AIBU to think this was well deserved?

Kate can glower at people as much as she wants but the monarchy is a rotten institution and people are getting more and more annoyed by it

@MrsShawnHatosy
It’s been announced that Prince George will attend Eton in September, which doesn’t help with the public perception of them being overprivileged

Which school would’ve helped the public perception of them being over privileged?

A state school. Genuinely, a state school, like politicians do. Even if they themselves went to the top boarding schools, all the cabinet and shadow cabinet take the same position, their dcs go to state schools. (It’s been news worthy for the few who didn’t, even when we had the cabinet full of Eaton and Westminster old boys.)

George will have the same job if he gets straight 9s or a mixture of 6s and 7s, the quality of his education really won’t make any difference to his future prospects.

Obviously they never would, William really has no interest in a more modern monarchy and that would be shockingly unthinkable for him to do, whereas if you read the Swedish royals were sending their children to a local state school you’d just think “yep, sounds about right.”

My God, can you imagine the bullying he’d get.
Have you read the comments on here - and elsewhere - about how ghastly the monarchy, why don’t they just go, the Russian and French revolutionaries had the right idea etc.
Children would hear their parents talking like that and take it out on George.
Or maybe you think a bit of bullying would do him good and take him down a peg or two.

Unfortunately it most probably cheaper to send him to Eaton for his own safety!

No, don’t assume it’s all violent and evil in a state school yet lovely and supportive in private (let’s face it, his mother was bullied in at her first very expensive school, which failed to deal with it and she had to move).

Obviously they’ve missed their window and should have sent in at year 7, when he could have potentially been just one of the new children, in the same way the prime minsters over the years have sent their dcs to state schools and trusted their choices didn’t lead to bullying.

it would have signalled a more modern approach, but for all the spin and “Kensington palace insiders” commenting that William wants to modernise things, he’s really not showing that with the way he lives and works.

(it is a pity, I had high hopes when William was young.)

perlana · 16/06/2026 19:18

I'd love if George climbed out the window and escaped Eton with some of his equally majestic/posh mates. That'd be an education for them, surviving out in the English countryside without Royal Funds to prop him up. Character forming.

As pp said, his education is only for life experience, and I doubt he will get REAL life experience in the hallowed halls of Eton. His A level results won't matter, because he doesn't need them to be King does he, and his future is guaranteed. Poor sod.

38thparallel · 16/06/2026 19:19

I’m not saying it is - obviously there is bullying in all sectors unfortunately. However there are more likely to be very anti monarchist views at state school for which he would be an easy target.
Personally I think sneering at people for their class, whether up or down, is cowardly and pointless - but people do it.

I feel sympathy in a way, because they’ve been used as shields by their family. But they benefit massively.

They benefit massively? I disagree. They live a sheltered and materially privileged life, sure, but they also live in a goldfish bowl with disengaged, often absent parents and extremely reduced choices in life. I was watching George at QEII’s funeral and thinking how utterly abusive this system is towards a child in his position. He is a little boy with no life experience, and he knows exactly what he will grow up to be and do, what he will wear and how he will spend his time, right down to where his body will lie in state and where it will be buried. It must be stultifying and panic-inducing, frankly. Like sitting on your own coffin on the way to Tyburn.

The whole culture and system of royalty is diseased. No wonder that family consistently produces damaged people with severe emotional problems.

Absolutely agree. I said upthread that I dont feel royal life is fair to the people within it either - you can see the damage it does. I guess it is a blessing if the occupants of the positions are a bit thick and cant imagine any other way of life - for someone with a lively brain, it must be horrendous.

Would you accept people shouting abuse at your children? Why should she then ?

This!

celticnations · 17/06/2026 01:01

That's a shame on the weans.

Adults, aye but not kiddies.

MrSchubertWhiskers · 17/06/2026 07:02

I agree children should be protected but hearing "not my king" and "boo" is hardly abuse, is it?

The wealth is unpalatable.

But it’s the parading through the street in solid gold carriages while children starve that I can’t stand

Oh FFS. Where are these starving kids? And if you find one then report the parents straight away. Are they wandering the streets like urchins begging for food?

People have posted links with actual facts about the number of people living in food poverty.

But obviously feel free to continue believing only what you can see in your vicinity and completely ignore anything outside of your immediate view.

And there are calls to cut benefits further because people are apparently freeloading in massive numbers. At least Labour removed the 2 child benefit cap which was hugely criticised and will, alone cost more than the RF does.
I can understand the issues people have with the Royal family, but concentrating on the (comparatively) small amount they/the parade costs rather than putting energy into counteracting the ongoing trend to demonise benefits claimants seems counterproductive to me.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/06/2026 08:31

A friend had a knock on the door there was a policeman and the head of our local posh boarding school. One of their pupils had escaped and was hiding under her DDs bed.

Who are the booers and why are they booing? Trooping the Colour is on one of our big traditions, attracting big crowds. Anyone who is not happy with it is free to fuck off

Exactly… why even turn up and spoil it for everyone else

Yes I’m sure if the Royals were given the opportunity to give it all up and go and live quiet, private lives earning their own living they would jump at it.

Do you think what a shame the suffragettes ever turned up and spoilt it ?

italianlondongirl · 17/06/2026 09:36

Where’s your source for this?

They certainly marched in coronation year to raise awareness but it was the week before the actual coronation

Really? I’m not sure I agree. They would never be fully private, but they def have a deal with the devil, they def feed into the exposure. Other royal families manage a lighter touch.

I live in an area of Bradford that's been described as 'deprived'. The kids near me look well fed and healthy. I've never seen a starving chlid in real life because I'd do something about it.How many 'starving' kids live near you? This emotive language was BPs catchphrase when bringing in breakfast clubs. It's misleading and over emotive language.

Oh sorry, there are so many supporters on here I took it at face value. Well then I agree, they definitely feel it’s a price worth paying - it’s mainly easy work, if a little dull and intrusive!
