Why is it, people can see you are reversing, the car is in motion, the reversing lights are on, yet they still walk right behind me so I have to jam my breaks on. Then they give ME a dirty look as if its my fault!!!
GOD GIVE ME STRENGTH! [ANGRY]

because they are much more important than you - don't you realise the whole world revolves around them? You should have known what they were going to to do and reacted accordingly

WigWamBam · 23/06/2008 19:05

I get fed up with drivers who reverse off their drives, across pavements, without bothering to look to see if there are pedestrians coming along the pavement. It's a footpath, it's my right of way.

myredcardigan · 23/06/2008 19:11

This drives me crazy too.
Also when I drive slightly forward of a parking space in order to reverse into it and the numpty behind me drives right up to me as if it's an unlikely thing to do in a car park. I go beyond it at an angle too so it should be obvious what I'm about to do.

People are too often just in their own little world when they drive. Very dangerous IMO.

Kimi · 23/06/2008 19:11

I love the ones who don't know what there indrecaters are for

myredcardigan · 23/06/2008 19:14

WWB, the flip side of that is that every day I pull into a side street to take DS to school and 7 times out of 10 people just step off the pavement into the road without looking to their right to check if a car is turning. I'm very aware of it but wonder how long before there's an accident there.

Goober · 23/06/2008 19:14

Thing I found was one day I told somebody just that and they argued that they hate it when they are walking and people reverse towards them.
Who's right?

southeastastra · 23/06/2008 19:15

open the window and make beeping noises as you reverse

This was in the supermarket carpark.
Then as you are trying to squeeze out of the parking space and avoid the PRAT who has just walked behind your car as you are reversing, you then start to pull forward to find another PRAT walking infront of the car! Why can't people just wait while you pull out?

Depends on the situation really, Goober.

If you walk behind someone who is already starting to reverse, you're a dickhead.

If you start to reverse without checking whether pedestrians are approaching, you are equally a dickhead.

Common courtesy to let people pass, surely? You'd wait if it was a car passing; why not a pedestrian? But many drivers only look for cars, they don't bother looking for pedestrians.

There's no accounting for wankeriness, MRC ...

RR, Firstly, I'm sure there's no such thing as priority in a car park as it's not a public highway.
Secondly, I will pull forward and stop. It they want to pull around me, fine. But if they just continue to pull up behind me then neither of us can go anywhere.

I have to say though Tas, I do think you're being a wee bit unreasonable to expect nobody infront or behind. If I saw someone reversing I would make a point of walking in front of their car so as not to make their reversing difficult.

Shoshe · 23/06/2008 19:24

SEA my car has a beep beep noise and they still do it!!! And as it is a Bongo, (think transit van shape) it is really hard to see them!

myredcardigan · 23/06/2008 19:25

WWB, just to add, I do know that pedestrians have a right to cross I just wish, for their own safety, they would look. I always cross and teach DCs to cross slightly further in rather than smack on the turning IYKWIM.

Sexonlegs · 23/06/2008 19:33

Tas, totally understand. Drives me (excuse the pun ) absolutely bonkers!

whatsoccuring · 23/06/2008 19:36

Yanbu

WigWamBam · 23/06/2008 19:37

I don't disagree, MRC. Hence my comment about wankerishness!

There are idiots everywhere; some of them drive cars, some are pedestrians. A little bit of common sense goes a long way on both counts, as does a little bit of consideration.

getmeouttahere · 23/06/2008 20:03

I have to turn right at a busy junction to get to work.

The visibility of other traffic is poor at the best of times.

Every fecking day there is a couple of old dears STOOD ON THE EDGE OF THE FOOTPATH BLOCKING MY VIEW, YAKKING ABOUT FECK ALL.

GRRRRRR

That bugs me.

Ripeberry · 23/06/2008 20:06

This is why i always reverse INTO a space so i can make a quick getaway.
Also its better for the engine as you do all the manouvering when the engine is warm and there is less faffing around when you start a cold car.
Sorry but pedestrians and other cars DO have priority over a reversing vehicle.
If you had an accident it would be the reversing car's fault.

unfitmother · 23/06/2008 20:07

YABU

Annoying though they are, pedestrians have right of way.

myredcardigan · 23/06/2008 21:10

Ripeberry, I was talking about reversing into a space. I never understand why anyone would drive forward into a parking space. So, so much easier to reverse than drive in forward. Plus the ease of getting out, as you say.
I was talking about when the car behind assumes, as I've gone past the space, I don't want it and continues to drive too close. Then we're stuck!

Whilst pedestrians have right of way, a little consideration for their own safety would be appreciated. No point in being 'right' if you're dead! Even on a zebra crossing, I would wait until the cars have stopped rather than just assume that because they should, they will.

myredcardigan · 23/06/2008 21:11

Please excuse my grammar this evening.

beaniesteve · 23/06/2008 21:13

As a motorist you have as much responsibililty to be aware of other road users as pedestrians do. Do them a favour by doing what you should be doing, which is looking in your mirrors, looking behind you and being prepared to stop if someone walks out behind you!

Tas1 · 26/06/2008 16:33

The person in question was at least 15 cars away as I started to reverse out of my space. I checked all around me and kept on looking as I reversed. I was halfway out of the space before the lady was up to my car, but even though she had been watching me reverse from a distance she still continued to just walk behind the car and then gave ME a dirty look when I had to slam on the brakes.
