AIBU to question the media response to the Belfast attack?

1000 replies

Squirrel001 · 09/06/2026 08:55

Why are the media being silent on the Belfast attack?

Is the open borders narrative that important to them that they feel the need to ignore one of the most horrific attacks ever seen on a UK street?

I despair for the future of the UK. It’s grim.

No, your claim was not comparing one country to another, your claim was between catholics and Protestants.

I actually don’t think it is, I was thinking about it last night and actually I think I mean more of a general north versus south thing. Because the accent then gives it away (but obviously the accent isn’t religion dependent).

I can tell you’re very offended so I’ll stop there, what I thought was just an interesting chat about ancestry and culture is now turning into something else entirely.

So what if one poster thinks this? Disagree fine there's no need for all the uppityness. It isn't as if they said catholics are ugly and protestants aren't. It was an observation that you disagree with!

Jesus it's easy to see why sectarianism is alive and well isn't it with these volatile reactions.

I didn’t say 80%. I said when I look at someone and think ‘oh I think they’re Irish’, 80% of the time the accent confirms it. I don’t get it with every Irish person, not even close. I wouldn’t say this is ‘outrageous’, lots of people can spot common features among people whose ancestry is from one particular area, whether that’s Ireland or elsewhere?

You didn’t once mention “Irish”, the ROI didn’t come into it, you can go back and read your own posts. The question was how can anyone tell whether someone is a catholic, due to someone being labelled as a catholic in Belfast, and your answer was “Interesting! I’ve always felt I could tell the difference physically although I’ll wait to be asked for the reason why before giving it.”

Sectarianism is fulled by people claiming you can physically tell the different between catholic and Protestants, calling that shit out if quite literally the opposite of sectarianism.

Let’s just stop now. Honestly what I thought was just a general chat is now (predictably) being microscoped in an attempt to twist it into something it isn’t. I won’t bother trying to engage in friendly chat again - we’re repeatedly told on here to ‘educate ourselves’ more about Irish matters but tbh this is why people don’t; because there’s always somebody who kills the goodwill, and makes saying anything feel awkward.

Back to riots in the UK!

Hopefully the rain will put paid to any more riots this evening.

😮‍💨 why do we bother, eh! I find the ‘English’ threads on here quite funny. One of the last ones was ‘why do English people cheat so much?’ 😂😂

It is fuelled by folk getting so very wound up over fuck all. As demonstrated.
The pp was making an observation, they weren't attacking or being offensive.

More houses have been set on fire, it looks like it’s all starting up again.

Wonder if the plods have actually arrested anyone or have we still just got the 3 because they have to 'tread carefully' apparently.
They need to send Southhampton cops in. Arrest someone for throwing a traffic cone <just not for stabbing someone>.

If you think claiming there are physical differences between catholics and Protestants isn’t sectarian you’re being wilfully ignorant.

Ridiculous sweeping comments like that are damaging, the claim that it was “friendly chat” when it is downright whipping up division is ridiculous.

But it’s just idle chat apparently. A bit like misogyny being a bit of banter.

Gloriia · Yesterday 08:53

Anyway.

Let hope they focus on the actual problem and review checks/cta whatever to stop another atrocity.

I'd be interested to hear from the attacker's friends/neighbours. Did he show signs of aggression or violence and no-one did anything? It would seem extraordinary to go from model, integrated citizen to eye gouger. There must have been warning signs surely or were the plods 'treading carefully' as is their m.o apparently in that area?

The poster I was replying to was!!

”I’ve always felt I could tell the difference physically”

Not cultural signifiers, physical signifiers between catholics and Protestants.

Edited

Oops sorry my mistake.
I missed that part. I apologise.
Have you taking it out of context?? I re-read the post.

You specifically asked me (or another Irish poster did). I said I didn’t know if it was something anyone actually wanted to hear or was interested in, they did 🤷‍♀️

The poster made an observation that others didn't agree with. It wasn't done with malice or sarcasm <unlike some>. 'A bit like misogyny'. Fgs.

Just disagree!

If you can't debate with me hun just ignore, this kind of childish post isn't very nice is it? I don't agree with many of the posts but wouldn't suggest anyone be called a silly name.

When you are going to claim someone is fuelling sectarianism because they are pointing out sectarianism you are being wilfully ignorant. It’s not a silly name, it’s the reality of your stance.

There is no debate to be had with racists and the anti-irish

FYI "Hun" is also a sectarian slur here so I probably wouldnt use it to address somebody from NI. Surprised you didnt know this with your superior knowledge of all thing NI.

The poster is not entirely wrong. There is a thing “The fenian head” or the “Irish head” known as a slightly bigger head than the English, some have huge heads, my own head is fairly hefty for my small body. It may just be a rumoured but “I’ve heard the big Irish head in ye” or those with bigger heads “Potato head”
The "big Irish head" is a popular cultural observation and stereotype. While often used playfully or affectionately to describe unmistakable facial features or a high volume of hair, scientific studies have shown that the Irish population does, in fact, feature slightly larger head circumferences on average compared to some other European baselines.

Fuelling sectarianism? Are you for real? I’m a very dull, nonpolitical 35 year old mum living in a very nondescript part of England. Having what I thought was general internet chat with an Irish poster.

I can see now why ‘English people never engage on the topic of Ireland, they know nothing about us, why not?’ - because it’s absolutely bloody exhausting. I won’t be making this mistake again. Thankfully the Irish people in my life are nothing like this so will have to conclude it’s an internet thing.

Anyway, that’s the final post from me on this absolute nonsense. Let’s not derail.

We need an eye roll emoji. Outside of the 6 counties, hun is a term of affection that I have used to my west Belfast friends. They know that I’m a Dub, they call me wee love or our kid, our kid is annoying I’m an adult but I say nothing.

Pointing out sectarianism is exhausting?

People from NI have pointed out that claiming protestant and catholics have physical differences is both offensive and sectarian.

Rather than engaging with trying to find out why that is, you've tried to tell us why we are wrong about our own culture.

'English people never engage on the topic of Ireland, they know nothing about us, why not?’ - because it’s absolutely bloody exhausting.... by bloody exhausting do you mean the Irish wont take my (uneducated) opinion as fact in spite of their own lived experiences?

I'm not racist nor anti irish

This thread is astounding. We've had 'loyalist' said more times than atrocity, 'border' and I think cta mentioned fleetingly by me.

The priorities of some are very clear.
