I am a comfy size 18.

For some (stupid) reason I thought that "extra large" would fit me.

I was wrong.

if 14 or thereabouts is extra large, what size is blimmin normal size?

???

I would have put 14 as a medium

Which shop?

fryalot · 24/06/2008 10:52

twas only ethel austins. Their sizes are normally quite generous as well, which is why I thought I was safe.

They were only a fiver as well, but even so...

IME the more expensive the label the smaller the sizes ie there are very few clothes on Net-a-Porter larger than a 12-14

TK Max is guilty of this crime

I think net a porter is good. Fab sale at the mo too!

I used to run a shop and the standard sizing for practically all brands is
XS - 8
S - 10
M - 12
L - 14
XL - 16

Although Italian brands always come up a bit skimpy so you need to size up meaning XL would be a 14!

A new shop opened close to us recently carrying clothes by a few different up and coming designers. I think it is aimed at the younger end of the market. The sign to explain one designer's sizes was
small = 6-8
medium = 8-10
large = 10-12

When I moaned to DH he said that's ok just buy a large if you want anything. He so doesn't understand women...

YANBU - they are doing themselves a disservice too because nobody wants to be an XXL or worse do they?

Surely it would make more sense to size smaller than the actual size so put a size 10 in a size 12 pair of trousers or whatever. Keep the customer happy, if a little deluded about their real size.

YABU...don't you know only size 0 to 8 get to wear clothes...the rest of us have to make do with a tent, some black bin bage and gaffa tape

I would not call a 14 extra large, can you take them back?
