while having lunch at an outdoor cafe' to at least offer to pay for another one.

She was sitting at the table next to ours and she knew the dog would do that as when he got close and we stroke him she screamed 'he'll eat your lunch!' a second later the food was gone.
WTF did she expect we do?

I would have brought another one (I don't have a dog but if I did) ykwim

bruxeur what should I have said in your opinion? should I have started screaming and raging? Should have I demanded she bought me a replacement?
of course I said 'not to worry'... I thought it was embarassing and bad enough for her as it was than me adding more shame (the cafe' was packed).

No need to scream or rage, but a simple, 'Excuse me, but I really think you should provide my child with a replacement for the lunch your dog ate.'

And the complain to the management.

Who cares if she's ashamed or mortified because she's a dozy bint who can't control her animal?

EPIS

I have emailed you on the KKaddy.

expatinscotland · 24/06/2008 18:51

Aw, I was hoping for a free sandwich, Bree .

bruxeur · 24/06/2008 21:14

What expat said.

There is a middle ground between "not to worry" and "screaming and raging".

And it is occupied by the phrase "that was a ham cob with no mayo, thanks", with a smile.

bruxeur · 24/06/2008 21:18

Or maybe a cheese bap.

*hedges bets in event of Judaism

Anyway. If someone told me not to worry, I...

...wouldn't.

But that's politeness tennis for you, play it wrong and and you're left sandwich bereft and fuming.

PippiCalzelunghe · 24/06/2008 21:58

bruxeur there's some truth in that I might concede.

I'm not saying you're BU, Pippi, just playing DA as I said.

I still think she should have offered to replace - and your courteous response either gave the sandwich-grabbing-dog-pimp an out, or merely confused her so much that she just left.
