Have you ever come across some money you’d completely forgotten about or neglected? I actually found an account last year which I thought I had closed - it had £35k in it!!

A forgotten pension I had in my 20s…it now has £30k in it!
I cried when I found out.
(from happiness)

Yeah years ago I lost 3k in cash in my house
I ripped the house apart screwed over it for ages

I thought it might have been my son’s friends as they were often in and out of my house as teens. But I never said anything

few years later Im was moving a standing corner unit and the drawer fell out and behind the drawer was the money 😂

Ive also got money from a bank account that I had forgot about had about 2k in it

I’ve also found vouchers like Christmas ones for 100 -50 that I meant to use and didn’t

Dweetfidilove · 05/06/2026 19:40

When I grow up, I wanna be un a position to not miss £35k 💭

DilemmaDelilah · 05/06/2026 19:52

We forgot about a load of Euros we had stashed away to take on holiday several years ago, but then covid hit and we haven't been to Europe since. We cashed them in and got about £230, which was nice.

TigerRag · 05/06/2026 19:54

£50 in a coat pocket

Thirteenblackcats · 05/06/2026 19:54

🙄

Mountainsandhuts · 05/06/2026 19:59

I moved out of a rental property and the EA contacted me to say the cleaner found 250£ in a drawer.

I find the concept of money becoming worthless really terrifying. Genuinely thought that was made up, when a friend in England mentioned getting near the deadline to change money.

In Ireland all money from 1928 onwards can be exchanged for euros. Obviously inflation will have stripped it of most of its value but it’s comforting when you have a terrible memory and a talent for missing deadlines.

DustyMaiden · 05/06/2026 20:00

I’m not that dizzy.

Squirrelchops1 · 05/06/2026 20:02

Yes £5000. I only checked as got a free payout from Nationwide but couldn't find any statements etc. It was money put aside for house renovations and I'd obviously just really mentally put it aside!

Anonyhouse · 05/06/2026 20:04

I put money in a Monzo savings pot for our holiday and forgot it existed until months after the holiday. It was £200. I’d been really skint in the month prior to spotting it, so was both chuffed and annoyed that I’d not spotted it sooner!

When my gran died we found envelopes with cash in all over the house in some very strange places. I don't think she trusted banks

We did exactly the same after both my grandparents passed.
There was cash in every drawer in the house, mainly their weekly pension that they barely touched

YesAndThenAgainNo · 05/06/2026 20:05

I’ve done similarly to you OP and came across an investment fund that I’d thought I’d transferred out. It had had a significant stock portfolio in it and had sat there for twenty years.

It’s probably enough to fund six or seven years of retirement.

My BiL found about £15k in cash stashed in various places in his parents' house after they died. Most of it was no longer legal tender, so couldn't be exchanged for real money. Heartbreaking as they had lots of bills to pay.

Did you try exchanging it at the bank? I thought it was exchangeable pretty much forever even if its a bit of a faf - I think its sent off to the Bank of England, presuming you are UK based. The BOE doesn’t set a time limit on exchanging withdrawn bank notes?

MrsAvocet · 05/06/2026 20:08

Nothing that exciting but I did find once a purse with about €300 in it in a suitcase that I hadn't opened since our last holiday in Europe. That was quite a nice boost for the trip we were about to go on.

I think he did ask the bank and they said it couldn't be exchanged.

I found a fiver in my dungarees the other week - it made my day! £35k+ is wild - how did you forget that?!!

Long story short, I’d moved banks a few times over the years and was convinced the account had been emptied and closed. It was quite a shock when I discovered it hadn’t.

Oh dear - I’ve just double checked with ChatGPT and it says notes can be exchanged indefinitely but not coins…hope he didn’t chuck it on a bonfire!

A pension from a job 20 odd years ago. Signed all the paperwork, moved on after less than a year. Moved house yet again recently and thought I ought to change my details if I could even find something to start with …they were very thorough before they would accept my change of address…£28k sat there. Had to double take. Karma from awful job I guess.

LakieLady · 05/06/2026 20:28

I've found the odd £30 or £40 in a jacket or trouser pocket a few times, but never anything like £35k!

I always keep £100 or so in cash stashed in the house for emergencies, but I haven't forgotten about it and I know exactly where it is. I've done it ever since one of the banks' whole IT system was fucked for a day or two some years ago.

None of their customers could get cash or use their debit cards, which made things really challenging. I make sure I have enough cash for a tank of petrol and a few days shopping in case it ever happens again.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/06/2026 20:30

Well my ex boyfriend had holes in his trousers and pound coins just used to fall down the back of the sofa, a lot. One day though my hand came up not with pound coins but with a mouse skeleton which one of the cats must’ve dropped and forgotten about. My screams were legendary!

That's a crazy amount of money just to forget about.

Chlorpool · 05/06/2026 20:37

I found a bank account with 2k in about 12 years ago, totally forgot about it.

Yes it can, this happened in our family and just had to have a meeting with the bank to organise how it was done!

About 10 years ago I had some sort of saving app where when I did certain things (like Facebook posts) it would transfer money from my bank account to a savings account and round things up. I forgot about it and wasn’t very detailed in reviewing debits from my account, and they looked like other debits I had like storage or apps. Then, a few years after signing up (and forgetting about it), I was notified that the app was closing (or I think it was foreign and unavailable in the UK?) so ended up accidentally saving about £1300.
