John Lewis pushing this advert on my social media. Do they support oppression of women or is this a symbol of women’s right to choose .

I saw that and I was like “WTAF”!!! Such a good British brand - stooping to new lows in the process of increasing their customer base.

Sell clothing that promotes women shrinking into the shadows - reprehensible. Also: if anyone who buys this is actually looking for abayas I’m sure they’ll go to their trusted clothing shop of choice that is embedded in their community.

@RumPidgeon JL has extremely strong diversity & inclusion aims as part of its brand.
Also what's wrong with a retailer extending its customer base?

The young Muslim woman I know who has chosen to dress like this is a feisty single teacher in her twenties. She is loved by kids of all backgrounds at her inner city school and is one of the most assertive people I know.

She is from a liberal Muslim family. Her dad didn’t want her to wear the hijab, and her older brother is actively embarrassed of her wearing it. She absolutely did it for herself as she said it made her feel closer to Allah. Who are we to argue with that?

Yeah sure.

Really, because nuns have chosen that lifestyle and Muslim women are born into it and have no real choice.

RTFT Some wearers of the hijab are wearing it from choice.

viques · Yesterday 17:16

My local JL has a display of hijabs and scarves designed to be worn by Muslim women. I am not Muslim so am not in their demographic for these items, but then again I am not in their demographic for maternity bras, mens boxer shorts, baby buggies, school polo shirts, running shoes and gas fired barbecue sets either. John Lewis probably researches the goods they sell and it doesn’t matter to them that different people buy different items.

Not in all cases. My daughter was born into a predominantly atheist family, with one Baptist and one Catholic grandmother. She chose to convert to Islam when she was 28.

Can up randomly

Came up randomly for me too. On Mumsnet.

godmum56 · Yesterday 17:18

why are you not raving and M and S who have been pushing "modest dressing" for years?

MistressoftheDarkSide · Yesterday 17:19

Netcurtainnelly · Yesterday 16:55

That's quite a worrying Picture all in black too. Very drab. Do the men dress like that thought not.

I take it you've never met a Goth then?

Ginmonkeyagain · Yesterday 17:19

Ahh is see we have moved on to "all women who make different choices to me are oppressed" as well as a strange side order of Royston Vasey-esque racism. Good, good.

And Next. I bought my daughter a burkini from there a few months ago.

Yeah sure.

Ah, well you have shown your true colours here. What ignorance!

Some women will be forced to wear it. In Afghanistan, Iran now. But saying that all the women who use the hijab are forced to wear it by men is just stupid.

They wear ankle length robes.

I don’t know maybe showing my age it’s not what you expect on a random John Lewis advert in the past. Especially as I’m
not in the market for one. I’m not really sure but personally I see it as misogynistic dress to control women. Ok no face cover but everything else is covered.Although seems others don’t agree and feel I am in wrong to even notice it.

I don’t like it either, but department stores sell all sorts of things that pigeonhole or limit women. Stiletto heels hardly further women’s rights either, but lots of women, including me, occasionally, wear them,

That’s not really the point I am making here but ok!

I know the point you’re making - it’s a business decision - I was simply stating that I like that business decision as a dog owner!

Skinnysaluki · Yesterday 17:25

God this thread is dreary, all the islamophobes having a field day even more than usual

BigOldBlobsy · Yesterday 17:26

Ginmonkeyagain · Yesterday 16:22

Proof that racism makes people lose all critical thinking skills.

Some of the people on here who are saying that Islam is the only religion that oppresses women clearly didn’t look at the history of most current religions.

GimmieABreakOr3 · Yesterday 17:27

RumPidgeon · Yesterday 17:05

My husband said that but Nike is an international brand - John Lewis is British. Aimed at British clients in the UK.

Edited

Are you saying that because JL is a British brand, that they can only cater and be sold to British people?

Sezane is a French brand that I’ve bought from - along with many other brands from other countries - so what’s your point hun?

You can throw insults about ignorance but that doesn't make you right. I believe their choices are based on culture and upbringing and yes, we have influences in the west too, like women "choose" to shave their legs and wear make up. I believe Islam says men and women should dress modestly. I've never seen a man in one of those.

It's prayer abaya isn't it - so you slip it on over your other clothes if you want to go to Mosque and pray.

Do you also have issues with mantillas and Jewish prayer shawls as well OP?

You wouldn’t find a Jewish prayer shawl in John Lewis! That made me laugh.

I’m not remotely depressed. I like women being able to buy their clothes of choice from JL.
