Harsh to say DP’s gym outfit is icky?

Wifey22 · 15/06/2026 13:41

DP is in decent shape, but I told him I found his outfit for the gym funny when he went on lunch.

Trainers/socks/shorts - normally obviously. But he then wore a Nike vest with it 🙃

I said I find vests icky and prefer t shirts.

YANBU - agree men wearing vests to gym is a bit icky
YABU - I don’t see any issue with it

Your voting makes no sense. I think you're being unreasonable for trying to tell him what he wears, but if I vote yabu then according to your poll that means I'm agreeing with you

FookFookFook · 15/06/2026 13:46

It’s normal gym wear in warm weather. You are being weird!

patooties · 15/06/2026 13:47

I never want to see anyone’s damp armpit hair 🤮

Darragon · 15/06/2026 13:48

"Icky" is what two year olds say when their ice cream gets all over their hands.

MargotLovesTom · 15/06/2026 13:50

He can wear what he wants to go to the gym! Sheesh.

Speakerof · 15/06/2026 13:51

I think it's gross when people have their armpits out in the gym, sweating on everything. I'm also well aware that's my issue and people have a right to wear what's most comfortable for them to wear and that gym equipment gets sweaty anyway, so I keep that to myself.

persisted · 15/06/2026 13:51

No-one gets to tell me what to wear, so I don't get to say that to anyone else.

DierdreDaphne · 15/06/2026 13:54

I don't like them either. I think I dislike the sleeveless-but-not-vest style even more. However I m not sure how OK it is to say anything to your dh or anyone else...(I am probably in the wrong here b/c I have told my dh I don't like his sleeveless number and so am also guilty of "policing" his attire..😅)

I'll join you on the naughty step OP.

stargirl27 · 15/06/2026 14:25

i dont really like them but yabu for trying to tell him what to wear

UniquePinkSwan · 15/06/2026 14:27

He can wear what he wants. No one should be telling anyone what they should wear. That’s icky

Wifey22 · 15/06/2026 14:28

I’m not sure how anyone has got the impression I told him what he can or can’t wear, that’s not what I said is it.

I think it's fine, it's just arms and armpits! Women wear vest tops all the time, and to exercise in, your question was was it harsh, maybe, depending what your relationship is like, are you normally open etc , I think it's a bit harsh yeah because I don't think it's that weird so to comment is a little bit mean

SweeetFannyAdams · 15/06/2026 14:31

Yabu to use a word that makes you sound 3 years old.

Nothing wrong with his choice of gym clothing though.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/06/2026 14:31

A vest in the gym is standard for men and women, they're not at all weird or noticeable in any way.

I hope he laughed back at you and wore it anyway.

Did he ask your opinion?

You haven't said.

Dermatologically · 15/06/2026 14:34

I'd be a bit pissed off if I put a vest on for the gym to make me comfortable in the heat and my DH told me my gym fit was 'funny' and 'icky'.

That kind of uninvited opinion when someone is dressing to be practical is really tedious. Leave the guy alone.

durdledoris · 15/06/2026 14:40

Be pleased you have got a dh who takes care of himself, not all of them do! I don't care what other people wear in the gym.

SweeetFannyAdams · 15/06/2026 14:41

patooties · 15/06/2026 13:47

Then don't go to a place where people exercise if you're so adverse to a perfectly normal biological function.

Bobosh · 15/06/2026 14:42

Gym vests are the devil’s work. Basketball vests, even more so.

Honeyhonay · 15/06/2026 14:42

How would you feel if he said the same to you? If you wear shorts it’s icky and he prefers trousers?

Cosyblankets · 15/06/2026 14:43

Can't say I've ever noticed what the blokes in my gym wear. I'm there to work out. Wonder what they say about my outfit. And I can only imagine the response if I tried to tell my husband what to wear.

Seriously? I don't even notice people wearing sleeveless things in the gym, it's so normal. What is it you find so awful about them?

I hate those baggy low armpit basketball vests. They just look saggy and horrid. This is all theoretical btw. I don’t go to the gym and have never seen it in the flesh actually. I’m just talking about photos! Maybe they look great in real life

gannett · 15/06/2026 14:50

Obviously OP is being ridiculous and childish (nothing her husband wears could possibly be as jarring as an adult using the word "icky").

It's quite sad though - there's lots of research that shows people (men and women) are put off by exercise because they feel self-conscious in exercise clothes, which will often be more revealing and/or tighter than normal clothes because that's more comfortable. And it's attitudes like the OP's that make them self-conscious.

Sleeveless vests are absolutely bog-standard exercise wear for both men and women.

Exactly.
And everyone should wear, within reason, what they find comfortable. Why is it ok for me to wear a sleeveless gym top but not a man?
I don't particularly like the fact that some companies now have their gym instructors in practically bra and knickers for women, and baggy shorts and loose top for men (when those companies used to have similar outfits for both sexes), especially now we have sweat wicking fabrics so we can be covered but comfortable, but it's up to the individual what they wear, as long as they wipe down the mat.
