Broken cake stand

ShadowPaint · Today 09:55

14 years ago I received the most glorious white bone china cake stand with glass dome as a wedding present from my grandmother. It was a Royal Doulton collab and it was simple yet refined and absolutely perfect for fitting all my oversized kid’s birthday cakes onto. It’s now smashed.
The incident involved a disagreement over a second piece of cake and the lid was placed down too roughly and it shattered everywhere, the base split in two.
It wasn’t me who broke it but I’m now looking for a fitting replacement. Nothing in the shops I can find seems as elegant or beautiful. The ones I find have knobs at the top that seem disproportionally oversized and the base not elegant or they are too plain.
Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

@pinkpony88 that's a shame, the crytal is so beautiful isnt it ? , my bowl is in the kitchen and gets really defined refraction from the sun. I wash my glasses by hand and pack them back in their box between uses as they were a gift.

PS that cake stand you linked is fantastic

Edited

Its beautiful, but the height of the sides on the base makes it almost impossible to cut down a full slice without poking at it, and very difficult to get a "cake slice " server under it.

Just another suggestion, although not 100% the same.

TK Maxx often has beautiful large domes (with a stand).

I would make it a habit to pop in when you’re in town.

My two similar ones both came from TK Maxx (or maybe Homesense). They've travelled around without incident.

You may find this an odd reply but I would honestly look in charity shops because a lot of things manufactured today are not as elegant looking or good quality as they were.

You could try here:
Discontinued China & New Tableware at Chinasearch | If We Don't Have It - We'll Find It
They might be able to help with the base, then you just need to find a dome you like the look/weight of.🤞🏻

That is very interesting, I would love to work for a company that made beautiful products, did you work at the actual manufacturing facility and did you get a staff discount?

I worked at the UK head office and the mad as a box of frogs (but in a good way)Polish boss imported the kitchen stuff from Poland, glass, china, enamelware and wooden items. Staff were given samples and rejects and we could buy items at large discounts. I gave away my enamelware to a friend with a narrowboat. Sadly most stuff got damaged over the years.

@CherryRipe1 I wonder if the caviar server is a high runner! I'm tempted by that triple divided serving dish it's spectacular

🤣 They did use to import some odd stuff but supply and demand..... I misread 'triple' as 'tripe' and wondered what strange kitchenalia they were selling now.

Can’t help with regards a replacement but just wanted to say that it was such a shame! The cake stand was absolutely beautiful! Classical, simple, perfect and just gorgeous! Really hope you find a replacement! Your poor son must be beside himself! But your gran would have been over the moon knowing that her gift to you has meant so much!

Plinketyplonks · Today 18:46

I’ve got a beautiful splatterware one with a glass dome lid I bought in 2023/24. If you might like that I can look up the manufacturer/website. Everyone admires it!

Skyflymom · Today 18:49

Well I found this one. Then noticed the price 😳 johnjulian.co.uk/products/classical-cake-stand-large

Agree and its royal doulton, probably UK manufactured and not easily replaced so used is the way to go. Anything new for sale now just won't compare. I get why OP is upset.

They're nice but actually not that big! They just fit a 2lb loaf cake underneath with buttercream/ fruit on top and that's only if the cakes perfectly centered.

ShesGotAway · Today 19:16

Nisbets is a great site though, I buy from there a lot (for work) and you absolutely get the quality you pay for on there. Unless it's on sale. You can get some great bits of kit on sale.

Yes, I did think it doesn't look too big. I have one that I bought years ago and I'm sure it's bigger but it's at the back of a cupboard.

How smashed is it? You could look for a kintsugi(sp?) Kit - typically it uses gold coloured stuff (cant think of the word!), to repair broken crockery. You end up eith something that has been repaired so looks different but still beautiful!

I was going to suggest this. Such a beautiful idea 😍

ebay is brilliant for this kind of thing. May take a while but I bet the exact cake stand pops up within a few months.

I've been buying a few of the caithness bon bon footed bowls from ebay no two are the same as hand blown. They're lovely and no longer made and can get them for less than £15 it's depressing that everything is imported and disposable now I think

CherryRipe1 · Today 19:37

How about purchasing a large glass dome as near as the original as possible and find a ceramics worker or potter to recreate or repair the base invisibly?

redbex11 · Today 19:45

Hiya. I expext I am too late to the party now but I saw an amazing idea yesterday where you place broken crockery that means something to you, but can't be fixed, in a clear glass vase or bowl so that you still "have it" and can see it without having to throw it away and "lose it ". Sorry if I am too late.
