To think it’s odd to tell your kids where they were conceived?

I’ve always had a love of Italy and even went on to study Italian at university. My mum recently and rather casually dropped into conversation that I was conceived in Rome!

My parents had been in Rome for two weeks that summer.

I think it’s deeply weird to tell your kids yes.

But mentioning it casually to your adult DC like that, meh.

In Ireland there was a baby boom after the pope came to Ireland in 1979. A lot of people told me their parents told me they were conceived about then so no apparently not such a strange thing for parents to tell their children 😅

OhThePotential · Yesterday 23:19

I think what you’ve described is fine. Its hardly likely to traumatise anyone.

What I think is weird is that there are now some people old enough to watch their own birth on youtube.

ElvirRamcic · Yesterday 23:20

When they’re adults, without the graphic content, I don’t really see the issue.

For the record, our bedroom, after my work Christmas party.

I think it's ok when you're older to know this. I know what you mean though.. it's a bit....🤭

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 23:24

Ick. Well, some people name their kids for it. And proudly tell you why India got her name!

Floppyearedlab · Yesterday 23:28

My ex's parents used to do this. Proudly announce at the table that his sister was conceived in their holiday chalet.
Then reminisce how he was conceived in their first apartment. Then laughing when we looked mildly nauseous and saying 'it's sex, you do the same thing'.

SoftAsSteel · Yesterday 23:28

My dad sent me a picture of the ship I was conceived on. He’s in his 80’s and I’m in my 60’s!!

yeah cheers for that dad!

Although admittedly I did find it interesting. At least they didn’t name me after it!!

I dunno, I think "Rome" or "Manchester" is fine, but "up against the wardrobe in the back bedroom" maybe not.

Mine were all concieved in a fertility clinic, they all know the story (dc1s was actually a very traumatic procedure they dont know that bit) I think editted truths are ok.

My parents always blame my conception on my dad's cousin as they concieved me accidentally at the cousin's wedding (too many white wines apparently). The cousin and wife (my godparents) still mention this story occasionally on their wedding anniversary I probably grew up thinking it was normal to be told although I have no idea where my siblings were concieved.

She told you this when you were an adult? YABU.

If you think what your mother told you was beyond the pale, I was conceived when a fertility specialist put my father’s “washed” sperm into my mother’s uterus. 😂

That's how Brooklyn Beckham got his name as he was conceived there

AnonymityAnonymity · Today 05:49

Yes i agree OP. I think it's really weird. And I think it's even weirder to name the child after the place they were conceived.

I think it makes it sound as though the only time the parents had sex was the time a baby was the result. And that the rest of the time they never had sex.

Poor Brooklyn! His parents told the whole world about this. That's not the best of starts if you want to be a private person.

My baby was conceived the same way and I don't think there is any harm in her knowing this when she's an adult. Just shows how wanted she was and is!

Thepeopleversuswork · Today 06:08

It’s really cringe. I had a boyfriend years ago who had been named after the place he was conceived a la Brooklyn Beckham.

In his case though the dad turned out to be an abusive alcoholic and the parents split.

What was obviously intended at the time as a romantic nod to his conception is forever associated with an abusive dad getting his end away in a low rent seaside holiday campsite.

Nasty.

It's how I got my name too (not Brooklyn). My name isn't super obviously a place name (even though there are a number of cities/towns/areas with the name).

And, yes, my parents did tell me :)

Goblinmusic · Today 06:11

I think it's fine.

TheRealWhacker · Today 06:51

Pretty gross, nobody wants to think about their parents having sex. I think the only time it’s fine is if they were conceived via fertility treatment.

allhailtheeyeballsinthesky · Today 06:58

Im an unexpected honeymoon baby, born 9 months later, no doubt about my conception, mind you I'm not called Grasmere thankfully

MargaretThursday · Today 08:04

I don't think dropped casually into conversation as an adult anything to find odd about at all.
I was conceived in a tent on my parent's back lawn when they decided it was too hot to sleep inside so put the tent up and slept out!
I think I was told that as a teen and never thought anything of it other than vaguely amusing.

If they'd made a huge thing when you were small insisting that you must love everything Italian because that was where you were conceived, then that would be odd, but not what you said.

FannyNesbet · Today 08:05

I know a lot of parents that give this info and I always found it to be ick but I'm quite prude. Good to be in prudish company!

Presumably Romeo was in the back of an Alfa 164…😄

ByRoseBiscuit · Today 09:32

Telling you as an adult, when there is a link because you love Italy, is not that odd to me.

Clawdy · Today 09:42

My friend’s mum told her she was conceived on a Cornwall holiday, in a hammock! Too much info, I thought, but my friend loved it!
