Six weeks into a new job and I’ve got a family emergency

Like there’s no question whatsoever that I have to take tomorrow off I’m just not quite sure how to handle it
I’m sure they would just give me the day off, but I feel as though I should offer to take it as holiday
I know about it already
They don’t need to cover for me
My boss has had a long challenging day today
And has gone out with his wife
He Will read and pick up the text if I send it now
But because I want to take it as holiday I kind of feel I should send it sooner rather than later
And if I was calling in sick, I would have to Phone before eight, but I’m not sick
When to text ?

You tell your boss you have an emergency and won't be on tomorrow.
Discuss how it is lodged when you go back.

When would you do it tonight or tomorrow?

Now.

If no cover has to be arranged for you I’d do it in the morning.

best wishes OP hope you have support to be able to manage this emergency

Text now and say you have an emergency, you won’t be in tomorrow. You are happy to take it as unpaid leave or holiday, which ever they would prefer.

Macaroni46 · 04/06/2026 20:33

Don’t do it now. You’ll spoil his evening. Do it first thing in the morning and offer to take it as unpaid or annual leave or that you’ll make up the time.

TurtleGroove · 04/06/2026 20:34

If I managed you I would be happy for you to message me in the morning - I actively don’t give my team my personal number as I don’t want to be contacted by them out of hours and spend my night worrying about work.

I would class the leave on what the emergency is regardless of how long you’d been there - I’ve agreed bereavement leave 2 weeks in for a new starter.

part of being a boss is having things like this happen.
Just text that you won't be in tomorrow, and that you can explain Monday.

Hope whatever it is goes as well as can be expected

Axlcat · 04/06/2026 20:46

I’d advise messaging in the morning. Unlikely they’ll do anything about it this evening so pointless sharing it now and encroaching on their evening. Hope you are ok - I work in HR and these things happen. It won’t reflect badly, just offer to take as annual / unpaid
