AIBU to be surprised my neighbour objected to us entering their garden?

Next door neighbour, and I share general chit chat and relevant tx messages about the neighbourhood, I often roll their bins in if they are blocling their driveway so they dont have the hassle and can just park up when they get home.

They were out for the day, we were due to be travelling at 10am for the weekend. Our naughty cat got out just before we were leaving and ran into their fully open garden, there is no fence or gate at the side of the house.

Hubby goes down the side of their house with a bag of dreamies, sits on the patio to try and coax cat back in (unsuccesfully)

Couple of hours later I get a message asking why he was there, I explained what had happened and apologised, the response was do not go in our garden when we are not there without asking first.

I didnt respond. If im honest it took me by surprise, our garden is open the same as theirs and I wouldnt have an issue at all, if anything it was funny. Thoughts please!

I wouldn't like neighbours in my garden without asking. BUT if retrieving your cat, I would be ok once you've explained.

TheLoneliestSnail · Yesterday 21:11

How long was he there?

James76 · Yesterday 21:11

He sat on their patio for how long? It will have looked very odd to the neighbours.

Hi,

I'm the hubby! 😀

I was sat there for 15 mins trying to coax the cat closer to me so I could grab him.

I felt really awkward but we were going away for the weekend and had hotels, restaurants etc booked and had chased him around for over an hour before he ran into next doors garden. We were running really late as a result and didn't really see it as an issue.

I looked at it like when your kid kicks a ball over the fence into next doors garden. Surely it's not an issue to pop over and pick it up?

They're probably in their 30's.

Regards

It is an issue to go get a ball without asking!

This. Awkward. I think you're unreasonable.

Assuming they had cameras and saw him just randomly sat on their furniture as if hes contemplating life. It would freak me out too.

Didn't you think to ring them and ask first considering you have their number?

I'm hubby.

I wasn't on their furniture. I was led on the floor on my belly, stretched out with a little bag of cat Dreamies (treats), trying to coax him closer to me.

I'm 50 years old, not some thug. I thought it was odd they would object.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 21:16

As you have her contact details, why didn't you just call first?

but as an animal lover, I'd have understood once explained.

Nobody where I live allows their kids to go into anyone else’s garden to get a ball that’s gone over. You go and knock on the door and ask for it back.
In the garden you can often see into the back of the house and people are entitled to their privacy.
I think in the circumstances you did what you needed to do without knowing they wouldn’t like it. Fair enough. But they’ve now told you they don’t like it and it’s their property so you need to just accept that.

I didnt think tbh because it didnt seem a big deal and we were in a rush!

Your husband said he was sitting there for 15 minutes. That's not being in a rush. You should have called them.

You were lay on your belly on their lawn! It gets worse 🤣🤣🤣

You may well not be a thug, but you were trespassing without consent. You pushed a boundary. Instead of be offended, take note and dont do it again. Simples!

That’s a slightly weird thing to do in someone else’s garden tbh.

Is this thread the flip-side to the one a couple days ago along the lines of, AIBU to objecting to my neighbour in my garden? 🤔😂

We were nearly 2 hous late leaving to go away and so we were in a rush.

It was a Friday morning and we had booked the day off work to go away for the weekend.

They were at work and so I couldn't knock on the door - as Noone was home.

I just wanted to quick grab the cat, put him in the house and leave. The house sitter was coming over the weekend to feed him.

pteromum · Yesterday 21:21

Well obviously because it’s here, we need a diagram 😜

But am open garden, YANBU.

going forward, probably one that needs a cuppa or chat with them.

Try and work out what the random issue was?

Or, you could move house, change identity and go from there.

Seriously though, it’s fine, they are odd, I’m sure a chat will sort it.

SparkyBlue · Yesterday 21:23

Look now you know what they are like so keep a wide berth from them. They can take their own bins in from now on. It’s not like you climbed over walls or forced open locked gates.

Are you OP? How have you managed to name change. I thought that wasn’t allowed?

edit to add I see you are husband.

Its the "hubby" talking now. Never known threads to be a family affair but there we go!

Ps. The word "hubby" makes me gag

BringBackCatsEyes · Yesterday 21:28

I think it was reasonable to get your cat from their garden under the circumstances (you being away for the w/e), and it would be a bit mean for the neighbours to have issue with that.
But sitting on their patio...that's overstepping.
I would have contacted them very soon after getting the cat to explain why you were in their garden.

Eenameenadeeka · Yesterday 21:28

I think it's the sitting on the patio that makes it really odd to them. If you quickly grab the cat or a ball or whatever and leave it's clear that's what you're doing, but from their perspective if they check a camera or hear from someone else that you were sat in their garden for 15 minutes, it does sound very unusual and I see why they said something.

WillieBanjo · Yesterday 21:29

I had a feeling that they might be younger.

Unfortunately be prepared for the 6ft composite fence it seems all the rage for the younger ones around me .

lemmein · Yesterday 21:31

Your neighbour is weird! I’d rather everyone collected their feckin cats rather than them being left to shit in my garden.

I thought this ?!??

Branleuse · Yesterday 21:33

I'd reply 'oh OK, I wouldn't usually, but we needed to get the cat back before we went away and thought we were on good terms and it would be OK in the circumstances. Noted for the future!

Then just don't do anything else to help them

Lying on their patio.

andnowwhatdowedo · Yesterday 21:38

You should have tried to phone, it would only take a minute, and left a message if no answer. I did the other day when my cat was in the neighbours garden.
