How much to drink on a weeknight

Pandaghost · 10/06/2026 23:26

I went out for "a drink" with 4 friends last night. We are all between 35 and 45 and have children (eldest out of all kids is 11, youngest is 1. Most have 2 children).
1 person drove. 4 drank.
1 had one wine and couldn't have anymore because of work tomorrow.
1 had 2 wines.
2 had a bottle of wine each. 1 had this and a further vodka and coke (unsure if single or double).
All said they felt fine today (except the driver who had a headache which is clearly unrelated). All have busy jobs working either full time or 4 days a week and were in work today.
My question is how much would/could you drink on a midweek night knowing you had work and children to sort out and genuinely feel ok? I was the person who had one wine and couldn't handle anymore on a week night!

Nothing at all now I'm nearly fifty. But when in your age bracket I could definitely have downed a bottle and another vodka or two afterwards.

Flannelfeet · 11/06/2026 08:25

Zero. But I do enjoy a few gins on a friday and Saturday. I hate to feel crap during the week so I dont bother, gone are the days of having a few glasses of red during the week and feeling great in the morning, i feel shite after drinking now so can't be bothered with it.

Thebinisrightthere · 11/06/2026 08:28

No more than 2 glasses of wine and even then I'd probably regret the 2nd one! I went out with some friends on a weekday evening recently, I drank maybe 2 wines, the rest were still at it when I left. Only 1 was a bit rough the next day & had to go back to bed before work after sorting out her teens (luckily she only works round the corner!)

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 11/06/2026 08:35

2 glasses of wine if not driving. Anyone drinking a bottle plus and then more is probably very used to drinking that amount. We had friends who certainly did this at weekends and were always drinking in the week. The more they drink, the easier it gets to drink more and function but we do know it’s a problem!

Larrythecatforpm · 11/06/2026 08:42

Nothing, i can’t drink anything these days without feeling like crap for a week afterwards. Easier to stay sober. That said bottle of wine each when they’re supposed to be supervising their kids? Confused

TheKeatingFive · 11/06/2026 08:46

3 glasses or so no problem, wouldn't feel it the next day so long as it was with food. I'm 45.

Ineedanewsofa · 11/06/2026 08:47

Can’t drink anything if I need to be up and functioning early the next day, one glass is enough to mess up my sleep since turning 40!
I also do a lot of driving for work so I never drink the night before if I know I’m driving the next day, it’s not worth it.
Can easily sink half a bottle/a bottle of rose on a Friday night however…

mandysocks · 11/06/2026 08:53

I WFH so tbh the fact I was working wouldn’t impact my decision too much but I wouldn’t drink much mid week, I don’t usually drink mid week at all (but love a drink on the weekend before I sound too pious!), I probably wouldn’t have more than 2 glasses.

Peonies12 · 11/06/2026 08:54

If I was eating I could have 2 glasses of wine. But also very weird you kept track of everyone’s drinks. Who cares, as long as not driving - their decision!

Oh no, im not judging! Honestly just curious because I was dubious having one on a work night and there were a few surprised looks (I used to really let my hair down pre kids) but I just dont think I could survive a morning with kids and a day in work after a bottle of wine and a vodka!

You're not judging? Well......the first thing I thought is "what a judgy opening post". I guess I was wrong, then

boohoomootoo · 11/06/2026 08:59

I’m 50. Nowadays I don’t really like going out on work nights. If I do, I’d rarely have more than one glass of wine. In my early 30s pre-kids I could work the day after drinking a bottle. Those days are long gone!

SomeOtherUser · 11/06/2026 09:03

If I were going out to see friends during the week (which doesn't happen often, maybe a few times a year), I would have a few pints of lager without blinking. I wouldn't feel great the next day though!

BEAchDays2 · 11/06/2026 09:24

Two pints.

Wiaa · 11/06/2026 09:26

Well if you've slightly changed the info then i think you might have been out with me!! I can confirm i had a bottle of wine and was totally fine the next morning. I don't have to drive so no issues there. I think in the group of us (7) 5 of us had some alcohol mostly 1 or 2 and me and another women shared 2 bottles of wine. As a general rule me and my wine sharing friend drink much more than the rest of the group both in terms of frequency and amounts

takealettermsjones · 11/06/2026 10:15

Mildly funny that the driver was the one with the headache. 😆

wishfulthinking25 · 10/06/2026 23:37

Not sure but you certainly wouldn’t be my friend anymore if you were counting the drinks I had on a night out and judging me on mumsnet the next day, that’s for sure!

As I've already said, I wasn't judging. Everyone offered to get drinks when they went to the bar so the drinks were part of the conversation ("I'm getting another wine, does anyone want anything?") I wasnt sat making a tally chart 🙄
If anything, I felt slightly judged for being a lightweight after saying i couldn't have anymore. I have the youngest of the children and haven't really been out or had a drink since they were born and obviously not whilst pregnant. Not judged in a bad way, but a few "why dont you have another" type comments. Not in a peer pressure way but encouraging me to have a night off type of way. Im not sure im explaining myself well.
I was asking because I genuinely feel like I would struggle if I had to get up and function and id had more than one and wanted to see if that was a common train of thought or if I was the anomaly. It really isnt as deep as me counting my friends drinks so I could anonymously insult them or imply they've got a problem.

I drink beer but know I'll feel off my game next day on more than 2 pints. TBH one will make me feel a bit jaded, so I often don't bother at all and stick to soda water.

Ibi · 11/06/2026 15:42

I meet up with a group of friends once a month or so and we tend to try and leave work early so we are in the pub by 1700-1800. I can easily have a couple of aperitifs and then wine with dinner and a few after (probably well over a bottle sometimes). Because we start early, we are usually in bed by 2300, so can get a good night sleep. We try and do this on a Thursday as a few of us wfh on a Friday so I don’t need to be up until about 0700 which makes a big difference and I don’t feel my performance is impaired.

I don’t think anyone took their children with them on the night out!!

LethargeMarg · 11/06/2026 16:02

In my 20s I could go clubbing and still get up for work (as a teacher as well!?!)
these days a small glass of wine (125ml) would be the max.
about ten years ago in my late 30s I had a bottle of wine on a work night and spent the next day with the most horrendous hangover while at work…kept having to run to the loo to be sick - never again!!

LeedsLoiner · 11/06/2026 16:12

My personal rule is no drinking on a "school night" - unless it's a particular event like going to a concert or someone's birthday. Otherwise alcohol only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Holidays of course are excluded from this rule ! 🍹

dingdangdongdo · 11/06/2026 16:17

I would be fine with two large glasses of wine but anymore and I start to wake up in the night thirsty and then I’m tired the next day.

My brother on the other hand can chug a crate of beer and be surfing at 6Am.
He’s 50s I’m 40s.

Silverbirchleaf · 11/06/2026 16:21

If I wasn’t driving, I’d have 1-3 glasses. A whole bottle is a lot on any day of the week.

EverythingGolden · 11/06/2026 16:32

One or two glasses max but usually none these days. Even in my heyday I didn’t usually drink during the week because it wasn’t worth the stress the next day but could happily have a bottle and a half on a Friday.

Backedoffhackedoff · 11/06/2026 16:34

I don’t drink anymore but when I did I could easily do more than ghe bottle of wine women. Once I had 9 negronis 🙈

i would feel awful the next day but it wouldn’t really bother me once in a while, you just push through.
