Broken cake stand

ShadowPaint · Today 09:55

14 years ago I received the most glorious white bone china cake stand with glass dome as a wedding present from my grandmother. It was a Royal Doulton collab and it was simple yet refined and absolutely perfect for fitting all my oversized kid’s birthday cakes onto. It’s now smashed.
The incident involved a disagreement over a second piece of cake and the lid was placed down too roughly and it shattered everywhere, the base split in two.
It wasn’t me who broke it but I’m now looking for a fitting replacement. Nothing in the shops I can find seems as elegant or beautiful. The ones I find have knobs at the top that seem disproportionally oversized and the base not elegant or they are too plain.
Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I can understand why you want to replace it; that cake stand is really lovely!

It might help you to find another original if you can say who the collab was with?

This is such a good idea! I’ve had the glass Ikea cake stand for donkeys years, but didn’t realise how much I needed the dome… must look at all the links!

I've got a plastic one that looks near enough identical to that. But obviously it's not got the quality. But I bought it from Amazon ages ago and it's still going strong. If it's plastic you won't care if it breaks again. At least while you hunt for the posh one?

Try googling China Matching Service, which will bring up ChinaSearch, ChinaMatch and quite a few others that offer replacement pieces.

This glass cake dome is is 30.8cm which might be a good fit for your base if you're planning on mending the base.

I would take the chance to get a completely different one at least till your children are grown up. A lot of the ones suggested look very breakable. TK Maxx often have cake stands, not sure about domes though.

Sympathy. Was this Donna Hay for Royal Doulton? I hunt on eBay and Vinted for replacements.

SqueakyFromme · Today 12:43

SqueakyFromme · Today 12:46

I have a beautiful LSA rose bud vase with a small chip in the side - hence I don’t think I can be trusted with anything else! 🤭

Wow! I was a PA at LSA, I didn't realise they were still going! I feel a bit nostalgic now. I hope you find a replacement, have you tried Google lens op?

Dogsandtoast · Today 16:08

Just a thought, but it's impossible to replace your lovely stand, as it was from your grandmother. Why not buy something a little different - things get broken over the years, and just go for something else. IKEA have very cheap ones, but there are so many lovely cake stands with domes out there.

665theneighborofthebeast · Today 16:33

Why not go to a pottery painting place. You and your son can make a new special one between you, and get a plastic dome for now? Maybe replace the dome it later if it survives his childhood.
You can't replace something your grandma gave you but you can make new special things, with new special memories.

You could plan it between you. And if he's a bit wobbly on the painting..all the better.
Or you can "print" it with leaves and fingerprints and it will be even better.

Oh! What about a drawing of your family, and include grandma , even if its from a photo xx

I haven't read all posts so apologies if being repeated but if you do a pic search on amazon using this pic plenty come up very similar of all different sizes. If unsure how to pic search drop me a reply and I'll talk you through it 😊

That is very interesting, I would love to work for a company that made beautiful products, did you work at the actual manufacturing facility and did you get a staff discount?

SqueakyFromme · Today 16:48

@pinkpony88 that's a shame, the crytal is so beautiful isnt it ? , my bowl is in the kitchen and gets really defined refraction from the sun. I wash my glasses by hand and pack them back in their box between uses as they were a gift.

PS that cake stand you linked is fantastic
