To expect the owner of the dog who stole DD's sandwich from her plate...

while having lunch at an outdoor cafe' to at least offer to pay for another one.

She was sitting at the table next to ours and she knew the dog would do that as when he got close and we stroke him she screamed 'he'll eat your lunch!' a second later the food was gone.
WTF did she expect we do?

If he steals food, why on Earth doesn't she keep him away from other people who are eating? It's entirely her fault and of course she should have bought a new sandwich. Did she even apologise?

TheOriginalXENA · 23/06/2008 21:42

of course she should have bought another one!!

Ecmo · 23/06/2008 21:42

was it a spaniel?

was it me

Hulababy · 23/06/2008 21:42

If she can't control her dog, she should ntot e taking it to public places like this, especially where people might be eating.

Hulababy · 23/06/2008 21:43

And yes, she should have bought your DD another sandwich, or offered to pay for it.

onepieceoflollipop · 23/06/2008 21:44

What did she do after the dog snatched it?Did she run off in embarrassment? YANBU by the way.

cheesesarnie · 23/06/2008 21:45

.agree with everyone else-dog shouldnt have been near people eating and she should have got new sandwhich.

Spidermama · 23/06/2008 21:46

PMSL! I LOVE dogs for this very reason.
But yes, she should have bought you another. Of course. Did she know her dog had been successful.

no she should have paid, grrrrrrrrrr

had a similar experience in a park was sat with a friend and we each had a toddler and anew baby with us, we had laid out a picnic blanket and were having a lovely lunch when a huge dog came and trampled all over our food, eating some and slobbering on the rest also scaring the toddlers the owner just laughed...

expatinscotland · 23/06/2008 21:46

YANBU.

what a rude, inconsiderate person.

lucky it wasn't my picnic, 4mad. because i always take my Lekki walking stick on picnics, it's permanently in our picnic box.

any dog comes too near because teh rude arsehole owner can't control their own dog and it's getting the stick from me.

Shitemum · 23/06/2008 21:49

I would have sent DD over to her table with instructions to take whatever she fancied off the woman's plate and screamed 'She'll eat your lunch !!!!' just as she was helping herself...

PippiCalzelunghe · 23/06/2008 21:55

Ecom no it wasn't you unless you travel miles for a latte in the park !

I'm not upsetb with the dog, that's what dogs do given the chance. dog was on a lead but when she let him free he went straight for it - he had been watching us for a while, clkever sod! yes she knew he got it because she asked me that before she turned and left. she did apologise and I say 'not to worry dogs are dogs' but still no offer.

dd did not go hungry, luckily for once I had cash on me and was not frightned one bit, just surprised. big dog btw.

I like shitemum's solution.

Rachmumoftwo · 23/06/2008 22:09

It's not what dogs do you know, not all dogs. I honestly believe that my dog wouldn't have done that. The worst thing she would have done is come up to you and looked pretty until you fed her. But I would have called her away if that had happened. The owner should have replaced the food, or at least offered.

hayley2u · 23/06/2008 22:21

bless the dog tough can see it in a comical way. but it is bad that did not offer,.
my dad dog a pain like that eats dinner when not loking or has een know to eat baby food ew

Blondilocks · 23/06/2008 22:26

Eugh, IMO a dog shouldn't be that near to food in the first place.

Ecmo · 23/06/2008 22:26

my dog would have done it too. But he has a rather nasty medical condition which means he would have regurgitated it several seconds later. Luckily for you this dog didnt have this condition or the woman might have handed the sandwich back!
I wouldn't let my food grabbing monster dog off within 100yds of a loose sandwich.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 24/06/2008 07:33

She should have paid for another one.

We were once going to have a picnic and we were paddling in nearby stream. All the food was still in carrier bag on our picnic blanket. A dog still on a lead came and cocked its leg up our bag and the owner just stood there and made no attempt to pull it off. He seemed very unbothered when I went steaming up to rant at him.

Yuck! My dog (spaniel) would have taken it in a heartbeat. Which is why I would never take her out where people would be likely to be eating and let her free.

merryberry · 24/06/2008 08:14

yes she should. ds1 lost a piece of cake to a dog at hampstead's caff once and that owner was mortified and bought another one pronto.
