Harsh to say DP’s gym outfit is icky?

Wifey22 · 15/06/2026 13:41

DP is in decent shape, but I told him I found his outfit for the gym funny when he went on lunch.

Trainers/socks/shorts - normally obviously. But he then wore a Nike vest with it 🙃

I said I find vests icky and prefer t shirts.

YANBU - agree men wearing vests to gym is a bit icky
YABU - I don’t see any issue with it

You can’t help how you feel and yet there will be some women who love a sweaty man in a vest.

gannett · 15/06/2026 14:51

Bobosh · 15/06/2026 14:48

I hate those baggy low armpit basketball vests. They just look saggy and horrid. This is all theoretical btw. I don’t go to the gym and have never seen it in the flesh actually. I’m just talking about photos! Maybe they look great in real life

So basically your contribution to this thread is as valuable as me rocking up to a gardening thread (I don't garden) and telling everyone that I think gardening gloves are ugly.

SummerInSun · 15/06/2026 14:55

Out of curiosity do you only feel that way about men’s sleeveless tops for the gym, or also women in singlet tops too? I have a drawl of Sweaty Betty singlet tops for the gym - shallow as it is, I like being able to see my shoulder and arm muscles when I’m doing weights etc

Yes, probably. Am I not allowed an opinion? It is not a topic that I have given any thought to until this thread but I added my point of view anyway to this very important subject. You are free to ignore it of course!

topcat2014 · 15/06/2026 14:59

I look like some kind of puny dweeb with a fat tummy in a vest so I wear t shirts.

If I had the size I would wear a vest

ClearFruit · 15/06/2026 15:05

YABU for using the word 'icky'.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 15/06/2026 15:35

You were unreasonable for the word "icky" all by itself, but then you compounded it by complaining about a perfectly normal item of gym wear.

Ineffable23 · 15/06/2026 15:41

I hate wearing anything other than a vest to the gym, don't what fabric scrunching round my shoulders/back when I'm doing weights. On that basis I wouldn't want to judge anyone else for it.

But I will say I'm not a fan when men wear vests that have such enormous arm holes and are so baggy it shows their entire torso, in the same way I'm also not really a fan of women exercising in shorts the size of knickers and bras. I do recognise that is my own problem to deal with though, ultimately. I don't care at a swimming pool so I do recognise my illogic.

Everleigh13 · 15/06/2026 15:44

I don’t have a problem with anybody wearing vests to the gym. Never really get why some people find pretty standard clothes to be ‘icky’ or gross or whatever. Just don’t wear it yourself if you don’t like it.

AnnieApples · 15/06/2026 15:44

I’d laugh if my husband wore a vest to the gym. Complete hypocrisy as that’s all I wear.

ConstanzeMozart · 15/06/2026 15:55

I know what you mean, OP. I don't like the look of men in vests, especially the ones with the enormous armholes so you can see their bare side-flesh practically down to the waist.
I wear vest tops for the gym, but I don't think I'm being hypocritical as I don't and wouldn't wear that kind!

BauhausOfEliott · 15/06/2026 16:07

That's literally what vests are for.

In any case, it's none of your business what he chooses to wear to the gym. If my boyfriend critiqued my gym wear like that I'd tell him to grow up and fuck off.

Weeellokthen · 15/06/2026 16:12

I'm with you op 😂No man in my family would be permitted to wear a wife beater vest. They make me 🤑no matter how fit they looked.

If you want to wear a vest, wear a vest! You will never spend time on your death bed wishing you'd looked socially acceptable more often.

category12 · 15/06/2026 16:19

Would you be perfectly OK with him telling you "your outfit is awful", just before you went somewhere?

I bet you'd feel like shit. Treat him like you'd like to be treated yourself.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/06/2026 18:37

But why? Do you secretly laugh at all men in vests at the gym?

It seems so mean to mock men for wearing what is perfectly normal and proper gymwear. I feel sad for men, which is a new experience for me.

MargotLovesTom · 15/06/2026 19:50

Wifey22 · 15/06/2026 14:28

I’m not sure how anyone has got the impression I told him what he can or can’t wear, that’s not what I said is it.

Well, you were pretty negative about something that doesn't affect you. Telling him you prefer t-shirts? And? 🤷‍♀️
He's not dressing for you when he goes to the gym!

I never want to see anyone’s damp armpit hair 🤮

Then don't look! Imagine a bloke telling a woman to shave her armpits or hide them! Armpit hair is natural.

Retunue · 16/06/2026 19:13

Yes, I think any man who does not wear precisely what I tell him in accordance with my specific preferences is deeply unreasonable.

PeoplesNet · 16/06/2026 19:17

Speakerof · 15/06/2026 13:51

I think it's gross when people have their armpits out in the gym, sweating on everything. I'm also well aware that's my issue and people have a right to wear what's most comfortable for them to wear and that gym equipment gets sweaty anyway, so I keep that to myself.

Haha what about head, face and hair sweat? Focusing on armpits sounds irrational tbh. And palm sweat! Ahaha I would have thought you'd be more worried about all the germs from people's hands.

TyotyaKlava · 16/06/2026 19:47

I agree men wearing vests a bit icky. However I can’t wear anything other than vests as I’m 45 and get quite hot whilst exercising
im not sweaty and quite slim but feel hot flushes when working out and it’s unpleasant in best of days but when wearing something that covers my arms would not feel nice at all

TyotyaKlava · 16/06/2026 19:49

So its weird that someone would wear a gym vest to go to a gym. Be proud he does his best to keep in shape.
