Greenery on things where it doesnt belong

Ordered baked beans on toast (we'll come back to that) today.

Came with a clump of greenery on top. Salad garni.

What person in their right mind does this?

And OF COURSE it was bloody sourdough. Because NO other bread exists these days. And it was not toasted. It was barely within sight of the toaster I reckon

So it turns up with its green clump and then, to make matters much worse, it came with some butter pats but THE BEANS WERE ALREADY ON THE UNTOASTED TOAST.

So I scraped off my beans to try to spread the butter but of course this was a wasted effort because the butter wouldnt adhere to the untoasted toast due to the bean juice so I ended up just smearing it around while it stuck to my knife.

Anyway back to the greenery. I cant tell you how many bits of rocket have gone flying down the road before when served atop something, because of course a bit of wind will pick up salad and send it flying into the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian.

And dont get me started on bloody pea shoots.

YANBU - Garnishing perfectly adequate meals with frilly extras is a performative nonsense to make something out of nothing

YABU - I really like bits of salad on top of a full English and you're only posting this because your OH has the football on anyway and you're bored.

My DH once made me scrambled egg on buttered toast and thought a garnish of fresh basil would be nice... just no.

Bookaholicwithwine · 18/06/2026 23:24

You’re not being that unreasonable but if you have beans on sourdough you don’t need butter , you have all the lovely juice soaking into the bread !

That’s heresy. You can’t have beans on toast without butter.

I had French toast for breakfast once. At 9am. Not brunch, actual breakfast and it came with a salad on the side. Dressed!!! So ended up with soggy mustard vinaigrette flavoured French Toast!!! No. No. No.

maxslice · 18/06/2026 23:55

Microgreens are loaded with nutrients. And they can be delicious when you CHOOSE to use them. To just have them presented on your food like green pubic hair when you haven’t asked for them is not okay.

Going massively off-topic here, I know (sorry, OP), but I hate raw coriander — it tastes very scented to me — and I found out the other day it’s genetic. It’s a gene called OR6A2, apparently, and if you have it, it means you’re particularly sensitive to certain chemical compounds found in coriander (which, to be fair, are also found in soaps and detergents — so no wonder it tastes scented!). If you don’t have the gene, you presumably think raw coriander is simply refreshing and tasty, and not the devil’s own herb…

Interesting. I hate coriander and I also hate a lot of artificial fragrances. The fragrance on Always pads almost makes me gag and I genuinely struggle with scent of fake tan. I often wondered if I'm not just fussy and there's a scientific reason for being so sensitive to smell.

This was already a very enjoyable thread and I think we all have to agree that this comment elevates it to Classics.

@BetterWithPockets I wonder if that's the same kind of thing with asparagus. Some factor makes your pee smell funny . I have it apparently. First few times I thought WTF is that horrible smell in the bathroom. It was me . Having a pee.

I think that’s a reference to proper English toast done on a toasting fork in front of an open fire, as opposed to under a grill or in a toaster.

Which is obviously the best kind of toast, as long as it’s a thick slice of farmhouse white slathered with lots of salty butter.

When I was about 7 we moved to a new house. The floor was some horrid freezing black stuff until my parents bought carpets.

My brother and I were not allowed to cook without adult supervision. On the weekend my parents would have a lie in, often until mid day.

I can remember my brother and I making toast with cheap white bread, and ordinary fork and holding them against the grill of the gas fire and trying not to freeze our feet.

It seemed to take about an hour to toast.

It is not a happy memory.

Agree. Can’t stand the look or smell of them, and god help me if I get a bit of sauce on my finger when giving to my hubby😱

I bloody love baked beans

I’d heard it was genetic. To me, it tastes absolutely vile. I can taste the smallest speck of fresh coriander. Interestingly, I don’t mind dried coriander in curries etc. Apparently, the powder is from the seed, hence the different taste.

Oh I forgot about flowery shit too

Yesterday, at a pub, a nice old country pub, ordered a scone.

Firstly, I accepted it wasnt going to be quite up to par as it was whipped cream instead of clotted but I was desperate for a scone and cream, you know how it is, so I accepted this. But the cream came with some strawberries in it and some flowers on it.

It was very nice of course, but flowers. Very pretty, but flowers?

I think when you’ve already had to adjust to a different type of cream, to accept flowers, is tough on you.

Its completely unacceptable. But Im British and therefore I smiled sweetly when asked if everything is ok and seethed silently and then started a thread slagging off the practice on a forum.

I am British and I would have said something there and then. I cannot bare people with no backbone, who moan and whinge after the event but do not have the guts to speak their mind. Its very underhand and sneaky.

GalaDinner · 19/06/2026 12:20

Pah. Vitamin dodgers, the lot of you.

Although I must confess as a Coeliac, ANY additional flourishes or add-ons to the plate but not on the menu can result in me having to send it back, with all kinds of Unpleasantness. Just why?

ReadySaltedSquares · 17/06/2026 22:08

I hear you. Salad and dressing (usually with a shit load of raw red onion) really ruins the comfort of jacket potato beans and cheese 😢

Now, I like the slightly sweaty salad garnish in this case. But it must be iceberg and no dressing. Don’t try to be fancy with a jacket.

I think this is a fair compromise - I’ll accept it!

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · 19/06/2026 13:56

Soft YABU because I understand the lighhearted vibe.
I like the little extra touch of greenery. It kids of males it feels like something nice, that you've ordered, rather than something you could just make at home. Even though deep down I know they are just cash and carry beans and my beans at home are probably better quality, the greenery tricks my brain into thinking otherwise. And I like the taste too.
You are also BU about sourdough. Sourdough is delish and I am not wanting a couple of slices of generic Warburton's when I am out.

The butter however is a perfectly reasonable gripe. I expect they do it so that they can avoid accidently giving butter to a vegan, but they could easily just say "would you like your toast buttered?". Two packets on the side when the toast has already been beaned is no use to man or beast.

eastegg · 19/06/2026 14:09

YA absolutely NBU.

Another baked beans thread! The other Op was NBU either. But beware, some on the other thread thought that she should have asked for a description of what baked beans are. (I know!!)

If all you want to order is beans on toast for breakfast my advice would be to prepare and enjoy it at home. Your choice of bread, butter and brand of beans. Prefer HP to Heinz myself. Save yourself ££££s too.
