on the market that capture that simple, elegant aesthetic without the "disproportionately oversized knobs" she mentioned wanting to avoid:
Mumsnet

  1. The Premium Option: LSA International 'Vienna' Or 'Serve' Cake Stand & Dome
  • Style: Known for incredibly refined, mouth-blown glass and minimalist porcelain/glass structures.
  • Why it fits: LSA International specializes in the exact "simple yet refined" look ShadowPaint loves. Their larger 32–34cm sets feature beautifully balanced, low-profile glass handles rather than aggressive, chunky knobs.
  • Mumsnet
  1. The High-Street Classic: BIA Porcelain Cake Stand & Glass Dome (Large)
  • Style: Crisp white porcelain pedestal with a perfectly proportioned glass dome.
  • John Lewis
  • Why it fits: BIA makes clean, professional-grade porcelain serveware. While their standard large size sits around 30.5cm, they occasionally cycle through extra-large pastry stands that mimic the exact silhouette of the truck cake stand in IMG_5376.jpg.
  • John Lewis
  1. The Bespoke Route: Separate Base and Dome (The "Perfect Fit" Strategy)
Since ShadowPaint specifically mentioned her old base was a massive 33cm–35cm, finding a pre-matched commercial set that large with a delicate handle can be tough. A brilliant alternative is to build a replica: Mumsnet+ 1
  • The Base: Look for a Sophie Conran for Portmeirion large white footed cake platter or a classic white bone china charger/pedestal plate.
  • eBay UK
  • The Dome: Buy a standalone extra-large glass cloche/dome (frequently sold by hospitality suppliers or baking specialists in 32cm+ sizes) featuring a simple glass loop handle.
🔍 Tip for tracking down the exact vintage piece: If you want to hunt down the exact Royal Doulton collab item on eBay or Etsy for her, set up automated alerts using these search terms: Mumsnet
  • "Royal Doulton" "cake stand" dome
  • "Royal Doulton" white bone china pedestal
This will alert you the second an original from a past collection gets listed by a vintage reseller!
