To expect the owner of the dog who stole DD's sandwich from her plate...

while having lunch at an outdoor cafe' to at least offer to pay for another one.

She was sitting at the table next to ours and she knew the dog would do that as when he got close and we stroke him she screamed 'he'll eat your lunch!' a second later the food was gone.
WTF did she expect we do?

My dog has done this once - on a beach, and I was mortified!
I apologised a lot and bought the little girl an ice cream to say sorry...

This is why I don't take my dog to cafes! (And now why she is always on the lead on the beach if anyone's eating!!)

Maybe she didn't have any money and ran away in embarrassment?

Threadwormm · 24/06/2008 11:06

My dog once stole a loaf of bread from a fisherman who was using it for bait. I went all the way home and got a replacement loaf and cam e all the way back again.

Of course she should have bought another sandwich the silly woman.

Saymyname · 24/06/2008 11:07

Bit of a no brainer this, of course YANBU.

I wouldn't take my dogs to a cafe anyway, yeeeuch.

PippiCalzelunghe · 24/06/2008 11:34

it'a an outdoor one in the park so dogs are wellcome.

no the woman wasn't poor trust me.

kerrymum I didn't ask. I did show her I wasn't upset, I thought it was embarassing enough for her. That is not the point. I think she should have offered.

I am not even upset, just surprised at people's manners.

God my mum's dogs do this. It drives me up the bloody wall
Recently she was having a little tea party in her garden and one of her bloody dogs leapt up at the table and made to grab the sandwiches. I managed to shout at it loudly enough and mentioned this to my stepdad. His attitude was "no harm done'
I said that now there was dog spit on the food and that I didn't want dog spit on my sandwiches.
Grr this pisses me off so much.
There are many dog owners who are lazy gits.

PippiCalzelunghe · 24/06/2008 11:41

fiofio so you should, it was hilarious ! the dog was staring at us for ages. I bet he had plan it all to the minute.

on another note, I think I was well nice. it was a big dog who lept on a table with 2 2yo and a 1yo and a baby. no one batted an eyelid and the kids were all relaxed. someone else would have given the woman a right mouthfull.

I could never take my dog anywhere where people are eating because he would do the same (spaniel = stomch on legs).

ingles2 · 24/06/2008 11:49

you are so not U...
what a rude rude woman.. (I bet she was secretly mortified though)
My dog would never take food but she will sit at your feet gazing sorrowfully and whimpering under her breath. We just ignore her

ingles2 · 24/06/2008 11:50

and mines a spaniel too

I think she was secretly mortified tbh maybe so much that she ust wanted to get away. I'm giving benefit of doubt.

I agree she should have offered to but another one, but maybe she didn't have any money on her.

bruxeur · 24/06/2008 13:04

Caution - DA alert - she apologised, and you said "not to worry" - that's end of conversation, isn't it?

You've let her off the hook, and I wouldn't expect (in your place) someone to go on and offer to replace the sand wich.

expatinscotland · 24/06/2008 16:17

gross, kitty!

my mom's got a pal who has a rank dog like that.

she refuses to eat in that woman's house after one time she saw the dog put its face on the buffet table and like a few of the canapes.

hurl.

if you don't have control over your dog you really shouldn't take it out and let it roam around people who are eating.

colditz · 24/06/2008 16:21

Any dog sticks it's face on my plate and I'd slap its nose.

expatinscotland · 24/06/2008 16:22

same here, cold.

i don't see anything cute or funny about dog spit on my food.

BettySpaghetti · 24/06/2008 16:25

If a dog and eaten DS's sandwich he would have gone crazy with tears (nothing comes between DS and his food).

I think the woman was really out of order not offering to buy a replacement.

It reminds me if an incident years ago -DP and I were in our local pub beer garden one sunny afternoon and couldn't work out why a couple with a baby in a pushchair were giving us dirty looks and seemed to be talking about us.

We later noticed that the pub dog, who had been lying under our table, was happily chewing up a baby toy that he'd obviously stolen from the baby. The couple had presumed that he was our dog as he was by our feet.

mistlethrush · 24/06/2008 16:28

I agree, as a dog owner - not acceptable either by dog or owner. My dog knows that this is quite out of the question so wouldn't dream of doing it, even though she would love to eat whatever...

Best story of items going missing - was having tea with fresh scones when I was younger, at home with my parents. Pet hens were round about. Sudden flurry of wings and our smallest was up on the table, grabbed a scone and flew off with it. At least this was our hen though!

ingles2 · 24/06/2008 16:41

LOL mistlethrush... my dh was disgusted that one of our hens (a whopping big maran) jumped up onto the garden table the other day and pinched a digestive biscuit out of his hand...serves him right for being so dreamy

mistlethrush · 24/06/2008 16:55

Ingles but this was an itsybitsytiny bantam and the scone must have weighed quiet a large proportion of her body weight
